He was good enough to be hired by USA Basketball.

I actually had a feeling after the NJ game...then new for sure this week...I mentioned it in another thread about his demeanor, but you could tell he knew. I have mixed feelings. I am friends with Jay from my playing days and I know he will work his ass off I just hope he gets a fair shot.
Also I broke it before it was announced from someone who heard it directly from Sam but couldn't say...anyway now it's out there but I am glad I was the first one to post this one !! wooohhhooooo bball4242 is back !! Where is Blacktop? Where is Mak? Where is PJ? Where is Hank? Let's have a reunion ! haha

Finally. To be honest I thought Colangelo was going to do this soon after he came over, but we had a good roster and Sam took home a COTY because of it. Hard to fire the COTY, even if he sucks.

Longtime lurker finally inspired to make first post with the brilliant news.

THANK GOD. Best possible thing to hear regarding the Raps. This year can be viewed as a success in that both Swirsk and Smitch are history; I can take the organisation more seriously now.

Very true and a good point, would he be considered as a contender for a coaching spot in the NBA outside the Raptors, just kind of get the feeling that he is going to be short changed by many people for the job with them saying he only got the job because he is Canadian not because he is a solid coach.

Well, now that it's sunk in a bit. I'm honestly shocked. I mean it's been due but I honestly thought BC would wait...

Anyway, I'm excited. There's a lot of great candidates out there, among them JVG, Avery Johnson, Eddie Jordan, and there's probably some others I'm missing. But now we can start fresh and a great coach will immediately work to shape the roster in his favor, so that may mean some more moves.

All in all it's a great move that BC may have had in mind for a while, but last night gave him the necessary cover to do finally pull the trigger. Only thing I'll miss is the Shats talk...

As having Interim coach, Jay Triano in, Does this pave the way for a trade involving Steve Nash?

I don't get why people are complaining about Triano, what the hell is Colangelo supposed to do? At this point it was addition by subtraction by removing Mitchell.. The players had tuned him out and it was important to get rid of him..

We have a game in two days..So I guess you wanted JVG or Flip to meet the team in Utah?Or maybe go without a coach and just let the players play until we hired a new one? Triano is the most experienced assistant, so has to take over for the time being, hence the term interim... Unless he leads us to the Finals, he's probably not going to continue as head coach next season.. So relax..

kcheleb wrote:ok im as happy as the next person that sam mitchell is gone

but lets think about this for a second

jay triano was an assistant of the raptors
im sure if he had any philosophies or plays or anything him and sam could have discussed it and tried it
why is it any different now that hes the head coach that they will work
are you guys saying he has philosophies but never told sam about them and they were never tried

i dont know im not being pessimistic but i just dont see him bringing any new plays to the team

Worked pretty well for NJ when they canned Byron Scott and hired his assistant Lawrence Frank. An assistant coach can do wonders if the head coach respects him enough to listen, case in point Doc Rivers and Tom Thibadaux(sp?) in Boston. If the head coach is bull headed like Sam then his assistants can't overstep thier bounds. You don't think Triano wasn't rolling his eyes when Sam debuted his 100 shats theory a couple of years back. When Bosh has already called out Sam twice this season you knew it was coming and I'm sure BC talked to Bosh before doing anything because Bosh seems like a player who won't sugercoat it and give an honest opinion.

At least TSN showed the firing as the first segment on thier show. Christ, Sportsnet waited almost 15 minutes into the show to report it after they got all thier hockey crap out of the way. How many times do we have to listen to everybody and thier mother talk about what Avery did, and then they talk about the Carolina Hurricanes firing before thier own basketball team. I know they don't show Raps games anymore but that's pathetic.

Where is that guy that said he had inside source when he said the Raps might have interest in Marbury and that a trade of Hump and Kapono for Gerald Wallace was in place before, and that we should keep a close eye on things going into the Bobcats game after Sam Mitchell and Colangelo had their meeting?

I am pretty sure Sam Mitchell would have been fired had the Raptors lost that game to the Bobcats. Sam Mitchell thanked Chris Bosh for saving his job by having a monster game. It was unfortunate the the Raptors also won the game against the Hawks afterwards as well. Now finally, after an embarassing game in Denver, Sam Mitchell is gone. Obviously the guy with inside source knew and expected a Sam Mitchell would be on the hot seat and that a firing was to come sooner than most of us anticipated.

We had him for a while and he was a total character. BC was fair with him and gave him plenty of time to build his coaching resume. Unfortunately, his time was due. He did a good job conditioning the players and helping them improve, but what we need now is someone that can call plays and get us a few points here and there due to smarts. Sam's main thing was that his players always played hard for him, but this season the players are kinda giving up little by little. It was time for him to go. Good memories and good luck to him.

It looks to me like we are going to be running a lot more now, starting with defense as the main emphasis.

I'm just glad that Mike D'Antoni is already employed. As much as S.M was a smart a#@ with the media in general, D'antoni seems so smug almost all of the time. Can't stand em...

I hope its Avery. I think the Bargnani / Dirk comparisons have some merit. He is quite the motivator. (maybe b-balls answer to Jacques Demers)

He was obviously running Sam Mitchell's crappy playbooks for that 1 game. It was impossible for him to implement his new philosophies for just 1 game since it was still Sam Mitchell's team back then, so you still have to follow Sam Mitchell's playbook. Now that Mitchell is gone and it is Jay's team for the moment, he can implement his own things.
