Semih Erden watch

Hello guys,

As per Gant's instructions, I'm starting a Semih Erden thread and will update this after each game.

He had been injured and missed the beginning of the season, he has just started playing but Fenerbahce has many young and promising bigs so I'm very curious to see how he does.

Thanks ysF! This is great. It looks like Semih's steadily going up in minutes. I would guess he's just getting into game shape and may still have some lingering injury effects?

What was his injury ysF?

By the way I spent a few weeks in Ankara and Cappadocia in the late 80's. I got stung by a scorpion in Cappadocia.

Turkey is a great country. Beautiful. Also I got a taste for the national drink Raki. Raki!! Highly recommended.

I watched the last game against Tau. He didn`t really stand out and when you see him play you don`t really think he is NBA material. ATM, he is a decent Euroleague player and far from being a top one, which I guess you have to be to make an impact in the NBA.

In the game against Tau he looked pretty lost on defense. His rotations were terrible. I guess due to being out and just coming back from an injury his timing is still off. Defensively he looks kind of soft, doesn`t have a lot of toughness, offensively he looked better. He has a very nice shooting touch for a big guy.

But he does have an interesting personality. I think people would like the guy. He looks kind of goofy on the court.

We will see how he does in a few months but like ysF said Fenerbache has 5-6 talented young big guys, so he probably won`t be getting big minutes.

If he develops he might be a decent back up center in the NBA but I don`t see too much potential in him. OTOH, he is better than POB. I am hoping he will pull a Marc Gasol and turn from an average to a dominant big man in a season.

thanks ysF, but I don't think the Celtics will bring over Erden. We've drafted a couple foreign players in the past and they never seen the light of day in the states.

As a prospect, I like him more than O'Bryant. Erden seems like a better athlete; more fluid and mobile.

I think there's a good chance he'll come over, if only because of his size. When that will be is anyone's guess, but from what (little) I've seen of him so far, he looks pretty good.

What does Raki taste like, Gant?

No way he's coming over

He has as much as a chance of coming to the C's as Albert Miralles, Ben Pepper and Josip Sesar does. Should have just traded the pick.

Raki is the Turkish equivalent of the Greeks' Ouzo. It's an aniseed based concoction. I prefer it to Ouzo. It's stronger and a little less sweet. It has a way of bringing out the Ottoman Empire in your spirit.

It has an effect unlike any other alcoholic beverage, It sort of taps you on the cheek for a while then WHAM- hook to the jaw!

It's pronounced Rahkeh, with a fast stop on the i at the end. The Turks have an i without a dot on top which means a fast stop if I recall correctly. Probably there's a way to make my keyboard do that but I don't know what it is.

I've been tasting Raki ever since. Mmmmm. Yum.

I did some some unusual things back then.

Also, generally you pour some Raki in a glass and add a lot of water, and it turns from clear to white like Ouzo, though it is also drunk straight sometimes too.

I don't think we were going to get much for the last pick in the draft, which is basically the rights to one undrafted free agent. It might not work out with Erden, but at least we have his rights if he ever does break out into something worthwhile, which is exactly what you should do when you have the last pick in the draft imo.

As for what I've read, he looks like he has a decent ceiling, but I'd expect at best he'll be a decent backup C or third C at the least. I'm not going to hold my breath on that either. Maybe he'll develop well overseas, in which case, we'll bring him over, but I can't see him being worth the roster spot these next couple years.
