5/80m offere reported for Pavano Lite? Really?
Really? 5 years and 80 mil for someone who has gone over 200 innings only twice in his career, both coming in years he could walk after the season... this looks like a Pavano/Igawa type contract to me...

Actually he has gone for 200 innings 3 times in the last 7 years. He is a lot closer to Beckett (post season record aside) statistically than Pavano who beyond the injuries really wasn't cut out to be a great pitcher in the AL East. He also has 19 complete games and 9 shutouts and a couple of 200 k seasons.
He was better than his stats this season as TOR offense was crap and bullpen hurt by injuries.
I like his make up but I am nervous about him overall, he has always been just good enough to lose and he has been frail at points. Beyond that I don't know if this will even get it done financially, I bet he is eyeing Zambrano money in this market.

Ugh. It's not a matter of ability as far as Burnett goes (you couldn't say the same thing about Pavano), but the injury concerns are a real problem. A complete repeat of Pavano (meaning Burnett would never even play) is unlikely, but it's even less likely Burnett will stay healthy enough to live up to a deal like this. And to parrot what River Avenue Blues said about this rumor, it makes no sense to blow away Toronto's offer immediately. At least there was some sense to doing it with Sabathia.

How is offering him 5 years and 15 mil blowing away 4 years and 14 mil? Anything less is essentially the same offer which he obviously isn't going to take.
Essentially Cashman is just making market offers I don't know what the shock is. Just because the Brewers throw out a token offer of 100 mil for 5 years did anyone think Sabathia was going to take that? No he is going to get the same kind of money that Santana got so why screw around.
You don't opt out of a 14 mil dollar contract to sign another one you want more and this way the Yanks make sure that Burnett knows there is more.

I saw a four year, 54 million offer from the Blue Jays as their highest bid, that's 13.5 million per. On top of the extra year on the contract, the Yankees would be offering 2.5 million more per year. You don't see where this is significantly more money? Burnett doesn't have any clear hangups about coming to the Yankees and/or leaving Toronto; it doesn't seem sensible to me to try to blow everyone else out of the bidding immediately. Burnett isn't Sabathia.

About the opt out, it's not about getting more per year for Burnett, it's about getting a long-term extension now because he's coming off of a healthy season where he looked pretty good overall. These extra contract years are important, especially for a pitcher like Burnett, who could completely fall apart at any point in his thirties.

I think the approach the Yankees are taking is that instead of being used by every agent and player to drive up the price, they are putting their best deals forward like the pretty girl at the dance. Instead of the empty deadlines that people try and put on things they just go hit on another guy and you can risk them not having room for you once someone takes their offer.
This has more to do with putting pressure on agents, players would be commended for taking less to play somewhere besides NY, agents condemned for letting their client take less.
I like the aggressive approach of putting your number on it and seeing where it goes. Of course if we end up paying Burnett 18 mil a year for 6 years in bidding war then the FO has just lost its mind and I will take that back.
The Yankees have needs they clearly have to fill, this season they can simply play that off, so they have to find a way to create leverage.

I'm kind of up in the air about Burnett, but then I think to myself "how many times do all of us watch Burnett own the Yankees and think to ourselves why don't we have a guy like that?" and then it makes me feel better about the offer. We're the Yankees, are we really going to sit here and nit pick at $2 million a year for a guy with top of the rotation stuff? You can have reservations about Burnett's health, but I see no point in having reservations about the amount of money for year. Lilly and Meche signed for $10 mil a year TWO years ago, and Burnett is a lot better than both of them. Ryan Dempster is about to sign for $13 mil a year. Burnett is getting 15 or 16, face it.

I have more issue with the 5th year than the extra salary, I just don't see the point of throwing out both on a first offer when just one of the two would have put the Yankees ahead of everybody else. If the offers get to the 5/80 range anyway, then fine. But it's a dumb mentality for the Yankees to act like their working in a different world than everybody else. They do have a budget, even if it's the highest budget in the league.

^Agreed. I also don't really think with Burnett's record against the Yanks they need to see him as a 3rd starter in Boston.

5 years, 80 million for Burnett? ROFLMAO.
Please do not do it, Cashman.
Give him 3 years, 48 million.

Well apparently not really, more like 4 for 60 which is also not good enough. At least not on 11/20.
