Either we are offering that just to say we pursued him to cover our asses, or for some reason we think he would come here for less money (which would absolutely not happen, he is taking the largest contract). I don't think we are that active in the going after him, thankfully.

I love Teixeira, I just don't love the idea of giving the second highest contract in baseball to a guy who is not even the best at his position and not even a top 10 player in baseball.

1B is the easiest position to play and the easiest to replace. In tier 1 is Pujols, then in tier 2 is Howard, Morneau, Teixeira, Fielder, Gonzalez. Each of them has their flaws but for the most part I feel they are on a similar level. You don't just give the second highest contract in baseball to a guy who is "top 5 at his position", especially not when that position is 1B.

Even Giambi gave us 30/100 last year. And although Swisher is definitely not on the same level as Teixeira, he is capable of 25-30 home runs. He hit 35 two years ago, which is more than Teixeira has hit in each of the past 3 years. Like I said, by no means am I comparing the talent of the two, but I just feel that we can get ENOUGH production offensively out of 1B in the next few years until Jesus Montero is ready (yes I am assuming he makes the inevitable switch to 1B) so that we don't have to go out and lock up the easiest position for 8 years at $23 million per.

Howard may not be the greatest hitter, but he is fully capable of hitting up to 60 home runs in any season. Teixeira hasn't hit over 33 in the past 3 years. That possible HR difference is enough to make up for strikeouts. Fielder is fat as hell, but he is also a 50+ HR threat and is actually a very good hitter. Gonzalez is maybe the most underrated player in baseball and might be better than Teixeira right now, and Morneau has 1 MVP and should've won his 2nd this season.

Not saying those guys are better than Tex, but that they are all in the 2nd tier of 1B, you can rank them however you want. None of them are worth $23 mil a year either, so I'm not saying some of them are but Tex is not.

EDIT:
And Pujols with 1 elbow is still twice the player any of those guys are.

I believe the Angels may be out, but Boston is still very much in this. I'm not sure how involved we really are either.

Return to New York Yankees
