Only one on one defense is ability
I think Everybody should be able to play help defense, which is what most teams including Boston play.. Help defense does not mean all people attack the guy with the ball leaving all men open which is what LA seems to be doing a lot..
Coaching staff should be able to study film and coach the players.. And not all schemes work with all teams..
That said .. in the two loses i really like the defensive intensity.. We have lost by a margin of 3 points and most of the fingers point to bad offensive execution.. But still this is a good start.. and we will get there..
I actually enjoyed the stops we were getting in the loses more than the victories we had so far..
We are close to bridging the gap.. Our hole is now the back up PG with Jordan on the injured list..Erik Eleven wrote:Rambis can't defend the pick and roll himself. A coach can only do so much. It's up to the players to freaking get it and play defense like their life depended on it. It's not the coaches' fault, in my opinion. It's the players' mentality and ability that sucks, not Rambis.
I agree on most of that, including what you said about the stops we got in those losses.
But regarding the coaches' inability to teach defense, if you count the rings of our coaching staff, it becomes a very questionable statement that they don't know how to teach their players how to defend the pick and roll and the weak side three.
Phil Jackson 11 rings
Frank Hamblen 9 rings
Kurt Rambis 7 rings
Brian Shaw 3 rings
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 6 rings and 6 MVPs
Craig Hodges 2 rings
Jim Cleamons 8 rings
That's 46 championships amongst our coaches. Still think it's not Sasha, Radman, Bynum, Odom, even Kobe? The players need to be held accountable for their lame defensive mentality.
