The Amazingly Sucky DeShawn Stevenson thread

Post#1 » by Wizards2Lottery » Sun Nov 23, 2008 3:21 am

4-14 for the game, 2-10 from three point range. 37 minutes

Nick Young: 6-10, 17 points in only 19 minutes

This is the only team that would let this scrub shoot so damn much and not put a stop to it. Why, JUST WHY does he shoot so much. Never has a chucker probably sucked this much.

The guy is a complete **** joke. I can't believe he is an NBA player much less a **** NBA starter.

Watch how the guy dribbles the basketball. He dribbles it an arms length away from himself with an open palm. Seriously, how do you get into the NBA when you look like you're going to turn it over every time the ball is in your hands?

His shot is equally bad. His release takes about 15 minutes. Deshawn's only concern is how badass he looks when he's playing ball. That's it. He doesn't care about production. As long as he thinks he looks sweet doing ****, he'll keep playing the same way. The guy should be benched, but our coaching staff is inept.

I can't believe we let RMJ walk and are stuck with this shot-chucking mongoloid.

There's really no reason for Stevenson to get more than bit minutes before Arenas is back and at 100%. We have more than a season's worth of games that show he is pretty much jank without a star to play off of.

Is there any justifiable reason why he plays more than Nick Young?

D.S. one of hte main reason ernie should be fired, horrible defender that can't block perimeter shots...horrible offense player...how...this guy shoots air ball threes, can't create for his team mates..and his only defense is when he tries to make it look like he keeping a guard from posting up..yet can't block a shot to save his life on the perimeter.
Build your team w/5 shooters using P. Pierce Form deeply bent hips and lower back arch at same time b4 rising into shot. Elbow never pointing to the ground! Good teams have an engine player that shoot volume (2000 full season) at 50 percent.Large Hands

I actually don't think he's bad at all when he plays in his role. When Arenas is getting him easy looks then he's a worth the money he's being paid.

With Arenas out, he looks terrible. Now he's forced to create his own shot off the dribble or take contested fadeaways that have little chance of going in. And EJ has given him the green light, so now he gets to shoot and miss with no consequences.

On-balance, he is THAT bad, and now we have to see Mason getting paid half as-much to be twice the player for Spurs.

Is it too late to bring back DeMarr Johnson???
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

DeShawn is a complimentary player so for him to be struggling right now is nothing any of you should be surprised about. He was brought in to compliment Gilbert Arenas (which he does well) so when Arenas is out of course he'll look bad. He's suppose to bang the open three and give tough defense at the two guard position. Well when Juan Dixon, a hurt Antonio Daniels, or Dee Brown are your options at PG you won't get many open jumpers. Defenses have to stay honest with Gil on the court but when any of the above mentioned players are on the floor they can play straight man making an open shot harder to find.

I don't understand the notion that DeShawn should be stepping up and dropping 15-20 a game. He never has been that type of player so when the guy he's suppose to team up with goes out he'll look a lot worse. Let's also not forget he's playing with a nasty nerve injury so really don't try to pin this on DeShawn.

Thank you WashWiz for injecting a little sanity into this hatefest.

Stevenson is a role player. He's pretty good at it provided he is healthy and Arenas is around to draw attention. When paired with Arenas, he shoots almost 50% with a TS% at 56%. He takes care of the ball (1.8 turnovers per 40 minutes) and maintains a 2:1 A/TO ratio while playing good D. he's good at his job, he just lacks the versatility to do things outside of his job description.

Even last year, without Arenas, I thought he did a pretty good job. He brought a toughness that the team lacked. I like that he isn't afraid of any player and relishes the chance to guard good players. There have been more than one game where Butler was getting lit up by some SF and Deshawn switched over onto him and shut him down.

All that said, it's impossible not to notice how bad he is sucking so far this season. His game is truly abysmal right now. He is shooting just 37% from the field and 28% from three point range while scoring just 11 points per 36 minutes. Meanwhile his defense has been terrible and he is completely incapable of generating his own shot. And as the final insult, his on/off differential is -28.8 points per 100 possessions and his PER differential at SG is -11.2. My guess is that his Roland Ranking would be the worst in the league among major minute players if it weren't for Etan Thomas' suckitude.

I don't think it's unfair to expect a player who is quite possibly the worst starter in the league (as of right now) to maybe NOT jack shots up like he does. I don't think it's unreasonable to restrict him to open jumpshots (yes, I realize he won't get many without Arenas and with a sucky back-court mate) and definitely ZERO isolation fade-aways, quick-jack 3's in transition, etc.

That, along with his defense, is what I have a problem with now. I am not pinning terrible shooting %'s on a player. If they're getting good looks and not converting them like they normally do, that will correct itself in time. But there is absolutely no reason to exacerbate it, like Stevenson is doing.

That's what bugs me and I feel like it's a completely legitimate complaint.

(and I agree with Fish, when you're as terrible as DS is right now, you have no room to do your little hand gesture - you look ridiculous)

Your right. Stevenson is only a complimentary player. You know that, we know that, but he doesn't.

So instead of starting a complementary player, why don't we put in Young?

And have this as our bench...

Blatche
Songaila
McGuire
Stevenson
Daniels

Yikes! Can you say ZERO perimeter offense?

I'm all for starting your best players but without some bench scoring it's going to be hard for any team to win. That's why San Antonio always ends up making Manu their 6th man. It gives them more balance.

The Spurs can afford to have Manu come off the bench. Really, it doesn't matter who starts or comes off the bench as compared to how minutes are distributed, total minutes and crucial minutes. With that being said, I think people underestimate the synergistic effect of having good offensive players play together. While only one player can shoot at a time, the more threats you have out there at the same time, the harder it is for the defense to cover them all. It's nice to scoring off the bench, but if you're always down 10 early on, that's a tough hill to climb. Desuckashawn is a complete self-check. For much of his career he's been that way. Only when Gil is feeding him like a baby bird does Stevenson approach a competent offensive player. His shot selection is horrible. His defense is overrated. If Nick Young gets 28 minutes a game the rest of the way out, I don't care if he starts or not.

That's a very valid point. But what's better: going down by 10 or having the subs come in with the game tied and give up a 15 point lead (which is what that bench would do)?

Maybe we should go back to having Dixon start at PG? There isn't much size or playmaking difference but unlike Dee Brown Juan can actually make an open shot. Dee Brown as a starter still bothers me.

This is exactly why I wanted Grunfeld to trade for a decent-to-solid PG over the summer, just in case Gil wasn't ready to go right away or AD got hurt (both of which have happened). Even somebody like Marko Jaric would drastically improve our current backcourt.

"This is my third year here and I've never, ever had to create for myself," said Stevenson, who has racked up 33 assists in the last five games. "My game is to spot up and hit threes. When you look at the shots I made [Thursday night], they were spot-up threes. That's no excuse. I'm a pro, but right now, we need a point guard to distribute the ball to our scorers and that's what I've got to do.
