Albert Haynesworth will become free agent

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Thu Dec 18, 2008 1:22 am

"The good news for Albert Haynesworth on Tuesday is he made it to the Pro Bowl for the second straight season.

But that's potentially bad news for the Titans, who now might have a harder time keeping the defensive tackle around after this season.

As a result of the honor, Haynesworth is set to become an unrestricted free agent. One of four triggers in the contract Haynesworth signed in July stated if he made it to the Pro Bowl the team would agree not to place the franchise tag on him for the second straight season.

Haynesworth's agent, Chad Speck, said it not the time to discuss the future.

"I am just excited for Albert that he made the Pro Bowl and he is certainly deserving of it,'' Speck said. "Right now I know he is clearly focused on trying to get healthy and making it back for the playoff run. I think the contract stuff will take care of itself at the end of season.''

The Titans declined to comment.

Haynesworth suffered an MCL sprain Sunday and will miss the final two games of the regular season. He is expected back for the playoffs. Haynesworth has a team-high 8.5 sacks and 75 tackles.

The Titans would like to sign Haynesworth to a long-term deal. They can negotiate with him exclusively until Feb. 27 when he'd be free to talk to other teams.

In recent months the Titans and Haynesworth's agent have not been in negotiations, and aren't supposed to engage in talks until the regular season ends."

Abraham and Haynesworth would be a lethal combo, but that's a pipe dream.

The bidding war is going to be ridiculous, if he lets it get that far. He turned down 4yr/$45M with at least $18.5 guaranteed last summer and he's only driven his price up.

I would caution any speculation about a destination until he actually hits the streets. His agent is known for being overly fair to teams that stuck by his clients in the past. Having said that, I can't see any way the Titans pay that kind of $$ for anyone.

Mission accomplished for Haynesworth. Does he continue his recent play or does he revert back to his old lazy self once he gets that big paycheck?

For all intents and purposes, people in the lockerroom have said that the stomp incident changed him, and that he's a different person now than he was 2-3 years ago...

Personally, I don't believe it. I don't see him fully reverting to his above average ways before, but I don't see him as the best DT in the league as he has been, after he gets that big fat paycheque....

If he is gonna be in a bidding war, it would not surprise me if the Redskins are heavily interested in him. Defensive tackle is probably one of our biggest weaknesses, we have a bunch of complimentary ones and haven't had a dominant DT since Dave Butz.

Not sure how exctatic I'll be. Haynesworth seems like the type of player who takes a Dan Snyder paycheck and calls it a career.

I've heard from a lot of people that he is indeed a different cat now. But I also agree that he's a real risk to sign to such a fat deal. Really just about any big man is, the peak life expectancy of those interior linemen is so limited. Of course I worried the same about Shaun Rogers and he's unquestionably the Browns MVP this year.

It's not as if I have any statistics on the subject, but Pat Williams is 35 and I know Sam Adams played until he was 35+.

Nah, life expectancy of these guys are usually long from what I've seen... The elite guys stay elite for quite a while...

Just that I worry that Haynesworth is a flake and that whoever signs him to the biggest deal for a DT ever (which he will get whether with the Titans or not), he'll just regress back in to an above average DT...

The Skins should not get in on this. We have a good running defense as it is, so Haynesworth becomes redundant. They need help at linebacker and defensive end anyway.

An above average Haynesworth is still better than 90% of the defensive tackles anyway.

A complete non-sequitur.

I expect the next fad in Defense to be the pass-rushing DT and interior stunts and twists on the D-Line. Especially with the media talking about how deep the Titans' D-Line is and how they generate a pass rush even though they blitz only 15-16% of the time...

Totally agree. All the offenses are built around left tackles, so defenses are bound to look to attack the weak points elsewhere. Some teams already do it pretty well--TEN, BAL, DAL, PIT, CHI when Tommie Harris shows up.

Heck, the Bengals did a fantastic job of it against Cleveland. They saw Joe Thomas and Kevin Shaffer at the tackles and decided to funnel everything up the middle. Domata Peko had the quickness to shift out if he had to, and they brought LBs and safeties thru the box and up the gut. There were several pass plays where Joe Thomas was just standing there looking for someone to block. Of course it's a lot easier to do that against a 3rd strign QB who wouldn't start for most college teams still playing.

It will definitely depend on the personnel though... You need sure tacklers at Corners, and speedy edge gus with a lot of closing speed, and sideline-to-sideline linebackers, once you funnel out the QB/RBs towards the sidelines...
