Um, I'm sure I'll be trashed for not knowing what happened to him, but I'm more interested in his explanation about the luxury tax and when it comes into effect.

Sorry, folks, I got promoted at work--in itself, that's good, but it left me a lot less free time to hang out here.
As for your question about the luxury tax, I'm not sure I'm clear on what you mean. There is a luxury tax limit set each year...you pay the tax based on your total roster payroll on the last day of the season.
(Interesting note: that's right, the LAST day of the season. So if the Jazz are worried about the tax in 2009-2010, they don't necessarily have to get anything done during the off-season. They could conceivably make trades mid-season with teams under the cap. That is a calculated risk, though.)
As for whether the Jazz have to pay the tax next year, it's too soon to know. Boozer, Okur, Korver, Millsap, Knight and Price all either will or could become free agents. We may also have a draft pick to pay, depending on where we finish (if it's high enough, it could go to Minnesota...that will help). We could also get a little breathing room if we decline Fesenko's option and Harpring retires. It will be awfully tough to keep everyone, though, unless LHM decides the tax ain't so bad after all. We will almost certainly lose one of Boozer or Millsap.

Thanks, but what I'm really looking for is your source of information. I tried finding it in Larry Coon's faq, but couldn't. I'm 90% sure that it must be found there somewhere. If not, I would greatly appreciate were you got this information.

When determining the amount of tax a team owes, the league uses its team salary (see question number 14) on the date of their last regular season game (i.e., if a player is traded away before the end of the season, then none of his salary is taxed), with the following adjustments...
