You don't pass on the best player in the NBA because he might not fit perfectly with what you already have. Plus both Harris and Lebron are elite on the fast break, so I don't buy for a second that they wouldn't fit together.
Which would u rather play for:
NJ or Det
NJ or MIA
NJ or PHO
NJ or CLE
NJ or NY
NJ or CHI
It would most likely be NJ for one year then NY.
Detroit? Rip is turning 31 in two months. Sheed is a shell of his former self and is already in his mid-thirties. AI would have to be let go for them to get under the cap. Prince turns 28 later this season. They have Stuckey and a bunch of indistinguishable youth. I wouldn't call that overly attractive to anyone, let alone 25 year-olds like Lenbron, Wade, Bosh, or Amare.
Beasley and Wade is attractive. So is Devin Harris and Brook Lopez, and whatever else is added between now and then. The Nets have 3 1st round picks and they are committed to player development.
Phoenix? Nash and Shaq are old already, and the entire team is floundering with their new coach.
The Cavs are interesting because they could become either the greatest team of all time or a lottery team depending on what happens that offseason. Amare will not set his ego aside to play with Lebron. Would the other players? Maybe Bosh would but I still doubt it. Guys that are that good want to be on great teams but they don't usually want to be sidekicks.
NY has Duhon(decent, nothing special), Lee(decent, soon to be expensive), and Gallinari. They owe a 1st to Utah this year or next.
Chicago has Rose and Deng. If they resign more young talent they can't afford a free agent in 2010.
This year and next is really about laying the groundwork and building to attract one of those big free agents. None of these franchises are far and away more attractive than the Nets. This doesn't mean the Nets are guaranteed to get one of the big FAs. It means that they aren't guaranteed not to.
There is nothing wrong with getting Melo, but it would be foolish to sacrifice a chance at the 2010 free agents. If the Nets can't snag one of the young stars that year, they could conceivably wait and go after Melo (or whoever) the next year. To rely on getting Melo in 11 would be as foolish as relying on Lebron in 10.
All we know right now is that the team will have money for a max contract in 2010. We still have two drafts (3 1st rounders) between now and then. Harris and Lopez are the only fixtures on the team IMO. The goal should be to make the team as attractive as possible for the year we have the money, by building through the draft, and trading for youth on the upswing.
BTW, it would probably be best for the Nets to miss the playoffs this year. Hopefully someone gets desperate for Carter.
