Cubs trade Ceda for Kevin Gregg/Kerry Wood gone

Moronic.

Gregg is alright, but he's now starting to get expensive. He'll make around $10 million for the next couple years and become a free agent. On the other hand, we could've had 5 years of Ceda, who is a really safe bet to be in the majors within the next two seasons.

We gave up our 3rd best prospect for Kevin Gregg.

What kind of prospect is Ceda and is there a real possibility that you guys lose Wood?

He was ranked 3rd in the latest BP rankings, a true closer in the making. Great k rates. I really don't see why Hendry would do this. Gregg only has value because he got saves last season, he's nothing special.

I really doubt we lose Wood, but stranger things have happened.

This trade raises some eyebrows for sure. Gregg isn't that great. Is he a Howry replacement?? This could be paving the way for a bigger trade involving Peavy and Marmol?? I dunno but he is too expensive for how good he is. Doens't make much sense to me.

Sounds like you guys put together a better package for Peavy than previously thought. If you guys get him the rest of the NL might as well just pack it in.

Pitcher Kerry Wood and the Cubs will part ways after 14 years with the organization, general manager Jim Hendry said today.
Wood, who came up in the Cubs organization as one of the team's most heralded prospects ever, had the longest tenure of any Cubs player on the 2008 roster.
Earlier today, the Cubs acquired right-handed reliever Kevin Gregg from Florida on Thursday to plug a hole in the bullpen, sending Double-A prospect Jose Ceda to the Marlins.

Whether Gregg will be a closer, as he was in Florida, or a set-up man depends on if Carlos Marmol is ready to step into a more significant role.

Either way, the Cubs are trying to maintain their options as they head into the free agent season, which officially kicks off on Friday, when teams can makes offers to free agents outside their organization.

Is there any reason why he isn't going to stay a Cub?? Another offer?? Too expensive?? Callin it quits - doubtful??

Well that's a shock.

Clearly Hendry has a limited budget this offseason.

Well this sucks. The best you can get for Ceda is Kevin Gregg? And he's not even a left handed reliever.

Jimbo:
"We’re just in a situation, as Kerry fully understands, that that length of deal, for the kind of salary he’d command right now, is not our first priority. We certainly have to finish our rotation, we have offensive situations to address, and by having the prominence that (Carlos) Marmol now brings to the table, it certainly doesn’t come before the other needs we have. We felt it was time Kerry goes out and does what’s best for him and his family, and gets a huge multi-year deal if possible."

awful trade.

Writing on the wall is that we wont be getting peavy.

Jimbo and McFail have now given the Marlins:

Ricky Nolaco
Renyel Pinto
Jose Ceda
Dontrelle Willis (when he didnt suck).

We have gotten:

Matt Clement
Juan Pierre
and garbage.

and no Heep Sop Choi for Derrek Lee doesnt make this even.

Pathetic.

Basically the only reason I know Ceda will be good is because we traded him to Florida.

The trade doesn't bother me much. How good Ceda becomes remains to be seen. The Cubs are in win now mode and Gregg makes the team better. I think the Cubs realized they wouldn't be able to pony up the type of cash it would take to keep Wood.

I can see why people would be a little upset at thinking the Cubs could get more for Ceda, but don't think Gregg is useless because of it.

As far as the whole Willis trade goes: I think the Cubs were blessed that they traded him. Why? In '03 there's no way he would've been up in Chicago to pitch that season. If he was as productive as he was with the Marlins, the Cubs would have his terrible contract right now instead of Detroit.

I'm pretty disappointed that we won't see Kerry Wood finish his career with the Cubs. After all the years, and all the ups and downs, it seemed fitting for him to play it out in Chicago.

Quite simply, this sucks.

I can't think of another Cub in recent memory that I have rooted for harder than Kerry Wood. He will be missed but he will always be a Cub.

Wood: Leaving Cubs is 'bittersweet'
http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribu ... ng-cu.html
Kerry Wood called his departure from the Cubs "bittersweet" on Friday, but said he'd been preparing for the possibility of leaving through the 2008 season and wasn’t surprised by general manager Jim Hendry’s decision to go in another direction.

"It's bittersweet," Wood said. "Obviously this was my first choice. I wanted to stay here, and it was the best choice for me and my family… (but) it was good to hear it out of his mouth, the honesty. It’s a rarity in the game."

Wood said he’d prefer to stay in the National League, but is open to going anywhere. The New York Mets are looking for a closer, Texas is close to his childhood home, and the Los Angeles Angels may now be in the picture after waving bye to Francisco Rodriguez.

While Wood was understanding about the Cubs' decision, which Hendry said was made in the best interests of Wood and his family, he did say he would've been amenable to staying and "would have done anything" to stay a Cub. The Cubs told him to go get a three- or four-year deal for more money, but Wood said he would've agreed to a one-year deal to stay.

Wood: Well, I know you guys don't want to go long term, but I will stay for one year

Cubs: Thats great, but we will feel bad if you don't go

Wood: But I want to stay...I love the city, the fans, the guys, the organization...I want to stay..give me a reasonable one-year deal and I am here

Cubs: Yeah, but we just traded Ceda for Kevin Gregg, so we can't afford you...

Wood: But I will take a pay cut maybe?

Cubs: Thats fine, but we would feel bad. Tell Koskue good bye, we are paying him and not you remember that
