A Conversation with Mike Taylor

Post#1 » by mkwest » Tue Nov 11, 2008 2:30 am

Going back to the Summer of 2007: How did you regroup after you left Iowa State? How did you get from Ames, Iowa to Boise, Idaho and arrive at your decision to go to the D-League?
For about two months after ISU, I didn't touch a basketball. But I had to make a decision: If I wanted to stay in Division One, I'd have to sit out a year. I could go to a D-2 program and play right away. So I went on a couple of D-2 visits, but I didn't see myself getting better as a player in D-2I talked to Curtis Weathers, my AAU coach in Milwaukee. He sent me out to Sacramento to work out with Gus Armstead. I spent about one or two months out there. That's when I met the assistant coach for Idaho. Once the D-League came calling&I'd rather be there than a low-level D-2 program. So I set my mind on the D-League.

After you got done with the D-League season last summer, what was the process like?
It was a grind. I worked out for 14 teams. Two-hour workouts. Every day -- new city, new hotel, lots of fast food. But I was chasing my dream.

Tell me about Draft Day. Did you expect to have your name called? Were you glued to the tube?
My agent told me that I was projected late first round/early second round. I watched the draft with my family back home in Milwaukee. I stopped watching at, like, #45. I went into my room, and my phone was dead. But I left my agent my sister's number. So a little later, my sister comes running into my room with her phone. And my agent said, "I'm not sure when you're going to go, but the Clippers are going to make a trade for you. It was ironic, because I thought I was a higher pick, but that's been the story of my life. Getting picked so low made me feel that I gotta prove myself. So I was satisfied.

What part of your game do you want to work on the most this season?
Court vision. I want to continue to learn how to be an NBA point guard. It's a learning process every day.

I love it when guys like Taylor make it to the big stage through hard work. It's not like a LeBron who pretty much had everything set for him up until he entered the NBA. Good stuff.

Taylor has definitely impressed me. I wasn't a big fan of his play during summer league, but he's certainly kicked it up a notch. I'm glad that he wants to work hard and his his skills. All 3 of our draft picks thought they would have gone higher, so I hope that is motivation to them all. Taylor and Jordan have been criticized for their character issues or attitude/work ethic in the past, but so far they both seem to have a good head on their shoulders. Taylor really has no reason to do what he did in the past and Jordan has some good mentors to keep him in line and prep him as he begins his professional career.

Great post.

I've liked Taylor even while he had some troubles in Summer League I felt his swagger is something the team can build on. I also like how he knows what he needs to work on, I'm not expecting a improvement that we can see until probably late season going into next season. The team is currently trying to get settled and at the moment we don't have enough secure PG 's back-ups that can allow him to take time off to work on his game with DJ. So as of now MT has to learn on the go.

I like what Taylor brings to the table on O & D. Also, I hope we can move some of these veteran stiffs at the Feb trade deadline.

I've been a big fan of Taylor this season. What's been consistent with him is his defense. We all know that he's a pesky defender and he showed that in summer league. What I've seen him improve on is his offense. He just needs to work on his PG skills, we know that and he knows that. But so far this season he has been impressive.
I've been an LA Clipper fan since 1998 and that will never change. I hate our new logo and jerseys!

We really need Jason hart to step up because as Mike is learning the game he is going to be a risk to have on the floor at times when BD is resting. This is where we needed J-Will to produce as a back-up and give Hart limited mins to maintain the team on offense and defense.

Damn all this season I'm going to be wondering what if J-Will stayed?

Then again we might of cut Taylor if he did and never found out about his potential, so I guess it was worth a price for another solid prospect. Now that we know he is worth the keep it wouldn't hurt to bring in more help.
