deal just finalized.
with a healthy Luongo and now Sundin, this team will be a hard out in the playoffs.

Yep.
The pre game show right now had on Brian Burke and they were just talking about the signing. Saying how the rangers would have had to clear a lot of cap room and such.

Re: Sundin signs with Canucks
Sundin wasn't going to the Rangers unless the Rangers unloaded one of Drury or Gomez. No GM in the East would make a trade with the Rangers. Vancouver would be dumb to take one of those 2 because of their contracts and the Sedin twins are up for a new contract in the offseason.

I know what you're thinking. We're in the middle of a city, what's a hawk doing there?

Just proves Sundin was in it for the money all along - cause he sure as hell isn't winning a cup in Vancouver.

Re: Sundin signs with Canucks
As soon as I heard of the initial offer of 2 years/20 million from the Canucks, I knew that they would be a legitimate contender for his services. I heard last night on cbc during the Habs/Flyers game that Gainey told Sundins agent when approached about his services again that they were no longer looking in that direction and more in the hunt for a D-man. So it wasn't that Sundin didn't want to come to Mtl, it was more Mtl no longer interested.
So then there remained the Canucks and the Rangers... and the Rangers had no room whatsoever to sign him, and couldn't find any trade partners (only ones able to trade with them really would have been Vancouver). This left only one option for Sundin, and it was the Vancouver Canucks... I think he'll have a very positive impact on the club, but I don't think they'll be anywhere close to winning the stanley cup this year. They'll make the playoffs, maybe the 2nd round... but that's as close as Sundin gets to winning a cup, IMO.

Has just as good of a chance in Vancouver with one more piece (still have room to bring in a 6mill a year player) as he would be in NYR after taking a key part out.
As a Flames fan, this was not the best news i could have heard

What contending team was enough under the cap to sign him? I mean nobody was going to help out the Rangers to help them nab Sundin. At least he has a reason to go to Vancouver he wanted to play with some fellow countrymen and wasn't just in it for the money. Should be interesting to see how the 'Nucks do and finish.

If Sundin wanted a Cup that badly, he would have signed with Detroit or San Jose for the absolute minimum.

Those teams showed zero interest. They are set, they have what they want, and didnt want to deal with the distractions that the Sundin situations brought. Fact is, he had a few choices, and its hard to argue he didnt take the best fit.
People say NY was a better fit. . .how is that possible? THey would have had to change a good portion of their team to accomodate one year (or half a year) with Sundin.
Van was teh only realistic option on a lot of fronts

Re: Sundin signs with Canucks
Detroit actually had on and off interest, according to most rumor sites. Any team would be stupid to not Sundin for the minimum.

Det is a nice destination, so is San Jose, even Montreal. . . . but not one player (of note. . not even of Sundins status. . simply of note) signed for the very minimum. To suggest that Sundin just went for money, when he left some on the table and went to the only team that had offers that could actually take him on without sending players elsewhere is pretty far out there. To suggest that Sundin is only after money when he just signed with a team in first place of the most competitive division in hockey is even further.
The point is, every player in the league is as much at fault for not taking the bare minimum to try to win as Sundin is.
