We need to do something about our bench

Post#1 » by cfan79 » Mon Dec 8, 2008 3:45 pm

I know this sounds crazy because we are 20 and 2, but we really need to do something about our bench. The only guys off the bench that can defend are Powe and Tony Allen. I don't like our backup center, small forward or point guard positions.

Baby is too short to stop bigger Centers and doesn't even stop small guys from driving in. O'bryant is even worse because he's got the height, but he looks like he isn't even trying out there.

Scala is a waste of space that I wish was being occupied by a tall small forward who doesn't look like a gym teacher.

House is a great shooter, but the league seems to know that if you apply any pressure to him he can barely bring the ball up.

we need to clear some space for players that will help us. Get rid of Scala, Pruitt, O'Bryant and turn Baby and House into 3rd stringers.

I would say the only guys I like on our bench are Powe, House, and Tony Allen. The rest of them bring little to nothing to the floor (although Scal hits some shots now and then). We need to dump Davis and Scal and POB for some quality, as well as bring in Giddens and Walker. I'd feel much better about our bench, then...

Yeah, but the problem with Scala is that he might cause us shots on the other side of the floor.

We need to do something about our back up SF and C spot. I think we are OK with Eddie at PG because we have Pruitt and Sam on the bench if he can`t deliver.

But Scal and Davis shouldn`t be playing. We need someone who can at least give us 10 minutes at SF, so Ray and Paul can get an extra 5 minutes rest in games. And Davis at center just doesn`t work. The problem is that POB is nowhere near ready. The guy needs 2-3 years of work with Clifford before he is ready to contribute. I have never seen a center so incapable of gaining post position on offense, he looks like a rag doll on the floor. No body strength whatsoever.

If we want to win again this season Danny needs to strengthen our team at these two positions. We really miss Posey and PJ not that our record reflect that but it can be noticed in games. Hopefully a few veterans get bought out, we could use a solid role player or two...

And what about his horrifically inexcusable foul ON THE INBOUNDS last night that cut our lead from 7 to 3 in 2.5 seconds? I would have benched his ass faster than you can say "BOO"...

I hoping the backup 3 spot will be eventually handled by JR and Walker. I'm not a fan of Scal as "Tony insurance" should he go down again but I imagine most teams don't have a great backup plan for their best perimeter defender either. In my mind, if we could have an active live body at center to rotate and block shots and rebound we'd be great. Obviously O'Bryant was not the correct choice but a player in his mold.

we are 20-2 but could easily be 22-0. we build a nice lead, then as soon as our bench goes in they give up the lead and put us behind the opposing team.

we are great team, but who doesn't want to be better. the lakers and cavs are very deep so we have to match their depth. and when it comes to a 7 game series, our starters would finish off the hard work that the bench has put in. We want to build a dynasty because the past few champs couldn't repeat and the way i see the league now, we need to be deeper. Killer instinct baby and grab that 2nd consecutive ring and the 18th banner!!!

I think Baby is being showcased (why he gets more mins than Powe). The way Reed was playing over Gomes a few years back.

Now if KG would just keep his mouth shut and not blow it - we will be able to trade Baby (with another player or two) for something useful.

I think it is Baby, Scal and one of TA, House, Giddens, Walker for someone we are not expecting.

the bench haven't lost a game for us, the blew the lead a few times, and actually turn things around in couple games.
The indiana and Denver games were poorly played by every player that stepped on the floor.

Our bench started playing really well before TA went down. I expect that to come back.

As for big Baby, I hope we do get a taller and more confident and experienced player. He is ok, but I doubt he will get a lot of minutes in the playoffs.

I'm not sure we were in love with our bench at this time last year either, it's a long season and Ainge will be planning what to do about fixing the weaknesses. He has a lot more trading chips than last year, and we've almost got a farm system with guys in development. I'm more comfortable now than last year, that Ainge can pull the trigger on some improvements.

I don't think it wrong of you to bring this up even though the team is 20-2. I don't like our bench and if we was to face the Lakers in the finals right now we could lose because we don't have a bench and they do. I still will take the Celtics starting five over the Lakers because I think Gasol, Ram and Bynum are soft. Yes I said Bynum is soft. But that being said we need to sure up our bench. I don't see why Giddins or Walker can't be called up and have them play some of those minutes Scal and Big Baby seems to get. Really how bad can those two be compared to Scal and Big Baby????????? As for back-up Center I really think Mo Mourning would be a good fit for us. I'm not worried about the back-up PG position because we did just fine with this same group last season. But we took a hit when we lost Posey and PJ and we haven't filled their roles yet.

I think this will be an ongoing concern so long as we're winning with 3 max-contract superstars- if our bench players get too good, they get too paid- & then there's financial trouble. We'll add one or two bought-out vets at the deadline and could make a couple of small trades, but it's sort of like re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, if the Titanic were a championship basketball team - we're going to be good pretty much no matter what imperfect combination of bench players we have.

Id like to get Warrick. I think Tinsley and Williams could help the team but both are known knuckleheads.

Yeah, I'd probably pass on Tinsley and Sean Williams and lean towards picking up a veteran or two that doesn't wet his pants or complain about minutes.

WE have Powe,TA,House and thats about it that I like coming off the bench. We need a 5 and thats it. BBD is doing ok a the 5 spot. He only need to play about 12 minutes a game. So we dont need any all star back ups.

The guy I like that no one else does is Steven Hunter. 7' can block shots and rebound.

Return to Boston Celtics
