Mobley Retires

With Cuttino Mobley still not in uniform following his trade to the New York Knicks, the New York Post has made reference to the possibility of Mobley filing papers for a medical retirement today because of a heart condition.

The move appears to be bizarre considering the condition was detected when Mobley was with the Houston Rockets, and he has played without problems with the Orlando Magic, Sacramento Kings and L.A. Clippers since then.

Mobley was averaging 33 minutes and 14 points a game this season before the the trade.

Allan Houston and Patrick Ewing Jr. are the two likeliest candidates to take Mobley's roster spot.

Glad the the trade happened and pointed out the problem. I don't want Mobley to have a heart attack while playing, Now it is preventable and probably treatable.

This is a real shame, I'd hate to have Cat go out like this. But yeah, I guess its better this way than having him croak while playing. How bad does it suck though, to one day be playing ball in the NBA, get traded and all of a sudden your career is over? No wonder he wasn't a fan of the trade...

I wouldn't mind if Cat came back to play for us. I just hope he's ok, and the Knicks may be making this more serious than it is. He was able to play for all those other NBA teams before.

The article made it sound like Cat was the one initiating the extra tests, and if that's the case, I don't know if we'll see Mobley back in the NBA this year, or ever again. The reason he played for other teams and the Clippers without issues is because he signed a waiver.

It’s a condition that Mobley reportedly signed waivers for while with Houston and Los Angeles, absolving the teams from any culpability in the case of a heart malfunction. He is scheduled for another test in Minnesota on Thursday. According to the source, Mobley initiated the extra testing. “He’s not really focused on basketball, his main concern is his health,” the source said.

It's an absolute must that he look out for his health and family first. At first I thought this was financial move by the Knicks, but if Cat is the one doing the research at least he is being smart. Other athletes have made unfortunate choices in the past, so I hope that Cat does all the research and takes as many tests as he can to be sure. Throughout his time here, Cat has been one of my favorite and most respected players on the team. I was thinking that (had he finished out his contract here) he would be a great addition to the coaching staff one day. I really hope to see him be able to be back on the court in the near future, but if he has played his last NBA game, he went out with a superb performance.

Francis: Mobley 'Didn't Sound Too Good'
Steve Francis told the Houston Chronicle that his friend Cuttino Mobley is despondent over the possibility of early retirement. Mobley has an enlarged heart that could force him to retire.
"That's the same ailment he has played with his whole career," said Francis. "It's terrible. He didn't sound too good today.
"It's tough. I know how much he loves playing basketball. I don't know how he'd react. He's close to a decision."

Good luck to Cat but that said a lot about this mans character and a whole lot about our current teams need to step up. Let's not forget before cat was traded he was our most consistent scorer and best defender. Cat was even on a little run he would get the ball in the post back his man down and drain it what seem like every time.

This is really sad. But it's good he's taking precautions, we don't need another scenario like Reggie Lewis or Hank Gathers.

Should he retire, I think it's necessary that he come back for a Staples Center tribute. It's only fitting.

Edit - Also.. What's up with the Clippers not catching this sooner? Apparently he's had this condition ever since his Houston days, but no one really bothered with it until now?

Since it looks like this retirement thing is gonna go thru with Mobely, I'd like to ask everyone to share their favorite memory of Cat. It could be when he was with the Clippers or otherwise, basketball or non-basketball related, anything at all.

The first and only time I met Cuttino was during a game three seasons ago, the playoff season. Cat was inactive and instead of sitting behind the bench, he was standing back in the tunnel that leads to the locker room. He was wearing a white suit with a ruffled collar and white gator shoes-- no joke. I'm pretty sure there was a pink accent on his lapel too, but for now, let's just leave that as speculation. He shuffled around a lot, until eventually he was standing right next to where I was sitting, only the metal railing separated us. Obviously, I would do the whole "glance and look away" thing; it's not every day you watch a Clips game next to Cat, right? Eventually he caught on, and I realized that he would turn and look at me while I was watching the game, and when glanced back down at him, he looked away. It got pretty awkward pretty quick, at least for me, so I squeezed out a "Hi" and an awkward smile.

"Hey," he said with a nod, and smiled politely.

I have this purse that has the LAC logo all over it, and it was at my feet, near the railing. A couple seconds after saying "Hey," Cat reached through the railing, picked up my purse, pulled out a sharpie from inside his jacket, signed my it, put it back at my feet and said "You're welcome," and walked away with his hands in his pockets.

Yeah, it was tough to hold back the laughter, but I held it till he was far enough away. That was one of my favorite moments at Staples Center, period, all thanks to Cat and his white gators. Its safe to say that Cat always carried himself with style and a twist of good intent, and I'm gonna miss that around these parts.

I don't believe it. I think its a ploy for the Knicks to save some money. Sounds like everybody has known about this for a long time and nobody ever cared before, it can't be too serious.

I bet this works out Mobley's favor. I bet he'll sign on with winning team for the minimum, perhaps Houston, the Spurs, even the Lakers.

uh...no. how is this a "ploy" when mobley is one visiting all these heart specialists? he has an enlarged heart and the condition has gotten worse since the last time he had it checked - way back before he was traded/signed with the clippers(cant remember which). knicks don't save any money anyway. because it is a pre-existing condition, they will have to waive him and pay his full salary for the next 2 years. they receive no injury exception.
