I've seen a couple different sites and sources mention about the same thing. What it appears is:

-Padres want to do the deal after the Rule 5 draft as they would have to shuffle their 40 man roster with some of the players coming in on a Peavy deal.

-Cubs are pretty close, but are in the process of moving Marquis and DeRosa first. A few teams mentioned and Hendry probably seeing who will pay more of Marquis salary before making a final deal. DeRosa to the Phillies the most likely.

-Deal would be announced Thursday at earliest, likely Friday or Saturday.

Haven't heard anything about Bradley besides Levine's report.

Also heard Fuku likely to see time in CF, probably platoon with Johnson.

So for righty/lefty balance maybe:

SS-Theriot-R
2B-Fontenot-L
1B-Lee-R
3B Ramirez-R
RF-Bradley-L
LF-Soriano-R
C-Soto-R
CF-Fukudome-L

or
Fontenot
Lee
Bradley
Ramierez
Soriano
Soto
Fukdome
Theriot

Just guessing.

Zambrano, Peavy, Lilly, Harden, Dempster...........wow.

Jake Peavy deal waits on Cubs decision
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/ba ... 3272.story
LAS VEGAS - While general manager Jim Hendry said he spoke to representatives of three or four free agents Tuesday on the second day of baseball's winter meetings, the Jake Peavy rumors continue to take center stage.

Hendry declined to comment on talk that Mark DeRosa was headed to Philadelphia for pitching prospects that would be sent to San Diego to complete a potential Peavy deal, but Phillies sources insisted a deal was in place and ready to go if the Cubs decide to pull the trigger with the Padres.

Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney said the team can afford to add a lucrative long-term contract even without knowing exactly who the new owner will be, which suggests Peavy's $63 million contract is within the projected budgets that already have been presented to the bidders.

"We think within the budget we have, we have enough room to do most of the things we need to do," Kenney said.

I wonder what part of the deal could be holding the Cubs back. Josh Vitters hasn't been mentioned much as of late which may mean he isn't part of the deal, which would be great.

Also, the economic state is really affecting these contract offers. The Cubs could possibly sign Bradley for under 10 million. That's crazy.

If we got through this deal without giving up Vitters I would call it a steal.

I dont know what it is either, we want this right? It was always believed that San Diego was holding it up now its the Cubs.

Get Peavy...check.
Shred salary...check.
Get Fontenot more ABs...check.

I dont see what the hold up is.

Essentially compared to last yrs team we are...

Trading Wood for Peavy...thats a plus.
Trading DeRo for Bradley...if healthy thats a plus.

We cant rely on DeRo having the same kind of yr batting. I love Derosa, by far my favorite Cub right now, but he has the most value in ratio to a reasonable contract. His ability to play the infield will be missed, not so much his outfield.

We still need:

Utility bench guy
Professional Hitter
back up catcher
Lefty reliever
Long relief...maybe.

Former Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood agrees to deal with Cleveland Indians
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/ba ... 1698.story
LAS VEGAS — With two teams to pick from in the American League Central, Kerry Wood appears to have rejected overtures from Detroit to take a deal with Cleveland.

Wood's decision to sign with the Indians followed closely Francisco Rodriguez's agreement with the New York Mets. Rodriguez's three-year deal, which is expected to be announced after he passes a physical, narrowed down Wood's choices.

The deal is believed to be two years with a vesting option for a third. Money terms remain unclear.

Wood fills a hole Cleveland has had at the back of its bullpen since the breakdown of Joe Borowski, a former teammate of Wood's with the Cubs. It allows Jensen Lewis to remain in a set-up role.

11:07pm: Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune has Phillies sources saying the deal is in place if the Cubs will pull the trigger with the Padres. Sullivan also talked to chairman Crane Kenney, who implied the Cubs included Peavy's contract within projected budgets to bidders.

Sullivan adds that the Cubs have not had talks for Bobby Abreu yet.

So much for ESPNs inside info. Straight from the Chairmans mouth. Whats the effin hold up?

Milton Bradley-DH-Rangers Dec. 10 - 1:01 am et

The Chicago Tribune believes the Cubs could be closing in on a deal with free agent Milton Bradley.

The Cubs must have seen favorable reports on Bradley's knee to consider signing him when Raul Ibanez, Bobby Abreu and others are still available. The Tribune reports that Abreu is interested in playing for the Cubs, but that no talks have taken place.

Source: Chicago Tribune

If the Cubs get their right fielder, then I think a Peavy deal will get done. If the Phillies are the 3rd team involved then DeRosa may be part of the deal as earlier reports have indicated.

Just reported this morning...

Padres are interested in Marquis. SD is thoroughly researching Marquis, pitching tendencies, off field character, family life, etc. Bruce reports, Padre scouts have called him to ask questions about Marquis.

Also, SD will only accept Marquis if the Cubs are willing to pay partial salary.

I think this is good. Shows that SD really wants the deal done if they are bending like this..I actually think its easier to pay partial salary than try to trade him. Plus, as reported by sheik, the sale is being shopped with Peavy's figures.. that outta tell you something!

OMG OMG OMG.. I just nut my pants

Peavy
Zambrano
Dempster
Harden
Lilly

WOWOWOWOWOW 3 of those guys have potential to be the BEST pitcher in the league... and thats not homerism or delussional thoughts.

I'm not going to get excited until anything is made official. But getting Peavy and Bradley would really be the perfect pitcher/hitter combo to add this offseason. Obviously I'm in favour of trading DeRosa from my past threads. If we could do all this without losing Vitters, I'll never say a negative thing about Hendry again.

And really, we should be able to complete a deal now without Vitters if some of these rumours pan out. If we deal DeRosa for a pitching prospect or two to Philly, send Pie to Baltimore for another young pitcher, we can offer a lot of cheap, major-league ready pitching. That's what they want.

Garret Olson (Pie deal), J.A. Happ (DeRosa deal), Sean Marshall, Ronny Cedeno and a non-Vitters prospect (Atkins or Castillo maybe) should be enough to get it done at this point. Your getting four guys capable of starting while making almost nothing. It's a solid return when the Cubs are your only real trading partner.

SD wants the Cubs to pay for Peavy's partial salary, not Marquis.

Vitters is rumored to be going to the Padres.

And YUP! Get rid of Marquis while getting back Peavy.

The Report per AM1000:

Jason Marquis, Jason Hart, Josh Vitters - Padres
Mark DeRosa - Phils

and of course, we get Peavy.

Was hoping we wouldn't have to give up Vitters...

Are the Phils not giving up anything or did you just leave out the prospects

Happ is definitely going to SD. God I hope its not Jason Hart...he is the worst backup PG in the NBA.

If we do this deal without giving up Marshall thats more amazing then not giving Vitters up.

Yeah.. not giving up Marshall is key.

That gives us options

1)Keep him, another arm never hurts
2)Replenish the farm, he could probably get back very young prospects, a couple
3)Package him up, let him make spot starts, relieve appearances, then bundle him up with other players to make that mid season trade..who isn't looking for an arm mid-season!?

Oh man, the Cubbie hype machine has us all riled up again.

If we got Peavy, Marshall would only pitch middle relief although he's good in that role I'm not sure I value him any higher than Vitters

Return to Chicago Cubs
