Sloan's Bad Memory

Post#1 » by Racer X » Sat Nov 29, 2008 6:06 pm

"We have thrown more alley-oops than I've seen in my career," Sloan said. "John Stockton never threw an alley-oop in his career. How many have we thrown away trying to make those plays? We've had some of them go right, but when they go awry, what does it look like?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJXB43eBDwQ (check 18 seconds in [p.s. the Mailman was a bad, bad man])

I think its safe to say that Stockton didnt have the personnel to throw many alleyoop's. I think if he played with the Jazz of today he would lob em about as often as Deron.

In Sloan's defense... I think we have gone to the alley oop well a few times too many. There have been a lot of bad lobs.

I do think that Sloan invoking Stock is pretty lame though... the demeanor of Sloan's comments are revealing. He is trying so hard to be a 'new' Sloan, but his true colors shine through on this one.

Also, that Malone vid was nostalgic. That was the reason I became a Jazz fan right there.

^^^^
I think AK might force some alley oop's from time to time, but Deron throwing a bad alley oop is pretty rare isnt it?

I am sure Sloan obviously remembers that Stock threw oops, it's that Stockton never did it to show off. He did it on designed plays, (btw that play in the video that Stock throws the oops is obviously designed, look at all the back screens) but he never did it when there were easier passes to be made.

I agree with him that Brewer, Ronnie Price, AK and CJ have all thrown bad alley-oops this year, the good thing is Deron doesn't try to force those usually.

^ I agree 100%. Deron's decision to throw the oop is usually a good one. Also, I don't think Sloan was talking about Deron either, he is just dumb and doesn't realize that by invoking Stock, then you are pointing the finger at Deron.

I actually agree with Jerry on this one....... Nobody outside of Deron, Knight and AK, should be attempting alley-oop passes....... Way too many turnovers.......

I don't mind if the recipient is Brewer. Other than that most of our players aren't athletic enough to react and adjust fast enough, unless they know it's coming and the pass is good.

Brew on the other hand can often flag down the pass and pull it out if it's off target.

But, what about all the missed dunks lately? Stockton never had any of those.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."
