Farewell Young Chicken!

Yahoo.com - The Athletics claimed second baseman Yung Chi Chen off waivers from the Mariners on Wednesday, according to a report by Yahoo.com.

I disagree with Dave over at USSM, who believes that Chen was a better prospect than Mike Wilson, who the Mariners just added to their 40-man. Chen, when healthy, was a capable middle infielder with gap power and good plate discipline. The problem is he hasn't been healthy for the past two seasons and, when he was, he couldn't hit at Tacoma. With Luis Valbuena making the leap, Tug Hulett on the roster, and Oswaldo Navarro representing a better defensive option up the middle, there was no room for Chen.

Either way, so long to one of the best nicknames in the organization. Good luck beating the M's next season with the A's, Chen.

25 years old, just had an OPS of 638 in an insanely hitter-friendly park, has a history of shoulder problems... good luck, buddy. You were once a prospect, but are not anymore.

Wilson is also a little old for a prospect and hasn't even been to AAA yet, but you can't just give up on a switch hitter who hit 27 homers and drew 62 walks in only about 400 at-bats. He doesn't have star potential but he could well turn into one of those guys you really like having on your bench and occasionally in the lineup. And if all goes really, really well, he could be an Ibanez type. They did the right thing by putting him on the roster.
