Why I hate Yao, why he disappoints
I don't know about you guys but this is the exact reason why I hate Yao Ming.
Its games like this (Heat game), where you just shake your head and say "Why can't he just do this every game", why can't our team knock down the open shots (at least at a good %), its games like this where you see 2-3 defenders swarm Yao in the middle and he kicks it out for a pass, repost, or a score. Where he goes 28pts,60%FG, 12 rebounds, 4 assists (no blocks, but i am sure that will come) 10-11 FT and pretty much makes it look effortless.
Its games like these you wish Yao would just display at least 70% of all the games or show up in the playoffs.
Games like this would bring so many damn easy nights for the Rockets.
But no.........we get the Yao who we know can't do this every game, but damn i wish he could just do it for 70% of all 82 games and than bring it to the playoffs.
Than I wouldn't want to punch a hole in my Wall, when Yao misses a close range dunk, or takes a fall or lets a lesser man push him around or having to deal with the poor ref calling on his big frame.
Happy Early Thanksgiving to you guys.

There's another player on this team that's even more disappointing....Both at times are far too content with passing and letting someone else do the work, especially McGrady.

Why I hate Shaq, why he disappoints.
All he has to do is hit a free throw to ice the game! If he could just practice them more he'd make them. Since he doesn't, we're stuck without our best player at the end of the game, which makes us a really weak team to close out, or we have to have a big lead.
---
I had an argument with a friend of mine a few days ago that one of the main reasons Jason Kidd is not one of the best point guards ever (top 2-5) is that the other point guards were all more scoring capable. Kidd has always been one of the best defensive/rebounding/assists points, but can't shoot. Still, he's always been regarded as a franchise player, when he clearly isn't, since he can't be relied on for the scoring load to any degree. In his 13-14 years, he's only had 3-4 where he had any business shooting the ball, and those years were probably statistical aberations.
The thought is that it's not Kidd's fault he was relied on for scoring when in terms of purely being a point he's tops. The reason he won't ever be ranked higher is the fault of GMs (one I'm sure he has greatly enjoyed), whose overpriced contracts with him kept them from getting better scoring options for him to feed and instead forced them to rely on the inconsistent shooting of their "franchise player". Franchise/superstar point he is, franchise/superstar player he is not.
Dunno if there's any credence to that or not, but it's a thought.

* I said he was functionally mis-rated not overrated. He seems to be playing pretty decent so far this year, too. We'll see if that holds up.

Re: Why I hate Yao, why he disappoints
Everyone knows what Yao can do when he gets position. Now I am sure if Adelman has come with some new ways to beat the front or if the eastern conference teams are not up to par with the scouting reports....but in these last few games he showed how good he really is. The turnovers where down..he made quick, decisive moves...knew exactly when and where to pass...and when to score.
The problem with Yao will always be establishing position. If indeed he can do that consistently our offense will flow as it should.

Watching parts of Dallas game tonite and it was mentioned w/great astonishment that Kidd will soon be in the top ten players making 3pt shots. When he was younger he could have scored more when he drove, but he chose to pass.
Kidd's problem in Dallas is he's best suited to run a running offense-and the team is really built to run-but he's playing for a slow-down coach. Dallas' problem is their offense collapses when Kidd is not on the court. Boo-hoo.
As to Yao when it counts,2 yrs ago in Game 7 vs Utah, last 4 minutes of a tied game, the Rockets went to Yao on 6 of the 7 last meaningful possesions. He scored on 4 of them,McGrady found Chuck for a basket on the other. You score on 5 of 7 possesions down the stretch, you should win. Unless you let the other team get 3 offensive rebounds and make 2 3pt shots off of them.
The Rockets are still very poor at getting the ball in to Yao,only McGrady being able to hit Yao just as Yao gets perfect position. The other Rockets seem to only be able to pass it to Yao when he's standing still and far too many of their passes are bounce passes. Yao has to bend over and reach for those, allowing his defender the opportunity to root him out, moving him several feet away from basket and often seeming to unbalance Yao. When Yao gets a chest-high pass he is much more decisive and effective.
Defenses are able to front Yao because none of the Rocket PFs is a credible threat from outside. Their man can drop into paint and protect against lobs over fronting defender. I think that's why Adelman toyed w/the idea of Ron at the PF spot. He and Battier can drag their defenders out to the 3pt line, freeing up the middle for Yao.

Did anyone else notice that Yao didn't touch the ball much at all in high post against the heat last game?

I don't like Yao, but sometimes I asked myself why he is not the best offensive player in the game. He's got so much size and skill. This guy should be scoring 30 with ease...yet he doesn't.

Re: Why I hate Yao, why he disappoints
Yao's offense has been great (Miami, Dallas), mediocre (yesterday), and bad (Boston) this year, but the constant has been his awful, porous defense. In addition to being awful in the pick and roll and guarding the perimeter, which have been constants throughout his career, he is also not clogging the lane/protecting the basket, and he is doing a poor job on post defense. These were areas where he was fine previously, yet now he has slipped. He must improve his play on defense in all areas.

Re: Why I hate Yao, why he disappoints
Last night, Adelman made a huge mistake of having Yao guard Murphy. Murphy's been a good 3 point shooter since recovering from his injury and Yao was unable to guard him out the perimeter.
But I am glad Yao's making progress. When healthy, his offense is the least of our concerns and he should average at least 20/10 this season.

Couldnt have said it better,,,,,but thats a lot of problems for a guy whos getting the max and is one of our stars.
I wouldnt be worried if it was something that could be improved,,,,but it seems like yao is on the way down,,,,,hes slower,,,,,cant jump,,,,i dont even remember the last time he dunked in a game him and Mcgrady. Two injury prone guys on the downward spiral is to risky,,,,,we need to package some of our depth with one of them to improve our offense because if it was half decent with our great defense we would be destroying teams

Re: Why I hate Yao, why he disappoints
Offseason: YAY WE GOT ARTEST OUR OFFENSE WILL BE UNSTOPPABLE NOW!!!!!
Season: Yao McGrady and Artest suck, we have to fix this.
Overlooked: We got exactly what we wanted and are perfectly on the pace we should be given the circumstances.
Reality:
Yao, Tracy, Artest Combined salaries: $44,647,424 (2008-09), $39,617,886 (2009-10).
Scola, Landry, Head, Hayes, Brooks, $11,084,488 (2008-09), $12,474,866 (2009-10). (i.e. combined make less than Yao, even if you add in Rafer)
We've already made the moves to improve our offense, and the improvements will show if we ever get healthy. We have OUTSTANDING bargains on the players outside of our stars. Trading them will not net equal value.
Our depth is keeping us afloat right now, do you REALLY want to get rid of it? Health will do more for us than trades at this point. What more do you want, other than the default-per-this-board/city 100% win rate and 18ppg avg margin of defeat (anything less is unsatisfactory). I was arguing with a buddy of mine on this last night, as always, for like 2 hours. Sure we're doing great all things considered, but we have to have more, and we have to have it NOW.
edit:
One day, hopefully soon, moofs will finally realize that not everyone can be made to see the light and stop trying to convince them ALL. Until then he will heave occasional sighs of relief that at least the level of complaining and random off-the-wall trade proposals are far below what they have been the past several years... until seeing another one.
