knick trades today..(2010 draft)

Post#1 » by Matt007b » Fri Nov 21, 2008 8:23 pm

I'm suprised nobody else posted this, usually I do not post new topics but I didn't see this conversation anywhere..

now I could be wrong but I think we have a unprotected first round pick Knick pick (that sounded weird huh?) in 2010 and the number might go to the 1 overall pick that year lol.. anyone else agree? I was worried about that pick watching them beat us earlier in the year and they could make a decent run in the playoffs back east..they hire a good coach finally, benching their star (royal wreck PR wise of a player) sounded like things were on the rise in New York.

But now with these trades they're doing they've gone from bad to a "hope for king james" lottery pick team for the next year or more. Am I the only one thinking this? These looked like salary dumps by New York to me today. Great trades if you're a Jazz fan :D

Matt007

I for one am glad you posted this information and I think it is highly relevant to the Jazz. The Knicks are currently 6-5 and stand 6th in the East. They have lost two games in a row. NYN just traded away their best scorer and starter at shooting guard for yet another small forward. They have a gaping whole at 2 guard. I, like you, think this was a salary cap dump. If the Knicks finish out the year and do not make the playoffs the knicks will be forced to take their pick this year which is great news for the Jazz. The Knicks will aggressively dump salary the next year in order to get way under the cap for 2010. That means two more horrible years for the Knicks and a real chance at a top five draft pick for the Jazz in 2010. WOW!

thanks kwill,

it's crazy now i'm reading on the wire that they're going to trade zach randolph for.. not a whole lot in return in my opinion..and they just activated *marbury*:

"The Knicks are working on a separate deal from their trade with Golden State, which would send Zach Randolph to the Los Angeles Clippers, possibly for Tim Thomas and Cuttino Mobley.

It is believed that Donnie Walsh is ready to make that deal but is awaiting confirmation from the Clippers, who pursued Randolph last summer."

If we retain our core players after this season from bolting, we could get a SERIOUS high draft pick and go deep in the playoffs at the same time in 2010

Welcome Matt. I think we already have killed this one to death months ago, and to a point it deserves some revisiting. Why? Because the Knicks could potentially make the playoffs, and their record could become better. For this year's draft, they have to have 8th best record or higher, which I don't think they will. But they just might by next year, specially with how good they are playing. I don't think anyone here can honestly say that they expected the Knicks to be this good.

I was thinking about posting it, since it's great news for the Jazz. The Knicks just moved Crawford for Harrington (expiring) and are on the way of doing the same thing with Randolph. They're basically trading two of their best players for nothing, which means they'll most likely do worse. It's clear that they're trying to go well under the cap and land one or two big FA in 2010. The great thing about it is that they'll probably be a horrible team for the next 2 years and that means a great pick for the Jazz in 2010.
I honestly don't understand why they're giving up on their season after 11 games, when they're doing better than expected. But **** it. If it's better for us, I have absolutely no problem with it.

...and now that I got that out of the way....

This is great, not just good, but GREAT news for the Jazz. But it comes with a caveat. We don't want the Knicks doing too badly this season. Historically speaking, teams very rarely generate two top 5 draft picks in successive seasons. Even teams that are in the lottery every year generally bounce around, going from 6th to 2nd to 12th to 14th to 22nd to 7th (the Clippers from 03-08) or 13th to 3rd to 7th to 1st to 13th (Blazers from 04-08) or 16th to 8th to 2nd to 9th to 6th (the Knicks themselves from 04-08). As those numbers suggest, often times it is teams that are in the 6-12 range that really end up bottoming out the following year and earning a top 3 draft pick.

This happens for two reasons. First of all, when you DO bottom out, you generally end up getting a very, very good young player that can come in and help you out immediately. In this scenario, it would be devastating if the Knicks were to finish horribly, get lucky in the lottery and end up with Ricky Rubio running the point or DeRozan running on the wings. There is a very large drop off between the top 3-5 picks and picks 6-10 (obviously there are exceptions, and the actual drop off changes with every draft, but generally speaking that is where it occurs). Secondly, its just really, really hard to lose that much. And when it does happen, the organization almost always goes in a new direction that--at least in the short term--ends up producing better results. But a lot of things have to go wrong in the way of injuries, chemistry, egos etc etc to produce a top 5 draft pick generating year. Very few teams are just that bad talent-wise, and I think we can all agree that the Knicks, for all their problems, are not among the least talented teams in the league.

So for our best interests, we want the Knicks to have a difficult season, including a lot of frustration and losing, but with enough positives sprinkled in to keep everyone engaged and hopeful for the future. Then we want Murphy's Law to kick them repeatedly in the scrotum for the entirety of 09-10 :D.

Its time to start exerting our faith.

Not as good, but still very nice. He should return to about what he was doing in 06-07, imo.

It might be a good time to pick up Ricky Davis off of the waiver wire.

I don't know about these trades the Knicks made today. I do know that the pick they owe you in 2010 is golden for that draft or in a potential trade.

Good news for the Jazz. It was starting to look like the Jazz were looking at a mid teens pick this year for me, but now it looks like the Jazz could have a legit top 10 pick next year.

I don't think that Mobley, Thomas, and Harrington aren't slouches. This could easily become a bad thing.

You mean for 2010, next year would be the 2009 draft. ;-)

Still, I think that Crawford was pretty good for the Knicks, and if they get rid of Zach who's been a monster under Mike D'Antoni, there is little chance that they can do anything but miss the playoffs.

Mobley, Thomas and Harrington are all guys who have great talent, put up good stats, and ultimately make your team worse.

Why do you think they can't stick anywhere? It's basically a wash with Randolph, Crawford and Collins, the only difference is the Knicks got worse from a positional POV. They no longer have a legit starting PF, lost a huge amount of points in the paint, and have resorted to being even more of a perimeter oriented team.
