2:02pm: Tom Krasovic says the Padres are not seeking J.A. Happ or Chris Coste as has been previously rumored. Also, Ronny Cedeno is not the Padres' first choice to replace Khalil Greene at short. Krasovic adds that the Braves apparently are now happy the Padres didn't take their offer for Peavy.

Kras adds that the Padres did some fact-finding with Mark Grudzielanek's agent. Grudz wants to play for a winner though.

1:10pm: Roman Modrowski of the Chicago Sun-Times says Peavy sang "Go Cubs, Go" at a Vegas bar last night. Good times. But did Roy Oswalt sing along? Also, Modrowski believes the Cubs would be willing to eat as much as $6MM of Marquis' $9.875MM.

Jayson Stark says an Aaron Heilman-Marquis deal appears unlikely, as the sides cannot agree on what portion of Marquis' contract the Cubs would assume.

2:25pm: The saga continues...Kevin Towers does not think this deal lost steam in the last 24 hours, according to Yahoo's Tim Brown and Gordon Edes. However, they say the Cubs are having second thoughts about this four-team mess. The Cubs source says the price is too steep for them right now and they're looking at another short-term option for the rotation (Randy Johnson maybe).

You got to be effing kidding me. If we take Randy Johnson or anyone over Peavy Cubs fans will hang him. Im fine with not getting Peavy just donts have us sitting around for 2 months thinking we are going to get him and that we are very serious about winning.

I have come to the reality that with or without Peavy we arent going to win the WS. Not with Z, Derrek Lee and Soriano as some of your supposed clutch players.

Updating a previous entry, the Indians now appear close to landing right-handed closer Kerry Wood with a two-year contract.

The club's offer to Wood might include an option for a third year, though that could not immediately be confirmed. But a source said the deal is gaining momentum and could be completed quickly. Financial terms were not immediately available, and Wood's agent, Pat Rooney, was not immediately available to comment.

The Indians met with Rooney at the Bellagio on Monday and stepped up their efforts to land the 31-year-old Wood.

Wood went 5-4 with a 3.26 ERA and 34 saves in 65 appearances for the Cubs last season. He struck out 84 batters and walked 18 in 66 1/3 innings. Wood has a long history of arm troubles that subsided when the Cubs moved him to the bullpen permanently in 2007.

If the Indians sign Wood, they would move youngster Jensen Lewis, who saved 13 games down the stretch in '08, back to a setup role.

–A crazy rumor making the rounds at the Bellagio in Las Vegas is that the Cubs would entertain the idea of possibly trading right-hander Carlos Zambrano in a blockbuster if, as expected, they acquire Padres ace Jake Peavy.

Doesnt he have a no trade clause?

ESPN said that K-Rod will sign with the mets for 3/37, which is lower than what was projected. It's a "bargain" for him, but that's still too much for any reliever.

Bruce Levine was just on ESPN, he said he thinks the Peavy deal will get done. When this happens no one knows.

He also said the Cubs are the front runners for Bradley, and that the Cubs would look for a 2-3 year deal for 7-10 million per year. Health is a concern and if he could play RF adequately.

This team should have made it the the NLCS. They weren't in the proper state of mind. If Hendry makes these deals the Cubs will undoubtedly be improved, but you just hope this translates to success in the playoffs.

• Kerry Wood appears to be headed to either Cleveland or Texas, likely for two years and $12 million-$14 million.

If that isnt per yr you have to be kidding me Jimbo. I would rather keep Wood at 7mil per then Gregg.

If Wood wasn't let go for financial reasons then I will never quite know the real reason. It just doesn't make sense.

MLBTR:

7:26pm: Brock talked to Towers, who met today with Hendry and said a trade seems more likely today than it did yesterday. They'll meet again tonight. If a deal is reached, it'd be announced after Thursday's Rule 5 draft. Brock says the Phillies are believed to be the third team.

I've read Thursday in a few articles. It makes sense since there seems to be some hesitation right now from the Cubs on the certain players involved.
