I got to go with Erick Dampier. His defense on Shaq and help defense on Amare was superb. Add in his offensive game and Dampier dominated the paint. Without him, Dirk annd company would never have had the game open up.

Dampier also had 3 assists.

Runner up 39 & 9 Dirk who capatalized off of Dampier.

I though Kidd deserved recognition too. Only 4 pts, but 8 ast, 4 reb, 4 steals, 1 block

I jumped out of my seat and shouted when I saw Kidd block Amare. Priceless

anyone could have been the POG
but you gotta give it to Dirk
we know he will never make the NBA all defensive team
but with offensive pressure he put on Amare and gettin him in foul trouble forced Amare not to be as aggressive on both ends of the floor

at you saying Dirk capitalized off Damp to score 39 . . . as if Damp was creating offense for Dirk. Most of Damp's points came off garbage buckets. And if Shaq didn't come out to defend Dirk, it's not because he was worried about Damp, it's because he's a lazy fatass.

So you don't agree that the Shaq and the suns played us much, much, very much more losely after we made them start shooting a lot after 1) they were in the hole and 2) They couldn't do anything in the middle? Dampier made a team trying to go inside into a jumpshooting team (mainly Amare) and once that happened, I knew we were going to win.

Hell, he did not even play Shaq most of the 2nd half because when Porter put Shaq in, Rick matched with Damp making Shaq utterly useless. Dampier made this into a Amare/Nash game instead of an Amare/Nash/Shaq game. It is also easier to go run & gun (Dirk) when Damp gets a board off a missed or block shot (that Damp created from his D) than it is to take the ball out while they get their D set.

Dirk (and the entire team) most definatly fed off Dampier today.

I have have no problem if Dirk wins this pole 15 to 1, but to think Damp did not open up the game fore the rest of the team is just being blind (either you did not have a TV or your Dirk love goggles blinded you).

damp did a nice job on shaq, everyone who says the contrary hasnt watched the game.
btw, damp is defending shaq quite good ever since he had his famous speech and shaq calling him erica.
but tonight my vote goes clearly to nowitzki.
39 points on 25 shots? any day of the week baby!

Even Eddie Sefco's statement follows the opinions on this thread. I think his vote woud go to Dirk.

The Streakin' Puerto Rican, also known as J.J. Barea, was slicing and dicing the Phoenix Suns.

Erick Dampier – once dubbed Ericka by Shaquille O'Neal – was playing the sort of manly game that dominated the Suns' old-looking center.

Supporting players like Shawne Williams (career-high 12 rebounds) also gave the Mavericks plenty to celebrate after their 112-97 blowout of the Suns at American Airlines Center.

Buried somewhere under those headlines was this: Dirk Nowitzki, 39 points, nine rebounds, 17-of-25 shooting.

"Great players tend to be taken a little for granted because they are great," coach Rick Carlisle said. "It's special if you're a Mavs fan to be able to come and watch him play every night. He's just a tremendous player and tonight, he willed us to a little higher level than we've been at, and that was key.

"It was clear to me he wasn't going to let us lose."

Nowitzki outplayed Amare Stoudemire at the power-forward matchup, and the rest of the Mavericks seemed to take their cue from Nowitzki's overall effort.

They won for the eighth time in nine games and are two games above .500 (10-8) for the first time. They pounded the Suns early, going on a 21-4 blitz to go ahead 49-28 midway through the second quarter.

Only once, early in the fourth quarter, did the Suns draw as close as 10. But Berea, Williams and Jason Terry ignited a 10-0 run to squash the Suns.

Through it all, there was Nowitzki, who was glad to break out of what he perceives as a lukewarm shooting season.

"I had some good games here and there, but shooting 44 percent over the season is not really cutting it," Nowitzki said. "But I felt good tonight."

And it showed. Nowitzki, along with Jason Kidd and Terry, have taken it personally to get the Mavericks back on track as they have dug out from a 2-7 start. Their attitudes seem to have rubbed off on everyone.

Against the Suns, Dampier was a beast. He had 10 rebounds before halftime and finished with 14 to go with nine points, three blocks and three assists. O'Neal, who had rested Tuesday in New Orleans, had four points, five rebounds and one block, while getting the same playing time as Dampier.

And then there was Barea, the diminutive point guard who got his first start of the season – at shooting guard – after the game-winning heroics he supplied Tuesday against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Barea was on the court often with Jason Kidd and occasionally with Kidd and Terry as a three-guard set.

"When we have that lineup in, we have a lot of playmakers on the floor," Barea said. "I just try to get into the lane and finish."

Done

I voted for Dirk the Suns played some really good defense on him and he still hit the shot.

Barea was good but he still made a few bone headed plays last night that bug me.

Damp was great just wish he would do that more when Damp plays well the Mavs are a totally different team.

Williams can't shoot but man can he grab some serious rebounds and play some tough defense.

Between Dampier, Bass and Williams, I see Diop as very expendable. But that's just me.

And thanks for locking the other one.
