O'Bryant, Giddens and Cassell for Corey Brewer

Post#1 » by Jammer » Wed Dec 17, 2008 12:01 am

Here is a 3 Team Trade ( Trade ID 4872663 )

http://www.realgm.com/src_tradechecker/4/

that gets the Celtics Corey Brewer and 2 open roster spots (one for Mutombo)
in exchange for Patrick O'Bryant, J.R. Giddens and Sam Cassell.

Minnesota takes back slightly less salary from Boston than Brewer's,
and thus waives Sam Cassell, who returns to the Celtics as a coach.

The Wolves still have one player too many,
so they do a simultaneous trade with Charlotte;
sending Rashad McCants and Brian Cardinal to Charlotte
for Gerald Wallace, who Charlotte is apparently trying to dump the salary of.

Minnesota gets a true 3, and sends UNC grad McCants someplace that the
restricted free agent apparently wouldn't mind going to. Minnesota
gets Wallace's contract, but unloads Cardinals, making it a win win
for Minnesota and Charlotte.

Thoughts.

An alternative for the Celtics is to simply offer O'Bryant, who can be traded to any of the
other 29 teams for cash or a pick (he's a minimum salary player)
around to see what kind of cash or pick they will be offered for him.

But I think that O'Bryant's upside is higher than Glen Davis', although it might
take two years for O'Bryant to develop the lower body strength and smarts to
be effective on the block offensively and defensively.

Giddens is sort of superfluous with Tony Allen, Ray Allen and Bill Walker;
heck, even Pruitt might be able to play some SG.

Isn't Brewer out for the year?

Yes, he has a torn ACL.

That is partially why Minnesota might take on Minnesota native O'Bryant
and Giddens in exchange for Brewer, who won't be available until next year.

Minnesota was in every game until the last few minutes with Brewer,
since he's been out, they have been getting blown out or have no shot at winning.

Brewer is like a point forward, who seems to be developing a shot.

He's 6' 6.25 inches without shoes. Skinny as a rail.
Hauled in 18 rebounds one game last year.
High basketball IQ.

I would hold out unless the Timberwolves threw in Al Jefferson. I guess I might settle for Kevin Love.

You guys think Minnesota is in 'win now at all costs' mode or something and would give up on a recent lottery pick since he's out this year?

What?

Why would the 23-2 Boston Celtics trade for a guy who has a torn ACL? I would trade Giddens for a first this year because we don't have one. We obviously don't need Giddens this year, and we have Bill Walker.

It's not a bad idea by Ainge. Perhaps we can get a mid first round pick out of it, especially when it looks like the kid is a player.

If Ainge doesn't like the picks that he's offered for Giddens or O'Bryant (if available),
Danny might just sell them for cash to a team with a trade exception or cap space.

However, this trade, which can't go thru until December 23,
creates two roster spots, one which would be taken by Mutombo,
and the other would be available for someone like Marbury (who I think is pleading his way onto the Lakers while they shop Sasha Vujacic with Marbury becoming backup SG and part time PG),

or Jason Williams or anyone else bought out (like Joe Smith).

Plus, the Celtics get a full sized SF for next season behind Paul Pierce,
with a high basketball IQ, team player,
and potential impact player on both ends of the floor.

Minnesota gets a true SG in Giddens, which makes sense they reportedly are shopping
McCants, who will be a restricted FA this summer. Supposedly, Charlotte is interested in
McCants, which is the other side of my trade if you read my initial post.

O'Bryant is a Minnesota native returning home, to a team that plays
6' 8.25 inch true height Al Jefferson at center,
and does not intend to re-sign Jason Collins as backup center this center.

It gives Minnesota another big, which in a draft predicted to have 3 to 6 decent PG's,
and maybe one center,
means Minnesota is more likely to get a decent PG this June's draft
than they are a big.

This draft is supposed to be especially lean since everyone came out in 2008,
it's supposed to suck. If Danny held Giddens to June he'd probably get a 20 something pick,
but right now, rosters are pretty full.

Danny may just have to sell Giddens or O'Bryant for cash if
he doesn't like the picks that he's offered,
but I think that this is a fair, and beneficial trade, for both parties.

The other side of the trade was Gerald Wallace (and his contract) from Charlotte
going to Minnesota for Rashad McCants and Brian Cardinal.

Didn't someone post something like this several weeks ago.

Corey Brewer was not very good to begin with. Now he has a torn ACL. Why are we discussing this?

While we're here, can someone get a time machine, go back one year, and propose a Glen Davis, Eddie House, and a future second round pick for Adam Morrison?
