Collins for Barbosa

what do you think, with the Suns now committing 12.2, 13.3, 14.4 million over the next 3 years to Jason Richardson, a 38 mpg starting SG, I can't imagine they'd want to be paying the 6.1, 6.6, 7.1 million to Barbosa over the same period as a backup. Hill and Tucker and maybe Barnes could take care of the backup SG minutes, and Dudley can play big minutes at SF.

Could Minnesota swoop in and take advantage of their financial situation and offer Collins' expiring for Barbosa? I think they'd have a use for Collins too as another big body as Lopez is not ready for playoff basketball yet.

I'd even throw in a late 1st, but since they hate those, maybe we could give them some cold hard cash instead. Like a suitcase of 3 million in unmarked bills or something.

As much as I would love to have barbs here I don't think they are letting go of him as that leaves them solely with Dragic as a backup. Lets not forget how injury prone Richardson is.

I know talent-wise it doesn't work, but financially, the Suns are going to pay 7 million to Barbosa to either play 15-20 minutes behind J-Rich and Nash? Financially, it doesn't add up.

If they want another guard, the trade also works to add Ollie. Collins/Ollie for Barbosa.

And if they want some SG depth and don't think Tucker is ready, Collins/McCants OR Carney/Ollie for Barbosa/Tucker works, with either variation of McCants and Carney.

And don't the Suns HAVE to do something? As far as I know, they're at 12 players and the minimum is 13.

1. As long as they have Shaq, I don't see them dumping quality players for nothing. The trade for Richardson means Kerr is still going for it this year and next.

2. Even if they wanted to get rid of Barbosa, which I sincerely doubt, you have to remember we would be bidding against 28 other teams. Hence, it's going to take more than an expiring contract.

I've never liked Barbosa and think he's completely a product of the system, which I think is being proven this year. He's a faster, smaller Rashad McCants, who doesn't have the stroke of RMC. he's clearly an upgrade over Collins, but it's trading our lone 7 footer for a mighty midget who'd come off the bench. When we're at full strength, he hurts Foye's development. But maybe it can be expanded to further the cash savings for Phoenix, balance them more, and help in their impending rebuilding process, and in the mean time bring in more chips for the Wolves.

Phoenix out: Barbosa, Lopez, Amundson, Tucker and the better of their three 2nd round picks
Minnesota out: McCants, Collins, Telfair, and Utah's 1st

Wolves - Wolves get a dynamic scorer off the bench, a rookie 7 footer who'd fit with the age of the team, and a couple of fillers. Lopez would get minutes here as there's no one in front of him, no worries if he makes mistakes as this is clearly a development year, and he brings defense, rebounding, and hustle to a front court that lacks it. 2nd round pick becomes a player who can be stashed overseas, or combined to move up int he 2nd round. Barbosa is the only one that affects 2010, but not that bad.

PF - Jefferson/Smith/Madsen
SF - Gomes/Carney/Amundson
SG - Miller/(Brewer)/Tucker
PG - Foye/Barbosa/Ollie

Suns - The bring in more half-court type of players who'd fit better with Porter's system. They're lacking at back-up point guard now, and Telfair fills that role. Contracts are all expiring, or Telfair's good deal. The Utah pick might not be used until 2010 unless Utah gets healthy and improves, so it fits with Phoenix's impending rebuilding plan better. Saves them a bit of cash next year.

I don't think Barbosa is the kind of guy that draws a bidding war from 29 teams. At 7 million annual per for a 6'3 SG in a bad economy, only teams with huge holes at SG can really say that he's a great investment.

I think Barbosa is gonna get shopped and I don't think there's gonna be huge offers for him. If Barbosa was a free agent after this season, he'd probably get like 4, maybe 5 mil a year. Definitely not 7. Thinking from a Phx FO point of view, they need to watch their budget and get some defense, because they gave up their 2 best defenders for J-Rich. Ollie/Collins makes sense, and I don't think I'm being a MN homer. I think we'd have Phoenix's attention. We might have to make some minor tweaks.

I think you guys are completely underrating him.

Barbosa's career shooting percentages: .467/.403/.802

In comparison, Kevin Martin's career shooting percentages: .463/.376/.845

Also, Ben Gordon's: .433/.413/.859

And to boot, Barbosa can play the point.

Granted, barbosa has started slow this year, as have the entire Phoenix Suns, but he has been warming up lately. Here are his umbers form his last three games:

I agree that he is a product of the system to a degree-- in that he benefits playing a faster pace in order to utilize his blazing speed, however the same could be said for any quick player. Bringing him here is surely not going to help his game any though. In any regard, if the Suns want to move him D'antoni will jump on it.

And D'Anton has Malik Rose's EXP and Nasty Nate to offer, though they likely would HAVE to find a suitor for Curry since Barbosa's contract runs past 2010.
