10 quick things

Post#1 » by Gant » Sun Dec 7, 2008 2:04 pm

1) Ubuntu

How do you say, "The bench sucks," in Swahili? I mean they don't (at all) but after the KG/Baby incident I'm just asking.

2) Rondo

I confess. Here on RealGM, I've been Rondobaiting. Is that immoral? It sort of sounds like it is.

I've been going to other boards and politely telling them Rondo's better than their guy. I know it's wrong, but Lord help me, I can't stop.

3) To the people who made fun of Mr. Davis:

I wrote this elsewhere (I'm trying to get up to 10 things quickly because I've got to go to work.):

"Yeah, real men don't show emotion! Real men go on RealGM and whine incessantly about the refs and Kevin Garnett's personality...

(That's why they call it "Real"GM.)"

4) Vecsey

Great line from Peter Vecsey in today's NY Post:

"AFTER visiting the Jose Conseco Fieldhouse tomorrow, the 19-2 Celtics invade our nation's capital Thursday. Given the way they're playing, David Stern has canceled the remainder of the season, called off the playoffs and ordered them to go straight to the White House."

5) Giddens and Walker:

Are playing better in the D-league than Gabe Pruitt ever did. Bill Walker could be contributing to the big squad now if there were adequate minutes for him.

6) Techs

I just read in the papers today that the Celtics lead the league by far in technical fouls. So let me ask you this whiny fans of other teams: If the refs are favoring the Celtics how come they keep T-ing the green guys up?

If anything the refs are mad at the Celtics.

7) Evening Out

Ray's improved because of health and Rondo. Rondo's improved dramatically. Perkins has improved. Garnett and Pierce have gotten some of the load taken off their shoulders. This is a five pronged trouble machine for other teams. The Celtics are really formidable now- even moreso than last year.

8) Big 4

Who's been not only the best point guard in the East but the best player on the Celtics the past few weeks? It's Rondo! Rondo has actually been more important to this team recently than Garnett, Pierce or Allen!!

If he maintains or improves on this level of play, it's the Quality Quartet, the Terrifying Tetrad, yes... The BIG FOUR.

9) O'Bryant

I'm very very patient in making judgements about young big men, but Patrick's not giving me anything to be positive about yet. I'm not giving up hope, but I'm looking for a reason here.

10) Streak

11 in a row. It must be frustrating for Cleveland and LA to win 9 out of 10 and lose ground.

Sunday morning coffee, the season's first snow and 10 things by Gant. Life is good.

Good points as usual, Gant. As for #8, I've come up with the "Tetralemma Dilemma", but on secong thought it's too much of a mouthful.

RE: for the bench. I'd really like to see Walker or Giddens get some burn early in the new year, but it doesn't look like there is space for our DL players to get much time unless there is an injury. I'm convinced that Danny will be bringing in some vet big again before the deadline. As for PG, it still doesn't seem that Gabe is quite ready for prime time. Could be Cassell after all.

Thanks again for a great post...... 8-)

#1 Hopefully it will make the bench tighter.
#5 Great news for the bench.
#6 We are the marked team.
The Celtics are cementing their position atop the NBA food chain with their brilliant record to start the season. They are also, however, furthering their image around the league as the chattiest team on the circuit. And word is the NBA office does, indeed, have the C’s in their sightline. According to one source, the steady stream of trash talk is getting a bit unseemly to some. Boston Herald
#8 I'd say maybe 4 1/2 ?
#9 I am hoping a second half serious contribution from POB
#10 That always makes my season.... 8-)

Being your first post, which either means you are under an alias or just some first timer who is not aware of the rules, so consider this a public warning. Don't come on our board and tell us what we can and cannot do and say we are crying. If you do, your stay will be quite short here on RealGM. Thank you.

Enough crying already! My god!

Thank you Shanobi. This is an excellent case study of the impulsed based postings of other fans alluded to in things #3 and #6. Great timing Shanobi, and you've got the tone down perfectly.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m NOT a Boston fan. Boston may still be the best team in the league! Cav’s and Laker's are right there!! we will see..

Good post Gant. Thanks for teeing up some convesration...

I'd like to make a comment on item #5. Yes, JR's and Walkers numbers look good and are beter than Pruitt's D League stats on offense, but I don't think they are being taught how to play our defense. Doc won't play any young guys unless they are on the same page defensively.

Utah lost 122 to 81 last night. I watched some of that game, and let me tell you even though they lost by 41 points, the game was not even that close. Should've been 50 pts or more.

I'd like to see the young guys get some PT, but they will be on ice until they show they can play in our defensive system and not miss their rotations.

I like both of these young guys, but I think it'll be next year before they will be ready to contribute anything substantial to the C's.

Tetralemma Dilemma <--- Sounds like something one would have to keep under wraps.

"Doc, I caught the Tetra lemma Dilemma? What do I do?"
"Don't worry son, we are gonna take real good care of you. You are going to need to visit our facility quiet frequently and, inasmuch, we here at the clinic have decided to let you pay in coupons and reward you with frequent flyer miles."

Gant, great read.

#2. Glen Davis

KG has to be careful in "yelling at Glen Davis." Baby is an overachiever, doing the best that he can with his 6' 7.75" frame, short arms, no vertical, no reliable shot (0.300 FG%), no post game, yet; the guy gets 17 mpg on a 19-2 team. Davis is giving all that he has, taking open shots (that I wish he wouldn't) when left wide open on the perimeter, and trying to fit in. He'd be great as the 3rd string C, but the Celtics don't have a second string C. Hopefully Mutombo will change that after the final Houston game on January 7. Write that date down on your calender, because I'm an optimist (who's hoping that Houston's chemistry problems and overall record leave Dikembe no choice but to sign with the Celtics - well, that and some prodding from Sam Cassell, David Falk, Doc Rivers and KG/Ray/Paul.)

#5. Giddens & Walker

I watched the first 10 minutes of the Utah Flash against the Bakersfield Jam yesterday, until the transmission seemed to go. Already, Giddens and Walker look like they have improved their shots from pre-season, but they are still far from classic. They are athletic and big compared to D-League wing players, Giddens pre-draft measurement was 6' 4" without shoes (1/2 inch taller than Tony Allen), Walker appears to be about the same, but not as quick as Giddens, which would mean that Walker has the height of an SG with the quickness of an SF. We will see how that plays out, but it's pretty clear that neither Giddens or Walker has anywhere near the handles of Tony Allen, so they don't appear to be a threat to take any PT away from Tony until they can score at the NBA level consistently. So, all that inside stuff they get will be challenged by NBA quick/tall PF's and C's, instead of D-League PF's and C's (who are too slow to slide over and challenge Giddens or Walker). So, it's not really any indication of how these drivers will fair against the big (and more importantly much quicker) boys.

#6. Technical Fouls

I think the team should just zip it and play like John Havlicek, let the ref do the talking, and pray that the favorable refereeing that they have been benefiting from (the Celtics get calls on their drives, and don't get whistled for touch fouls, and are protected from some rough stuff on their guards) doesn't stop, which I'm afraid that it might if they keep whining and the refs really turn on them.

#9. Patrick O'Bryant

Look, OB was a minimum salary signing, to develop the 22 year old to see if a future Tyson Chandler was underneath that skin. By now, though, the Celtics would have been able to ascertain things like basketball IQ, drive, determination, work ethic, desire and commitment to improve (such as OB's lower body strength, so he can take and keep position on the block and push other bigs out of position). I think that the Celtics (like Doc, Danny and Clifford Ray) will make a judgement if this guy is going to come around, or not.
If yes, he's stays thru next year, even if he doesn't help this year.
On the other hand, if they think he won't pan out, look for him to be in a trade.

Nice job, as usual Gant.

I would rather have Giddens and Walker on the bench than Davis and O'Bryant, no question.
It's still 17 to 11!!!!

Great post Gant! It's been a while since I've seen ten things. Must be tough when we have so little to complain about, huh? :D
