Ah, December, when a young man's thoughts turn to mistletoe and presents under the tree.
Meanwhile, the rest of us think about cold beer and why in the world the entire Mavericks' nation wants the team to bring in Stephon Marbury.
OK, that segue makes no sense, but neither does the Marbury talk. We here at the command ship got more e-mails this week about Marbury than all the other topics put together.
Fine. Have it your way. Bring in the troubled guard, let him pout when he doesn't get enough playing time, watch him divide and poison the locker room and then go through the messy divorce that invariably takes place with this guy.
By the way, the Mavericks can't even think about all that until the previous messy divorce in New York is finalized.
This is not a personal attack on Marbury. Don't know the dude personally. But people around the league think of him in the above-mentioned way. And when that many smart basketball people are scared to touch Marbury, I feel comfortable in suggesting that the Mavericks steer clear.
Then again, they have been known to have their Dennis Rodman moments in the past. How'd that work out for them?
But they did take a chance on Jerry Stackhouse, and he turned his game and persona around here.
At the very least, however, the Mavericks should be very careful before jumping into this relationship. And to the fans, I would say to be careful what you wish for.

Re: DN: Dallas Mavericks should stay away from Marbury
I just read some of the comments below his article and noticed a reader mentioned Chris Bosh.
Q: Mark Cuban should be all out in bringing Chris Bosh back to Dallas. Here's a young kid from Lincoln High School who is a free agent (in 2010). If Cuban can pay $21 million for Kidd, he can surely pay whatever it takes to get Bosh to the Mavericks.
Bob R.
Sefko: To paraphrase the Forrest Gump line, Bob, you are a bleeping genius. It's a great idea, and you didn't even mention Stephon Marbury once.
But the Mavericks have been way ahead of you for a couple years. They have been watching Bosh from afar and trying to think of ways to get him to Dallas, in a non-tampering sort of way, of course.
But it's just not that easy. First of all, Toronto is going to make it very difficult for Bosh to leave. Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo has done his best to surround Bosh with quality players in Toronto. Whether it translates into wins, we won't know for a while.
But there's another problem. The Mavericks have to be able to offer a maximum contract. Or have assets that they can offer in a sign-and-trade that would be palatable to the Raptors. It can be done. But it's never easy.
For now, I suggest you monitor the Raptors with great interest. What happens to them on the court will go a long way toward determining what happens to Bosh in a couple of summers.

Unless Dallas has a big endorsment deal for Bosh, I will see him staying in Totonto for the bigger raises. To come to Dallas would have to invole trading Dirk for a huge expiring and good talent or very high picks on rookie scale contracts.

I'd certainly go for that. I'd rather see a 26 year old Bosh play with a 37 year old Kidd than a 32 year old Dirk playing with a 37 year old Kidd. Not to mention what we would get out of the Dirk trade.
This is a long-shot but with Nash being a FA in 2010 and seems to have interest in Canada, I'm wondering if Toronto would consider trading Bosh for Dirk next season. We would obviously have to give up more in the deal (like maybe Howard), but I'd still consider it. Dirk would certainly help Toronto's cause in signing Nash and it would basically be a trade of Bosh for Dirk, Howard and Nash along with another player from the Mavs.
Dirk, Howard, Bass and Damp for Bosh and O'Neal???

Re: DN: Dallas Mavericks should stay away from Marbury
There was a semi-agreement btwn these three teams for this trade on the trade forum....
Dallas sends Nowitzki, Green, Barea
Dallas gets Aldridge, Bayless, Batum, LaFrentz
Phoenix sends Staudamire, Late 1st round pick
Phoenix gets Nowitzki, Green
Portland sends Aldridge, Bayless, Batum, LaFrentz
Portland gets Staudamire, Barea, late 1st rd pick
I think Aldridge (potential of Sheed) being born in dallas and going to UT Texas makes it sort of a homecoming. I was pushing on this board to buy picks and try to get Batum and he is, in my mind, the next Tayshawn Prince (Aldridge similar to Sheed). Bayless has had a hard time cracking the rotation, but may excel here. That is 3 rookie scale contracts and 3 huge expirings (Kidd, Stack, LaFrentz) that will get us down to about $52 mil next year.
If we can swing that Howard for Simmons, our 2010 pick and Bobby Simmons, I think we will be set pretty good.
Diop - Dampier
Aldridge - Bass (resigned)
Batum - Williams - Simmons
Wright
Terry - Bayless
2009 NJ and Dal picks
With Simmons, Dampier, & Wright being 2010 friendly, we can trade for more talent or let them expire for a good 2010 core.
In 2010...
Dallas 2010 picl / Diop
Aldridge / Bass
Batum / Dallas 2009 pick
James / NJ 2009 pick
Terry / Bayless

Re: DN: Dallas Mavericks should stay away from Marbury
I like the idea of Aldridge in Dallas. The Mavs should pull the trigger on a Dirk for Aldridge+La Frentz with or without the other moving parts. I still like Howard for Simmons+ picks. I see the Mavs retooling without having to start from scratch if the FO could make these trades happen. 2010 Mavs could look to adding one of the free agents to the new mix. I wont get my hopes up but its a great idea JES12.

Portland would never do that trade.

Are you saying Dirk has no trade value or Portland wants to stay young?

Dirk is not going to Portland. PDX should not go after Dirk. But, the Suns who are win now rebuild 2010 mode, would have a core of 2010 friendly contracts of Dirk & 2 players that want to play with Dirk (Nash & Shaq) instead of the odd man out (Amare).
Amare would fit well on a young team with even talent at all positions like Portland.
Oden - Pryzbilla
Amare - Frye - Diogu
Outlaw - Webster
Roy - Fernandez
Blake - Rodriguez - Barea
Solid 12
Shaq - Lopez
Dirk - Diaw
Hill - Barnes
Barbosa - Bell
Nash - Dragic
Solid 8-9 man playoff rotation

Cubes wouldn't, but he'll think about it with batum and bayless and tons of savings if we start playing bad again.
