Leo Rautins just said that Sam didn't have a defensive philosophy. And that Jason Kapono told him that Pat Riley always taught his players what to do in every situation, which was the difference between Riley and Sam.

Sad to see Sam leave as he was a pillar in our tough years and we literally saw he transform through them. Sadder is the criticism he takes for players under performing and by this board that seems to blame everything that's bad on a coach and all that's great on the players. Does Jose become the player he is today without Sam. Does CB4 understand what it is to be a leader and top player without Sam. Doubt it.
Sam had his faults and at the end of the day you can't fire 13 players. I hope the team realizes that this is a serious business that demands their attention. Each and every player needs to take a long look in the mirror and realize that their lackluster effort cost a man his job.

I don't know man...when BC says the team isn't practising fast breaks in practice then WTF has sam been doing? thats a pretty damning statement right there. Mitchell basically limited himself and the team so its his fault for that one there.

i hate to rain on your parade but messina has said several times he did not see himself coaching in the nba at this point
on the other hand i hear isiah is avaible...

my choince would be ivanovic tho, get hoffa back and ivanovic would turn bosh into the worst player of all times, and hoffa into an all star, then you would unload bosh on the knicks and use it as a great expiring to grab delfino again

delfino from deep = championship

ok im as happy as the next person that sam mitchell is gone

but lets think about this for a second

jay triano was an assistant of the raptors
im sure if he had any philosophies or plays or anything him and sam could have discussed it and tried it
why is it any different now that hes the head coach that they will work
are you guys saying he has philosophies but never told sam about them and they were never tried

i dont know im not being pessimistic but i just dont see him bringing any new plays to the team

He never told Sam because Sam wouldn't listen anyway. That's why he had no lead assistant, and why Jim Todd left.

Sam has a reputation for not listening to his assistant head coaches. At the end of the day, the head coach runs the ship.

Keep in mind, Triano's survived 3 coaching regimes from Lenny Wilkens to Kevin O'Neill to Sam Mitchell. That's pretty tough to do as an assistant coach, so he must be doing something right to be able to stick around for 7 years.

I wonder if Jay Triano would be considered for a position on any team not in Canada.

When I heard this news I was so happy, and now that it's sinked in, I'm ecstatic. This is the best news possible for the Raptors. Mitchell was gonna take this team nowhere and now he'll be lucky to land another head coaching job in the NBA. So long Mitchell!

Press conference call with Jay T:

-how did you react? a little bittesrsweet. Look forward to moving forwar
-philosophies? defensively? We'll start trying to implement them tomorrow. Things that I'm going to put in over the course of time, for right now, just some tweaks.
-tweaks? philosophical changes? We've got a lot of talent, and we are one of the bigger, and better teams with our inside play. We want to showcase those guys. Hopefully that will open some the areas on the floor.

-what do they need to do to run? first thing, is getting stops. there are things defensively that we're going to try to do. conditioning, and mindset is something that we're going to have to develop.
-we need easier ways to score the ball
-biggest influences? Jack Donahue

-first canadian coach? haven't even thought of it. Excited as another way of representing the country
-did you talk with Sam and players? Sam - great conversation, at peace, professional, he kind of thought it would happen, and hoped that one of us (assistants) would get it.
-players? spoke with them, none of us were happy with how things have gone lately. I'll let them know my philosophy, who I am as a person, most of these guys have known me for a long time.

-Bosh, minutes? Rotation? With the way we play, I don't know if he can play this many minutes. More up tempo, quicker subs. quicker tempo.
-how are you ready for this job? different levels, broadcasters perspective, national team, 6 years with the Raptors.
-were you ready for this? I didn't want it to happen under these circumstances, I would've liked a training camp, etc, but you always keep your notes, I've always been a student of the game.
