Time to Begin Starting Mr. Anderson

Post#1 » by vincecarter4pres » Tue Dec 16, 2008 2:43 am

I think it might be time to at least entertain the thought of starting Ryan Anderson.
You could pull Simmons or Yi and start him at the 3 or the 4.
If you pull Yi, I am not saing you stop giving Yi minutes, he must develop as well, but maybe it's time to think about the potential Anderson has as well.
I could go on with my reasoning , but instead, discuss.........

I like Ryan coming off the bench on of him Dooling and Hayes ( get well soon Jarvis ) are allways reliable to get us something off the bench . I personally think Yi will play alot worse coming off the bench , his confidecence will sink even more.

Eh...one great game after a horrible-average stretch of games. I agree with Serpo here.

A little too soon for me. I like him coming off the bench would like to see him 10-15 points every night. Then maybe I'd reconsider. Simmons and Yi need to contribut a bit more. how about throwing rag... ah sorry swift in there with Hayes (when healthy) just to keep some players on there toes and so that complacency doesn't set in for some.
Anyways just thinkin out loud is all.

I like him coming off the bench too. We need a guy who can shoot and spread the floor and play hard along with Dooling and Hayes on the 2nd unit. I think right now he fits in nicely there.

But like Rich said too, one great game after a long stretch of "ok" games. I'm all for moving Bobby out of the starting line up if someone earned it, but also gotta remember how awful our 2nd unit would be if Bobby was put there and Ryan was inserted into the starting line up. Lets see the play continue before we make a decision.

I agree with this..

I don't see much of a difference in Anderson and Yi..they're both streaky players that don't offer much outside of scoring..neither guy is anything special when they aren't making their shots..

I hate Yi though, I can't stand him..but benching him would probably kill his confidence, like Serpo said..he seems like a guy that can get down on himself easily..

Well Anderson is probably better than Yi in the sense that he's more willing to mix-it-up and always plays with energy... I mean he'll take the ball down low and try to finish but there were a couple of plays today where his average athleticism came back to haunt him...

It's probably still worth trying to develop Yi right now though...

If we swapped Anderson for Simmons than our D would be even worse than it is already.

I too think that Anderson should stay on the bench. As much as Yi and Simmons are inconsistant, I prefer playing Anderson more minutes off the bench then starting him.

Yi is sensitive. I did notice something the other day in that f'n blowout. When Yi is the main option he is more agressive. When Harris and VC were on the bench, Yi was taking it to the basket.

Maybe Frank needs to look at those tapes. Yi in the second unit with Dooling, Hayes, Yi, Anderson, Boone or Dooling, Harris, Hayes, Yi, Boone. In the first lineup, don't know who defends the 3 but this is balanced.

As for Simmons, Clearly he is only a spot up shooter. The guy is no joke along the baselines. So no dribble drives with him. Just let him spot up. Now does that merit a starting job. IMO not really. I would rather Hayes start, Simmons come off the bench and have CDR(when healthy) get more or SImmons minutes off the bench.

I'm for anything that will take Yi and Simmons out of the starting lineup!

Anderson has earned his role, but Yi should still start.

feel fortunate we have a rookie role player who can go for 21 and 9...he's been spotty...but he does mix it up on both sides of the floor...Hayes needs to start when healthy...Bobby seems to be limited to how many corner jumpers he can make...he's def. rebounding has been above avg...but he's a dud, I think a lot of us were hoping more out this guy, but he's becoming an inconsistent NBA player overall...and chalk that up to whatever...

Mr Anderson, as said before, cooled off for awhile and is far from being a defensive player at the 3 spot we need...but the effort he leaves on the court is present whether putting up numbers or not...he is a rook and he's learning what he can and cant do...Boki x2

which brings me to Yi...cant figure him out, well get used to it...I think he's still trying to figure out the NBA and the Nets himself...I'm far from giving up on this guy, (I was really opposed to him coming here when the trade went down), but I'm all for him starting and giving him a couple of years to progress...things could be worse Nets fans...

I agree that it's definitely time to at least explore the thought of having Anderson begin over Yi. I think that Ryan brings more of an immediate presence in the game then Yi does, and I think that Anderson and Lopez work very well together. Anderson is a more consistent shooter then Yi is; he tends to get less minutes then Yi, so most observers fail to realize how potent Anderson probably would be if he had more minutes per game. Most shooters need time to establish rhythm in their jump shots and Ryan is definitely one of those guys. But unlike Yi, Ryan has a much smoother stroke and has developed surprising confidence. I also think that Yi would benefit from coming off the bench. He'd more then likely be playing against the opposing teams bench members, so he may get better looks in the offensive end against typically worse defenders coming off the bench. I think consistency is going to be the most puzzling part of Yi's game for years to come.

Frequently, Anderson does look more comfortable in the game than Yi. He has a knack for being in the right place for the rebound or steal. I thought he would have better averages per minute than Yi. But when I adjust their statistics per 26.4 minutes per game (which is Yi's average minutes), their statistics are surprisingly similar.

Yi Anderson
FG% 0.410 0.409
3pt% 0.406 0.397

Below are all per 26.4min
Pt/26.4min 10.40 10.89
Rebound 6.20 5.67
Assists 1.20 0.75
Steals 0.36 0.64
Blocks 0.68 0.33
TOs 1.40 1.30

Anderson no longer shows up in 82games statistics, but the last time he appeared which was Dec 11 (again, Yi, Anderson):

%3pt attempt 29% 43%
%2pt attempt 46% 20%
%2pt blocked 1% 31%(not a typo)
%Inside attempt 23% vs 36%
%inside blocked 20% 23%

You see, most statistics are very similar, Yi has more assists, blocks, Anderson has more steals. (Yi has slightly more rebounds per minute although Anderson often seemed to be right there for the rebounds.)

Anderson uses the 3pt more and goes inside more, but he's blocked more in the inside and much, much more in the 2pt range.

Now Yi is a sophomore in the NBA and has some internatioanl competition experience (although he is used mainly for rebounding - being one of the leading rebounders in the Olympics - and defense but is an after thought in his team's offense), but Anderson has been playing American-caliber basketball much longer than Yi. So that also kind of even out.

Then it is a matter of who you think having more upside and who is a higher priority to develop. Everyone will have his own opinion.

If Anderson is "mixing it up" defensively, why is his blocks + steals to turnover ratio negative? Mr. Swift has never done that his entire career when he's been given a chance to play. When you see that, it can be the sign of a really terrible defensive player. I thought he was going to be better defensively based on what I saw in the preseason... Looking at his photos on yahoo and his anemic block totals I'm seeing some evidence of statue defense (no effort, hands raised straight up) rather than being someone who plays agressive and is truly mixing it up defensively.

Offensively, his production has been woefully inconsistent. As JJ pointed out, Anderson has been spotty.

In 17 minutes per game he's averaged 7.2 points. That's certainly no better than what Mr. Swift has done throughout his career, and Mr. Swift probably isn't respected by most of you guys as being a good offensive player at all (even though he is)

yep...Stromile Swift does it again...

(fyi, your forgetting our talk...in regards to any player and how certain intangilbles, especially on the defensive end, dont show up in box scores/statisitics...)

Mr Anderson has held his own on the defensive end and has mixed it up with the best of them, getting in a little scrum under the basket vs the Heat that lead to an easy Lopez bucket (not shown in the box score, unless it was credited as an asst...it should be noted, despite an off shooting night, Ryan did have 7 rebs 2 asts and 2 block shots and at least altering 1 other shot...L. Frank always stresses this, which is a huge point...when your shot is not falling, pick up your game in other areas that can obviously help the team, and Ryan definitely does this)...For a rookie, he's aggressive and fearless...took a beautiful charge vs Miami along the baseline (again not showin in the box score)...but we all know he's in the game for offensve, as a long range shooter...he's streches the floor for us, while moving the ball adequately rarely forcing shots...and we need him to be a little more consistent with his shot...

W/ Boone back adding some toughness inside and Trenton receiving more minutes for his defense, the rotation looks to be set again...just gotta keep Jarvis healthy, he brings a lot to our second unit, hopefully getting a chance start down the line...
