Just from watching him, I'm pretty sure he's not getting anywhere near as much lift from his legs (probably related to the sore knee) on those shots in particular. He hasn't been able to play much, so I imagine the coaches have been on his ass about those free throws, and its showing. He's much more confident at the line. Plus, I imagine he's bought into the idea and is perhaps even a bit competitive with all his teammates who have all clearly stepped it up this season at the line as a group.
As for the 3 pointers...I have absolutely no idea. At this point, I am just thinking aberration. The guy has never in his career shot even close to 40% on 3s, and he's hitting over 42% so far this season...I don't expect it to last.
Back to the midrange stuff...he's clanking consistently short on those shots...I think it's a knee/practice thing.

He once shot 38% from 3 in Orlando on a lot of attempts.
He doesn't jump as high on his 3's , that what he said he noticed he did in Orlando , it provides more balance and better arc on his shot.
I think he can be a 35% shooter at the end of the year.
“He didn’t miss?” , “That’s fantastic. That’s tremendous. I wish I could have a day like that. I dream of the day I could go 12-for-12.”-Rafer Alston

That Orlando season was epic, once in a lifetime type of thing for a player like McGrady that likes to jack up a lot of shots from outside. This year though, hes kept it calm, that's why you see his 3 pt shooting percentage is so much higher, plus he makes at least 1 or a little over 1 game not bad. Lets just hope he keeps it up, one of the main reasons is because when things aren't going his way, hes known to jack up tons of shots.
This mid range game isn't all that bad, last night he started chucking at the end of the game, which was one of the reasons he only shot like 40% lol, but he did a great job of GETTING TO THE LINE, and most importantly, HES MAKING 80% OF THEM!!!

Another theory...he is able to step into his 3 pointers, which gives him a bit more force on those shots. Most of the time when he shoots those mid range jumpers, he's working off an iso or coming off a pick and he can't step into the shot. His knee is sore, and so he's not jumping high enough and is consistently short.
But the 3s are fine because he almost always is able to step into the shot off a drive and kick.

His mid range game? he starts to chuck when things aren't going good for him. Example : game against Clippers.
