Jeff Van Gundy or Mo Cheeks as defensive coach
In the games so far our glaring weakness has been defence.. and to some extent i think it is bad coaching.. Does not look like Kurt Rambis is upto the mark as far as defensive coaching goes..
Jerry Buss need to bring Jeff Van Gundy or Mo Cheeks or should look at alternatives for defensive coaching..
I like Jeff Van gundy.. but i am sure there are cheaper alternatives...

JVG wants a head coaching job and no way he settles to be a part of Phil's subordinates and Mo Cheeks was blessed with some good defensive players in Philly which doesn't exactly mean that he's a defensive mastermind.

Phil's ego would not suffer a defensive guru even if it would help

never going to happen. big name coaches aren't settling for assistant jobs, phil isn't putting a big name coach on his staff, buss isnt paying for a big name coach to be an assistant when he pays jackson so much. pretty cut and dry.

How about Avery Johnson? I'm pretty sure he wouldn't, just food for thought.

Honestly I'd like to trade PJax for Coach Pop I love his style he's the best coach for this LAL team. He'd give them a swift kick in their ass. I like how he is on top of everything and nips it in the bud immediatley during the game, and demands a lot out of his players, but gets the ultimate respect from them in return. Sure PJax rules and I'm glad he's our coach, but I prefer Coach Pop's style.

This should be locked on the pretense that it could never happen.

yea, i agree.. big name coaches would never take an assistant job once they've been in the big league.. it's like a demotion to your stock.. Although with the economy these days.. who knows..
i too think we need a new defensive coach or at least change it up

Bring in Michael Cooper.
He can teach defense and is well respected.
Do it Mitch!

Michael Cooper is a failure as a coach.
Rambis is not exactly Poppavich either but why not Pippen? Is he with the Bulls right now?
If not that would be the way to go. I think he might be with the Bulls cause I know he works with Deng.

Rambis can't defend the pick and roll himself. A coach can only do so much. It's up to the players to freaking get it and play defense like their life depended on it. It's not the coaches' fault, in my opinion. It's the players' mentality and ability that sucks, not Rambis.

Phil has been ripping of the Lakers for awhile now. I mean after the 3 rings he gave up and has been stealing from his gfs daddy all this time. I hope we dont resign him. We need a new coach to fire up ths team. I think everyone has stopped listing to Phil and his Zen ways. Time for a change.

Re: Jeff Van Gundy or Mo Cheeks as defensive coach
I beg to defer... I think offense is ability.. Defense is about basics, court awareness and coaching..
Only one on one defense is ability
I think Everybody should be able to play help defense, which is what most teams including Boston play.. Help defense does not mean all people attack the guy with the ball leaving all men open which is what LA seems to be doing a lot..
Coaching staff should be able to study film and coach the players.. And not all schemes work with all teams..
That said .. in the two loses i really like the defensive intensity.. We have lost by a margin of 3 points and most of the fingers point to bad offensive execution.. But still this is a good start.. and we will get there..
I actually enjoyed the stops we were getting in the loses more than the victories we had so far..
We are close to bridging the gap.. Our hole is now the back up PG with Jordan on the injured list..

Re: Jeff Van Gundy or Mo Cheeks as defensive coach
you can't just hire a defensive coach and expect them to start playing top notch defense. it's called a difference in philosphy, and phil jackson and jeff van gundy are on very opposite ends of the spectrum. phil jackson is laissez fare while van gundy is very hands on. hiring van gundy would bring a change in the offense. one key in the triangle offense is that everyone crashes the glass for offensive rebounds. with van gundy, he preaches that as soon as someone shoots, all 4 guys should trot back on defense. this allows little transition opportunities for the opposing team.
