Has Angelo silenced his critics?
On Angelo's inability to draft offense:
8 games in Matt Forte is 6th in the NFL in yards from scrimmage as a rookie. Greg Olsen is currently 3rd in the NFC amongst TE in receptions (9th overall) in only his second year (up from 20th overall last year). Kyle Orton has the 10th highest QB rating in the league (7th in the NFC) with a rating (90.8) that would have ranked #5 overall in the NFL last year.
These 3 could be the core of the offense for the next 5 or more years and all three are playing at a near pro bowl level in only their 1st or 2nd season as full time starters. I think the critics have to be silent.

I think it'll hinge on how Chris Williams does.
If he doesn't bust and turns out to be a good pick, we might be in business...
Now if we had somehow traded up for Ryan Clady who's turning really well for Denver right now...
ahh...hindsight.

Wolfe has been outstanding in special team coverage.
Danieal Manning is a freak athletically but just not very smart. I'm really disappointed with him because I thought at the time it was a great pick.

Tank Johnson was a solid pick. Dan Friggin' Bazuin had short arms but it was the knee injury that did him in. Roosevelt Williams and Terrence Metcalf were 3rd round picks and were under the Dick J. era when Dick had control of the roster. JA got control in 2003. But if you wanna go there go aaall the way there:
Kyle Orton
Matt Forte
Greg Olsen
Alex Brown
Lance Briggs
Charles Tillman
Nathan Vasher
Bernard Berrian
Tommie Harris
Chris Harris
Devin Hester
Kevin Payne
6 drafts as GM and how many pro-bowlers have or will eventually come from this group?
and Mark Bradley I hear has 10 catches on the Chiefs and is just "Blowin Up"

Re: Has Angelo silenced his critics?
Great thread topic
I actually came onto the board to make a props thread for Angelo and Lovie
We do have elite type guys to build around on offense
Not taking a QB in the draft
Forte, Forte, Forte.........drafting/starting him
Our WR core is nice..........wouldnt mind adding Ocho or another elite receiver in Fagency
The o-line is solid
all pleasant surprises
Solid management--------injuries absolutely killed us last year
We've always had elite guys to build around on defense
We have to fix the pass coverage/rush
Upgrade the 0-line and we will be good and contend for a long time
JA/Lovie have made plenty of unpopular decisions that have proven right
We are a top team;
what else could we want from these guys

Yeah, THAT'S what we wanted out of our third round pick, a good special teams guy. You can get these guys in the 7th and a lot cheaper. Wolfe is lucky he made the team this year.

Re: Has Angelo silenced his critics?
Everyone criticizes the both Angelo and Lovie Smith, but since Smith took over the team went:
5-11 (first building year)
11-5 (bye week playoff team)
13-3 (superbowl)
7-9 (lose 2 defensive starters for the season in game 1, several other key member miss major chunks of time)
5-3 (so far this year)
Then, people say that they can't coach and the roster has no talent? So what is going on then? A bunch of talentless guys with a horrible coach are, in general, playing really well? How?
1) Is Angelo stacking this team with so much talent that even a moron can coach it to victory?
2) Is Smith such a god of coaching that even with absolute crap he can lead them to very successful seasons?
3) Are both Angelo and Smith doing an above average job and fans just micro analyze small things instead of looking at the big picture?
I'd say #3 is probably the most likely.

Isn't that why this board exists?

Here's the big picture: I'm having a hard time counting the titles Angelo has brought me in his 7+ years here.
I'm thankful for the improvement. Angelo got us from 'A' to 'B' and we even had a flukey (I said it) SuperBowl appearance in his tenure. Until we get to 'C', though, I'm going to peck away. And if Orton hadn't come out of nowhere this season, you'd be right there with me. Fess up !

WHAT is this all about ?!? First, you're hijacking in an Angelo thread. Second, what is the significance of Gray starting Tuesday? The sig bet is that Gray is the Bulls regular starting center by 12/31. Key word: REGULAR. Spot starts in early November are not my concern! We're going need some mediation in here if you're going to take that tact with me, mister! I'm not giving up my sig that easily !!

You scare me when you cackle like that.
You hooked up with Ben with the same wager and he's conceded based on 3 Gray spot starts ? I find this hard to believe !
EDIT: Jesus, you changed your avatar to the Grim Reaper, too? May as well enjoy you're avatar-changing privledges while you can. I'm going to gay it up before you know it.

That's really underrating the difficulty and luck involved in the job. How many GMs even have a superbowl appearance in the past 7 years? Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Angelo only had roster control for 4-5 of those years as well?
Shoot for the moon for your aspirations, but realistically you have to ask yourself is the replacement going to do better, and the job Lovie/JA have done so far would make me think no. The replacements probably wouldn't do better.
I feel a little more strongly about that with Lovie than with Angelo, as I do think the Bears have consistently won more games than their talent should allow.

Angelo has been responsible for the Bears' drafts from the '02 crop (Columbo) forward so he's been in charge of 7 drafts. I like the middle to late round finds Angelo comes up with but for every Nathan Vasher I can point to an early round mistake like Michael Haynes. I also get the distinct impression JA makes the cardinal sin of falling in love with players and taking them before they're slotted (see Bazuin, Dan and Wolfe, Garrett). The smart GMs gamble a little and trade down in these cases and have the same player they could've pulled the trigger on 10 picks previously fall right into their laps.
And I just couldn't let my buddy emperor's original post go without some quality back and forth.
