If We're Knocked Out...

Post#1 » by Chewie » Tue Dec 16, 2008 5:33 am

It's not the Bears style but when and if we're knocked out of this, there are certain players I'd like to see more of at least for the final game :

Chris Williams - would be nice to know if our 1st rd pick can play a lick. If this was going to be his fate, I'm not sure why we just didn't put him on IR and give him the Lovie red-shirt treatment.
Earl Bennett - when your 3rd rd pick can't sniff the field except on special teams on a team that's devoid at talent at the position, that's a bad sign.
Kellen Davis - preseason stud blocked by Dez and Olsen. Given Clark's going to be 32 by next season's start, it would be nice to see Davis get some looks.
Craig Steltz - 4th rd rookie has seen some spot duty at safety but mostly plays on special teams. I doubt he's the rangy safety we need but get him out there.

I would like to see Williams, Bennett and Davis. Id also like to see Jamar get some time over Hunter.

Seems like Nick Roach is getting more of the reps at Hunter's spot these days so it looks like he moved over Jamar Williams on the depth chart. I know I read where Williams is frustrated he didn't get the nod.

Not seeing Earl Bennett makes absolutely no sense especially is the reports about the team souring on Lloyd are true. Rasheid Davis drops everything in sight and Booker has been hobbled by injuries lately, so it's really inexplicable how Bennett hasn't even been given a chance.

The rest, Cliff Levingston can do without, although it'd be nice to see if Williams can play some LT since St. Clair is probably a goner next season anyway.

Its almost like the Bears have a redshirt policy with some of these guys. Last year Beekamn this year Bennett. Beekman goes from not getting on the field bust to full time starter in PRESEASON. When does that happen? And are they planning the same for Bennett?

Part of the problem with the Bears is that they never take chances and give guys and opportunity to play in a live game. They'll base their perceptions on practice time. That's until the starters all get injured and they are finally forced to go with the other guys. Why not mix it up and give these guys a shot for a play or two?

I'm absolutely with you on this - that's why I prefaced my OP with the comment "it's not the Bears style". If the playoffs are no longer on the line, there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking a couple guys you want to see in real game situations to see how they fare. I'm not taking about taking the entire offensive line and switching them out or anything - that would be suicide recipe for our QB and RB. I'm talking about a few positions maybe for a half with a chance to play the whole game if they look like they belong.

I'd like to rescind my request to see more of Steltz after seeing him fill in for Mike Brown vs the Pack tonight. Did a great job of getting steamrolled by Ryan Grant.

Well, I don't blame him that much. It was like his second/third play. After that, he was much better. I remember one where I kind of admired his strength, taking on the blocker and talking Ryan Grant. He made some plays.
