Redskins RB Portis: Vick can do what he wants

Post#1 » by Monkeyfeng06 » Mon May 21, 2007 11:29 pm

While prosecutors and the league try to find out if Michael Vick was involved in a dog fighting ring at a Virginia house that he owned, one NFL player says it doesn't matter if he did take part.

"I don't know if he was fighting dogs or not, but it's his property, it's his dog," Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis told WAVY-TV in Virginia. "If that's what he wants to do, do it. I think people should mind their business."

When told that dog fighting is a felony, Portis replied, "It can't be too bad of a crime."

I get the general point he's trying to make about players, their private lives and NFL Witch Hunts, but Dog Fighting is pretty bad morally, and its a felony.

I think Portis could have voiced support with some different words.

Plus, starving and torturing dogs makes for some awesome fights. Really, you have to watch it live to appreciate what the abuse does to their psyches. Its good stuff

Maybe I'm too proud of being a human being, but I'm the complete opposite of PETA.... I'll eat anything that tastes good, I've been hunting (didn't care for it though)... but I've also seen dogfights and cockfights, and they are pretty terrible.

Im willing to bet the scenario is that Vick knew the guy was training dogs for fighting, and just didn't want to interfere with his cousin ( I think its cousin ) and his life, so long as it didn't affect his. I know I wouldnt run to the police if one of my relatives was involved in that business - I'd probably just try and stay as far away as possible from it.

Its not about running to the police. The guy was doing this on Vick's property. Its one thing to not turn people in, its another to knowingly let them commit multiple felonies on your property.

That's completely true. I wouln't want to tell on my family, but I wouldn't let them get ME in trouble in the process.

Me being an ATL fan, I hope he ends up OK. But Portis' comments are horrible, and dogfighting is also.

Portis isn't a scholar over here... he's not known for being the smartest cat around.

What it comes down to... is family vs. the law, and I hate to say it, but I'd look the other way for a family member every time, short of rape or murder. I guess that just comes down to a personal choice... basically, some people will understand where Vick might be / is coming from, and some people won't... although its a terrible crime, I wouldnt want to interfere with a family members' business, although I'd let them know that they oughta stop. But I have an extremely tight knit family... :dontknow:

Portis should probably focus on coming up with some more costume ideas that aren't funny or amusing so he can bring more attention to himself for something other than being an idiot(aka, a not funny or amusing idiot).

I don't think you guys understand, this is something that goes on in the type of places these guys are from, its not something that is uncommon, certainly not something that would be on the national news if my family was fighting dogs on my old property.

That is such a load of ****. Not your opinion, or anything you said. But the cop out idea that, this is a normal thing in hoods or whatever. I am an almost 22 year old white(Italian) dude who grew up on the southside of phoenix.

Almost all of my friends growing up are dead or in jail. I often hung out with bloods, known here as "The South side posse" blood gang from Chicago. I would say I have seen, been around or been involved with some pretty shady things. I have seen dog fighting, and alot of the Mexicans here really enjoy the cock fighting too.

But in no way shape or form, should anyone with a heart or kind of non homicial feelings look at dog fighting or any kind of animal fight like, its a cool thing. Or look at it as sport. These animals literally kill each other, for what? So you can get off watching, them do it.

I seen that garbage growing up. I was stupid and cruel then, and it is now. Michael Vick obviously involved in some way, shape or form. Should be suspended for the year as well. If Pacman gets off without being charged, but pretty much having a bad rep, and giving the league a bad image. So should Mr. Vick.

Portis dosent make himself look any better. Its so ignorant to even look at things in the way he is, and just comes off as another stupid athlete, who wasnt lucky enuogh to be blessed by god, would probably be dead or sitting around in prison, waiting to die.

I am not, some tree hugging, PETA worshiping liberal. I do go hunting from time to time. I actully have a collection of "exotic animals" namly snakes, a large male water monitor, and a number of large tarantulas, and scorpions. All of which I have fed, anything from rabbits, mice, crickets, etc. I do eat meat, often actully. Elk is one of my favorite things to eat actully. Along with types of seasfoods. Point is, im not a tree hugging liberal. I even think what Vick(allegedly) did was wrong.

Anyone who, has the idea that...These guys are from bad areas of town where these things are accepted(not to call you out specifically NO) are giving these guys too much credit. There comes a point in your life, where those of us lucky enough to come from poverty and make it out, grow up...Look at the way we grew up, and say I never wanna go back. If you do, your stupid period.

My understanding is that all the stuff about it being Vick's family is PR garbage. Saying on the radio the other day that supposedly they have pictures of Vick (as yet unreleased) with the dogs, that he sold some of the fighting dogs to teammates, there are videos of him at fights, etc etc.

It sounds like, from what I've heard, I think it was Jason Cole being interviewed on the LeBatard show a couple weeks back.

I seen dogfighting before and it didn't seem that bad. It doesn't mean I want to go on a rampage and murder people. I just see them as animals, does that make me a bad guy?

I think I might agree with Portis. Dogs are considered property and what I choose to do with my property, on my own property, should be my buisness.

How far are you going to slide down the slippery slope? I can't get my house inspected for termites, roaches, and rats because they are living, breathing animals?

I bet this was to divert the attention away from his "Redskins will make the NFC championship" quote

You know what, I agree with lpsevier on this. I get the sense that Portis was just generally trying to convey a right to privacy in the life of these athletes, but it came out in the wrong way.
