OT: PG County = the basketball mecca of the US

Post#1 » by keynote » Thu Dec 18, 2008 4:34 pm

Nice ESPNmag article highlighting Prince George's County's rise to prominence in the basketball world.

Actually, [Beasley and Durant] are just the lead curl in an unprecedented wave of talent that hails from Prince George's County, a predominantly African-American area of 841,315 that shares a border with DC. Nine players with roots in Prince George's (PG to insiders) have played in the league in the previous five years, and though only six are currently on rosters, that number should soon crack double digits. Fifteen locals suit up for BCS conference schools, including UNC's Ty Lawson, Duke's Nolan Smith, Pitt's Sam Young and Georgetown's Austin Freeman and Chris Wright. In the past three years, the county has produced six McDonald's All-Americans—more than any state except California, which has 43 residents for every one of PG's.

Of course, one would think that Gary Williams would be able to do a better job of recruiting in his own backyard. JTIII seems to be doing okay in that regard:

[W]hen Georgetown returned to the Final Four for the first time in 22 years, it was led by two more from the county, Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert, who are now in the NBA. "PG kids face such stiff competition from such a young age," says Thompson. "By the time they get to college, there's nothing they haven't seen. You love to coach kids like that."

Well, as a former resident of Howard County (and, as a graduate of the Phil Chenier-David DuPree Summer Basketball Camp), I can tell you that HoCo has a little ways to go before we catch up to PG County.

I have been corrected a few times recently when referring to the county as "PG," that it should be referred to by its full name, the same way Prince William is. Anyone else share this sentiment or have a similar experience?

I've never been corrected by anyone on that point. The only times I hear PG County referred to as "Prince George's" is when I'm listening to WTOP.

wish High Point, my old high school, could share in that fortune. We've had a couple of good players, but nothing too special.

LOL I went to High Point for a couple years. We never really were good at anything except for baseball and track.

And shame on Gary Williams and the Terps basketball program. This article angers me.

Me and the people on my floor have had this conversation many times. The people not from PG are astounded when we tell them all the people from this county. It really is pretty awesome.

There is no place liike PG for basketball, its true.

LOL!! Yah, I remember when he came from Germany. He ended up going to Duke, but got little to no PT, and then transferred to someplace else.
There was another guy, but I forget his name now...he played PF next to David Robinson back in the day at Navy.
Other than that, I cant think of anyone else that made any impact...

Went to Friendly in PG County.

If you say Prince George's County either you aren't from there or you wear ascots and hold your pinky out when you're drinking fine wine (while us folk from PG county are drinking a 40 ounce.)

Is Walt Williams the last big time player from PG to play for the Terps or what?

CCJ, I think you are right. The Wizard is the last Terp from PGC...

And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

Went to middle and high school with and played ball with Walt Williams.

The thing with PG vs Prince Georges has to do with the demographics of Prince Georges County. Prominate blacks and others feel slighted when the county is mentioned as PG as opposed to Prince Georges. No other county in the area is mentioned with initials. Not to mention some of the negativity associated with PG county. So because it's predominately black, there's a movement brewing to change the common name to Prince Georges' County.

When my parents moved to Oxon Hil (now called Fort Washington) in 1972, I was one of two black children in a combined class of 60. The only area I recall being predominately black back then was right by Suitland.

Over the next 10 years or so, by the early 80s, I'd say the county became probably 25% black.

I left for the military in the mid 80s when around Friendly was maybe 40% black. IIRC around that time whites started buying homes Northern Virginia or to Montgomery and outer areas. That was then.

I visited Friendly this past summer and it was as if whites weren't allowed. Darn near no whites out there now. Amazing to me.

I remember being called the n word and having a bunch of fights over it ...right in good old PG county. I'm old, man. :) Back in the day they had to bus black children into Ft Washington.

Now, blacks are worried about it being called PG county for the negative connotation.!!??

Bill Cosby would probably say something to the effect of who's responsible for the crime in PG county? I know I was shocked to stay at the hotels right across the street from Andrews AFB and to see how run down and dangerous they appear to be.

It should be called PG County.

Was Len Bias from PG as well? He could have been something special in the NBA with the Celtics. I remember Larry Bird saying that he would attend training camp (he rarely did this) just to work with Bias.

The Bias brothers were from Hyattsville. Monty Williams of San Antonio fame was a graduate of Potomac High in Oxon Hill. Walt Williams went to Crossland in Temple HIlls. Mike Sweetney went to Oxon Hill, and Delonta West went to E Roosevelt.

ooo, an NBA player from my alma mater (West). I also had PE class with Jermaine Lewis, but that's a different sport.
