OT: PG County = the basketball mecca of the US

Was Len Bias from PG as well? He could have been something special in the NBA with the Celtics. I remember Larry Bird saying that he would attend training camp (he rarely did this) just to work with Bias.

The Bias brothers were from Hyattsville. Monty Williams of San Antonio fame was a graduate of Potomac High in Oxon Hill. Walt Williams went to Crossland in Temple HIlls. Mike Sweetney went to Oxon Hill, and Delonta West went to E Roosevelt.

I was at Maryland when Bias went there and did get a chance to meet him. Would see him all the time around campus but was in awe of the dude. Don't really remember much but that he spoke to me and I just remember thinking that dude's down to earth as can be.

Tragic what happened to him and his brother.

Some DeMatha NBA guys (not sure if all were PG County residents) from the 70s-90s: Dantley, Kenny Carr, Sidney Lowe, Danny Ferry, Adrian Branch, Jerod Mustaf, Keith Bogans, and Joe Forte.

John Turner went to Suitland in the 80's also. Also Julian Peterson played basketball at Crossland, and was nice, but is in the NFL now. He was unstoppable! Was a starter as a sophomore

My son plays on a 12 and under AAU team in PG county. He has played against most of the kids that were pictured in the first pages on the article. As a matter of fact, the young man in the center on the right is probably one of the best players in the country. His 10U team were the National champions. His 11U team came in 4th.

I was shocked to see that PG county was ranked #1, but I will say that I agree that there are a lot of good ballers in this area. The team my son team played against last weekend has one of the best 2 guards in the country also. He also played on the 10U team that won the Championship and came in 4th last year.

When my son was playing 10 and under we had 2 players that came from Pennsylvania to play with us. Their parents had them come to this area because of the stiffer competition. Last season, we had a team come from West Virginia to play in our Spring League. They also came for the stiffer competion their coach told me they were blowing all the other teams in WV out.

When the teams from this area play for Nationals generally 6-8 teams from our age groups will qualify, whereas in some other areas only 1 or 2 teams make it. So I think the AAU organization recognizes how many good teams/players we have in this area too.

1980s PG county would punish today's PG county.

They were that good.

Capital Centre fans would punish Verizon Center fans too.

There is nothing particularly outstanding about 2000-2008 PG county.

Louis Bullock was another great PG product. I remember him and Preston Rucker as a nasty duo for Canterbury in '91 or so.
