It didn't taste that much. Really wasn't that big a deal.

The crickets tasted like sesame oil. They were crunchy. It also had a hint of pan fried cod roe flavor, if you've ever had it, but not nearly as delicious.

The scorpion was served on a shrimp toast. I took it off the toast and ate it by itself, to get a better idea of it's pure flavor. I accidentally cut off the brittle tail with my chop sticks, so I ate the head and body first. It didn't have as much of a flavor as I had thought, but a nutty, decent taste. The tail tasted different. It had faint traces of a rancid flavor. Judging by the taste of the tail, you can kind of get a hunch how poisonous it must have been alive. The tail was very crunchy, which was actually nice.

The frog legs were OK. Like chicken but more tender and with a slight hint of game-ish/wild kick. They were grilled, and served with a cilantro/mint chutney sauce which was very good.

Why? Like my buddy said, if it's on the menu, someone obviously likes it. I decided to try it. If I do something, I always have to do it all the way. Well, in this case that's actually not entirely true. I passed on the Thai sea worms and the roasted ants. It was fun.

I would recommend trying it. Not for culinary reasons but because I feel like it expanded my horizon a bit.

Hmm.. Sophie's World looks like an interesting read. I haven't really read a book that I've been impressed by for quite a while now. I need book suggestions for all the flying around the country I'm going to suffer through over the next 2 months.

Hey miles, I'm going to be in NYC tomorrow night (arriving at Penn station). Someone told me that's near Ktown? Any suggestions for restaruants? Thanks dude.

Sure...you mean korean restaurants or any restaurants in the city? You going with a girl, by yourself, or with some friends?

Kum Kang San is probably one of the most popular places on 32nd...nice place, good spot to take a date, pricey, decent food.

Kun Jip is also popular, but not as nice as kum kang san. Food is decent.

New york kom tang, for one of the best BBQ options - they use wood charcoal instead of the usual gas - this is similar to Soot Bull Jeep on Catalina in L.A. - my favorite korean BBQ ever so far.

Seoul Garden for Soondubu (sp?)

For late night, I usually to go Kang Suh (for meat) and Han Bat (for beef stew and fried rice) decent places to go after partying (hopefully not in Murray Hill!)

These are all a couple blocks east of Penn station.

There are some funky, Americanized, hipper korean restaurants downtown, I see plenty of them in the village where I live, but I've never been there.

Most people will tell you there's better korean food in jersey (fort lee) or flushing...which may be true, but when I'm jonesying for the best korean food, I just go to my parents' in jersey.

I know the some of the best pizza joints, best italian, best indian, best hotdogs, whatever...let me know and I'll give you my 2 cents.

How long are you going to be in the city, what are you going to be doing? Have time to hang out?

Hey, thanks for the suggestions. I ended up hitting this ramen place near the east village called Ramen Setagaya (IIRC). Wasn't too bad but nothing spectacular. I'm on the interview trail right now and I was checking out NYU on Saturday. I had to head back to boston for another interview but I'll be back in NYC on wednesday again. Got 3 more upcoming in Manhattan (NYEEI, Sinai, and the Cornell/Columbia combined program).

I would seriously love to just chill out and grab dinner with a fellow realgmer, but these programs have us constantly wining and dining with their residents (its essentially like an extra 2 hour "casual" interview).

I have to say though... I'm seriously digging NYC. Now that prospect of going back to LA is actually right at my fingertips I'm starting to have second thoughts about it. I guess we'll see.... Manhattan sure is tempting though... =P

I'm probably going to be hitting up NYC more often in the upcoming months (after interview season is over) so definitely man, we gotta meet up next time I'm there. I'll keep you updated the next time I'm in town for something non-career related.

Korean food really shines in it's barbecue, at least for me. I always hit up Soot Bull Jeep when I'm in L.A., just be aware that you will walk out smelling like barbecue.

Ippudo a few blocks east is better, my personal fav for japanese noodles. Kind of a swanky ambiance too, good cheap date place.

no worries, next time...nyc is pretty much the best place to hang out. Nothing can compare to the beach, laid back greatness that is L.A., but NY definitely has it beat in terms of convenience and variety.

When I miss a little of the sunshine, I just chat up with ex-angelinos next door who run a mexican restaurant named after a famous L.A. gang. Only downside is that it's more tex-mex than authentic, but it's LA style texmex, so that's aite.
