?s about the '05 J.Johnson Trade
No real reason to look back, but I'd like to understand what the Suns got back in sign & trading of disgruntled Sun Joe Johnson. I know we got Diaw and Robin Lopez, but was there actually another Atlanta lottery protected pick? If so, what became of it? Did a 5 million dollar exception go to the Suns? If so, what did it translate into if anything?

The crux of the (proposed) deal via Marc Stein...
The proposed deal, according to sources, would bring guard Boris Diaw and two lottery-protected future first-round picks to Phoenix -- along with a trade exception in the $5 million range -- after Johnson signs a contract under terms established by Atlanta: $70 million over five years with an estimated balloon payment of $20 million up front...
...Johnson stunned Suns managing partner Robert Sarver by asking Sarver directly not to match the offer, telling his boss that he prefers to continue his career as a Hawk. On Friday, at teammate Steve Nash's charity game in Toronto, Johnson revealed the request to ESPN.com and spoke excitedly about the opportunity to play point guard with the Hawks.
So, what did the Suns actually get for accommodating Johnson?

More from that article (having read it again in years)...
Given Sarver's stated aversion to letting his annual payroll stray far beyond $50 million, replacing Johnson with Bell, Diaw, two draft picks, a trade exception and perhaps even Finley (if the Suns are so fortunate) holds considerable appeal.
...it seem the Suns felt trading Johnson would be ok. That in addition to Diaw/2picks & execeptions. it opened the door to signing Raja Bell and Michael Finley. It's too bad Finley didn't bite.

I think we eventually used that other ATL pick to draft Rondo, who we then traded for a pick next year that we used to draft Rudy....who we then traded along with James Jones for...nothing.

The Rondo selection was a PHX pick via LAL

Didn't that pick become protected once Atlanta fell into the top 3 in lottery? It was the 3rd pick that got Al Horford right?

Yes, the '07 pick became protected and was pushed to '08. = Robin Lopez
But was there another pick?

Well, probably not Horford, since he would have went 3rd regardless, but they could have gotten a good SF that they could develop. Brewer/Wright/Green.

It was the Rondo pick, from LAL, via Boston and Atlanta, traded back to Boston.

Re: ?s about the '05 J.Johnson Trade
at #4 Brewer or Wright (likely Suns picks) wouldn't be helping much now.
The best case scenario had the Suns dealing Marion/filler and the ATL '07 potential top 3 pick to Minnesota in February of 2007...
...For Garnett!
Championship!

How could Atlanta have the 21st worst record????
...LA's original pick?

Yes, LA's original pick, traded to Boston, then to Atlanta, then to Phoenix, then used for Rondo, then back to Boston. Wow, that one was a doozy.

So the Suns got Diaw, Lopez, and had Rondo in hand...darn! Again, too bad Finley didn't want to come back to PHX with the financial opening.
Still wondering about the 5mil trade exception?

We let the TPE expire.

Yeah, basically Diaw + Lopez + Rondo + trade exception
We shoulda done what nearly everybody wanted us to do at the time, keep our draft pick (Rondo), and use the cash we used on Banks to keep Tim Thomas locked up instead...

Too bad we didn't keep that Rondo fella. Better than any back-up point guard we currently have...GREAT judge of talent Suns FO...my question is, was that a Kerr, D'Antoni, or BC trade?
