POLL: Diop for Cardinal?

Post#1 » by shrink » Mon Dec 8, 2008 3:39 pm

Diop Pro's: Defensive center. 7'0" 280 lb. Only 26. Contract size (MLE). We have no true center in 2009. Oak Hill Academy has been good to us before.

Diop Con's: Playing badly in DAL (EFF +6.6). Contract length. Cuts into 2010 money.

DAL may consider this deal because the length of Diop's deal is looking awfully scary right now,

2008-09 $5,585,000
2009-10 $6,031,800
2010-11 $6,478,600
2011-12 $6,925,400
2012-13 $7,372,200

Cardinal could fit in a 2010 rebuild, with Dirk on an ETO, and team options on Dampier and Josh Howard.

Diop is so overrated and so over paid. No thanks. Keep Card for his expiring value.

Cardinal's value next year, especially around deadline time, sky rockets. ~$6.5mil expiring to a team looking to cut salary when they actually have a chance at one of the big names? We can probably bring in some talent and further draft picks with it. We'll be able to get a lot better package than Diop.

I was big into wanting him over the off season but not at this price. If his contract was in the $3-4 million range, I would take him. As it stands, I agree with john2jer that Cardinal's contract is more valuable. Keep Cardinal and shoot for Thabeet in the draft.

Not for his contract. I still maintain we can find a player of similar caliber in the D-league for significantly less.

No waaaaaaaay.

First you convince me that we should trade Miller, and now you're saying we should take on Diop????

I'm guessing Shrink just picked this one off the trade board cause this does not seem like the Shrink I know.

Cardinal's contract will have positive value next year. I say we keep it until then unless we are getting an expiring now, in which case cap space next year would be more valuable than cardinal's expiring contract.

Diop has definately peaked it seems. After someone like him gets paid the way he did, I want to see continued results for awhile before we take him on. Jerome James anyone????

Thanks for voting, guys. Although we desperately need a center, I agree with the majority -- too much financial risk with a deal this long. I threw it up here because I was looking at other teams in 2010, and so many people mentioned Diop before the 2008 Free Agency. I'd keep Cardinal, or use him elsewhere.

And my next one won't be Jerome James. I'm looking at Etan Thomas.
