Source: Yankees trade Cabrera for Cameron

Post#1 » by VirginiaKnickFan » Thu Dec 11, 2008 11:19 am

The Yankees have found their center fielder for 2009, as they are set to send Melky Cabrera to Milwaukee for veteran outfielder Mike Cameron on Thursday, according to two major league sources.

The Yankees have been saying that Cabrera and Brett Gardner would compete for the center field job, but the acquisition of Cameron gives them a veteran presence at the position.

Many believed Cabrera would be the center fielder of the future entering the 2008 campaign, but a disappointing season, in which he hit .249 with eight homeruns and 37 RBIs in 129 games, led many to believe he was destined for a future as a utility outfielder. Yankees blue-chip prospect Austin Jackson is not expected to be ready for big league action until at least 2010, making Cameron the ideal one-year stopgap in center field.

Yankees must be thinking that Austin Jackson really is a legit stud prospect and ready to challenge next year, in which case Cameron is here for 1-2 years max.

brewers fan here? whats the deal on Cabrera? did you guys like him?

Cameron will give you solid defense day in and day out, and hit about .250? strikes out alot, but will sneak up with homerun totals. i think he had 25 last year? came up with some clutch hits at the end of last season too. when he gets hot, hes HOT.

He has great plate patience and will hit a good amount of HRs.... not to mention he is a terrific CFer.

A definite upgrade over your boy Melky.

As for Melky, we initially had high hopes for him. He got off to a terrific start in April last year, but he fell off the map after that. I personally think he's destined to be a career minor league. The dude cannot drive a ball to save his life. He does have a very strong arm and is a good centerfielder though.

Just what we need, a stikeout artist. First Swisser and now Cameron. Can't we bring in a few hitters that can hit above .290 ?

This is not a done deal yet. The yankees are interested in Having Bill Hall sent along with Cameron.

Hmm seems as if Cash is going all out to get all of CC's friends- First Swisher, now Cameron and maybe Hall...

I am not a fan of this trade. I hear what you are saying, but cameron is done, and pretty much a stiff.. would have rather kept melky and platooned him with gardner for just 1 year.

Should this deal go down and nothing else happens...

LF-Damon
CF-Cameron
RF-Nady
DH-Matsui (he really shouldn't be fielding anymore)

Gardner is the 4th outfielder while Swisher primarily plays first.

I like this deal if it goes down. Cameron is solid both offensively and defensively, and his contract is up at year's end, leaving the gate wide open for Jackson. And whatever upside Melky has is expendable at this point. Not sure what Cashman wants Bill Hall for unless he has a Cano deal on the table or something. If he just wants a utility backup, I don't see what's so bad about getting Nick Punto or something.

I don't think it's done yet but I don't really mind it. Platoon Gardner and Cameron in CF for well above average defense. Good OBP with both guys. Very good speed with Gardner and a little more pop with Cameron.

I'd rather see them swap Kennedy to the Royals for DeJesus. Better player, younger and you can move him over to LF to replace Damon next year with Jackson in CF. -Jitpal

Hope this trade doesn't go thru... I prefer to keep melky and use the money we would have used on cameron on manny instead..

Doug Melvin is "moving on" from this deal. I think he is just trying to scare the Yankees. If we do get Manny then it means another year of Damon in center :nonono:

I hope this trade doesn't go down because it'll be too much fun to watch Manny, Damon and Nady play the OF all season.

There's no defense there. We need a Center fielder that can play defense. Maybe Melky can get better offensively and then we can just keep him.
