All-time Defensive tackle Discussion

Post#1 » by NO-KG-AI » Mon May 7, 2007 1:09 am

Please read the general project page and post any related questions there. The current plan will be to let the discussion go 2 weeks with voting being open the last 4 days of that period. This may change however seeing as how this is a brand new board and it may take some time before awareness is where Doc would like it.

The all-time ranking list will be 15 players long.

Some key names everyone should consider along with accolades. Please don't feel limited by this list, but do utilize unless you are already aware of this information.

I know their were better guys at eating space, and taking double teams, but was any DT as disruptive, and as good a penetrator as Sapp? I find it hard to believe, the guy was a monster.

Even though I thoroughly dislike the man, Joe Klecko's name warrants mentioning here.

A few other players to take into consideration:

La'Roi Glover (6 Pro Bowls, 71.5 career sacks, including league-leading 17.0 in 2000)

Jerry Ball (4 Pro Bowls, 32.5 career sacks, notable run-stuffer)

Alex Karras (Incredibly underrated, All-Decade team 1960s, considered by many to be HoF-worthy*, played George Papadopolis on Webster and Mongo in Blazing Saddles )

Cortez Kennedy (8 Pro Bowls, 58 career sacks, All-Decade team 1990s, considered one of the best of his generation)

Ernie Ladd (4 All Star/Pro Bowls in 8 seasons)

Eric Swann (considered somewhat of a disappointment, still he appeared in 2 Pro Bowls and racked up 48 career sacks)

Bryant Young (anchor of dominating Niners

I think TSN actually got the top 3 right on with Lilly, Mean Joe Greene, and Merlin Olsen.

Randy White and Warren Sapp would be next on my list. I always found Page and Hampton to be overrated and beneficiaries of playing under defensive masterminds with great talent around them. I think Alex Karras was every bit as good as either of those guys but the NFL folks always kick him for his gambling suspension.

Cortez Kennedy, Jerry Ball, and Pat Williams are all the same basic player to me, though Kennedy was a better athlete and an impact player for a longer time.

And where is the love for my man Michael Dean Perry!?! 6 Pro Bowls that he played in and he missed 3 others due to injury. That's 9 Pro Bowls in a 10-year career, plus 5 All Pro teams and 1 DPOY. He's the guy the Texans are praying Mario Williams becomes, an oversized DE with enough power to move inside but enough speed to destroy guards and split double teams and make plays in the backfield.
