can he come off the bench when a team is struggling to run the offense/score and put up points? sure, but I don't see much more in the making.

You play him LOTS early this season, let him put up the big scoring #s, and then make a deal when his value soars.

I disagree. I don't think he will ever be a superstar but he has shown much more awareness this season. I don't think he has forced his shot, he has got to the line, looked for his teammates, and even played some D. Pair him next to a healthy Gilbert Arenas and he could become pretty dynamic.

I wouldn't trade him right now. Not now because he's trying to play defense and pass the ball. He's making a case to become a starter later on this season. I'd like to see him and Gilbert playing some games together before considering any type of deals.

I don't think I'd trade him for a guy in the twilight of his career like Vince Carter. And we wouldn't be able to trade him for a young high-quality SG like Kevin Martin or Brandon Roy.

Well, that presumes that we'd only be willing to trade NY for another SG. In that scenario, you're right; but trading position for position is usually difficult. I don't see ATL parting with JJ for NY plus the Wizards' RealGM pu pu platter, either.

However, I *would* consider trading NY for a young, physical big. NY + change for Maxiell and another rotation player, for example. Sure, NY projects to be a better fit as a starter than Maxiell (since he's undersized), but Maxiell would bring sorely-needed toughness and energy from our bench. EG likes multi-dimensional bigs, but "multi-dimensional" is another word for "soft" in my book.

I'm not sure if Maxiell is worth NY (I'd *consider* the trade, but it's not a no-brainer), but man, we really need a Maxiell/Powe-type coming off the bench in the worst way.

First of all, Young is arguably better than Deshawn right now and will certainly be better in the upcoming years. So merely by keeping him, we upgrade our starting lineup. That's the worst case scenario: merely by keeping Young, we upgrade our weakest starting position in the very near future.

Secondly, nobody is going to trade us a center better than Haywood, or a SF better than Butler, or a PG better than Arenas; so we can rule those positions out. We are not upgrading at starting PG, SF or C. In any Nick Young trade, our options are to either improve at starting SG, improve at starting PF, or improve the bench.

So the question is, can we utilize Young in a trade that helps us more than by merely keeping him and upgrading our weakest position?

I don't think improving our depth by adding a guy like Maxiell or any other backup big man (who would take the spot of Blatche or DSong) is all that much of an improvement. It certainly doesn't trump the upgrade at SG by keeping Young (which effectively bolsters are SG depth as well by moving Stevenson to the 2nd unit).

Using Young to upgrade the SG spot is admittedly difficult since teams rarely trade position for position. The only reason to do it is to get younger or older, to address salary concerns, or possibly to swap a scorer type for a do everything role player type. I think Joe Johnson, Vince Carter or Rip Hamilton are the only real possibilities because the other team might do it for age or contract issues. Among those 3, the only guy that I really would consider is Joe Johnson. He's a versatile role-player type who would fit well alongside Arenas. And he's still reasonably young.

The only other possibility would be to package Young with Jamison for an upgrade at PF. That's a lot of talent to give away and I don't know what teams out there are willing to trade away a PF significantly better than Jamison. Maybe Boozer? Even if Utah would do it, I think I'd rather have Jamison and Young.

Depending on how the Hawks do this year, a summertime trade of Etan, Daniels and Young could make sense.

That same package could potentially net Kirilenko as well, though Young doesnt seem like a Jerry Sloan type of player.

I like the idea of going after Kirilenko, but I would replace Young with Blatche. With Kirilenko playing PF,therefore moving Jamison to the bench, and with the emergence of Mcgee, and Haywood already a good player, we would not have room for Blatche. However, with Young here, we would have a dynamic lineup, with our perimeter doing a lot of scoring. It would work because Kirilenko is a great distributor, as well as Caron.

I would also do the Etan+Daniels+Young for Joe Johnson, but I think Nick Young is only going to get better this year and make that trade a lot harder to make.

I'm a huge Maxiell fan, so I trade Nick for him twice. He'd actually be the best center on our roster - even though he's a PF. I'd even take Maxiell over CCJ's boy - Millsap. Maybe add Pech and Afflalo (sp?) to the trade to even out rosters. We're not winning anything this year, so I don't care that we don't have much at the 2 on the roster, as long as we get one before next season - and that's the easiest spot on the roster to fill.

Maxiell will always be a backup, not a legit starter. Hes a good rebounder, but he doesnt offer much that makes you think he can make a huge impact on turning a team around. I guess I just like Nick Young more than you, and vice versa with Maxiell. I really think Nick is going to only get better with his all around game (he had some nice passes last night, along with solid defense and hustle) and his shot selection. Like you said, were not going to win this year, so whats the big deal if he is the best center on our roster He is not better than Haywood, and I am very confident Mcgee will be better than him sooner rather than later.

I seriously disagree with those who don't think N1 is going to be a star.
We lucked out on him. A number of teams are going to be kicking themselves
for passing on him. He's a natural hi-efficiency scorer who can score all over
the court. Seeing how much the other aspects of his game have improved
makes me all the more sure of the brightness of his future.

a backcourt of him and Gil is going to be just sick, even if it isn't very good
at all defensively.
