we have money for Texiera, right?
so the trade melky for cameron, we take on 10 mill
our offer for andy is 10 mill
so why not use that 20 mill to get Tex
let phil, aceves, kennedy use spot 5
and rotate gardner, melky till a jackson is ready
am I missing something?

Cashman has made it clear that the payroll will be less than last season's. I think we can make a run at Tex if we DON'T sign Andy, and use a combination of Hughes/Aceves in the 5th spot.

Re: we have money for Texiera, right?
We would have to up the offer for Texiera meaning either more than 8 years or more than 20 million per season, Texiera would be nice but I dont think we will know if we are in the race until Boston makes an offer comparable to the Angels. I think if Boston is ahead in the race to get him then we might snag them up and pay a little more (its a win win because we get a great bat to put behind ARod and a great defender at first and Boston gets noone).
Go Knicks!

Another option would be to deal Nady to free up a little money (around 5 or so million). Still go after Andy. Skip Cameron. That would leave us with an outfield of Damon, Gardner and Swisher with Teixiera at 1B. I wonder if a deal could be swung with Nady and Kennedy as the centerpieces for David DeJesus to play CF. Royals get more pop and a young, 5 year cost controller starter. Yankees get a CF this year and a replacement to Damon next year, without having to dip into the free agent market. -Jitpal

I'm not sold that the Teix rumors aren't just posturing to help drive his deal up. I suppose it's possible, but like nykgm said, it'd be tight if they want to stick to a relatively limited payroll. I'd rather see him end up with the Nats or something. He's going to cost at least 10/200 and aside from two post-trade stints with the Braves in 07 and and the Angels in 08 he hasn't looked like a truly top-level hitter.

I dont think Cashman wants to tie up 1B for the next 8 years. You have a lot of stars that will no longer be viable in the field and will need to see duty at 1B....you have Posada coming up sson...Jeter after him...and eventually Arod

Well, looks like the Red Sox are out of the running for Tex. If they're out of the running I'd imagine it would be a little much that the Yanks would like to spend as well.
I'd prefer over Manny over Tex anyway. Better hitter, would look very nice behind Arod, and could be had for 5-7 less years.

Re: we have money for Texiera, right?
i would not give Tex 10 years... Im not really keen on giving anyone a contract over 7 years. However if they could get Tex for 10 years, where there is an opt out clause he can trigger after 5 years, and a mutual option after say 7 years. something like that would change my opinion. However i highly doubt that would ever happen. which means no Tex, as much as i think manny would destroy the soxs and rip the hearts out of sox fans chest. i dont want him for 20plus mil a year. nor do i want him for more then 2 years.

Re: we have money for Texiera, right?
We better be out of the picture at this point. Tex is an amazing player, but he isn't even the best player at his position in baseball. Giving a 1B $25 million a season is a bad enough baseball decision, and when you give it to a guy who isn't even the best at that position it could be a future setback for any franchise. One can make a case that he is the 4th best 1B in baseball after Pujols, Howard, Morneau (I don't feel that way, but the case can be made), so going over $18 mil a season for a guy like him would be absurd. Great player, but he is a 1B that has hit over 33 home runs just twice and is about to cash in for the third largest contract in baseball history, behind only ARod's last two contracts. If the Red Sox are truly out of the race, they are making a smart baseball decision. That is a franchise that for the most part knows how to pick their spots when it comes to spending a large amount of money, so I would expect them to drop out.
The Angels are another smart organization, but they may have no choice but to throw the money at Tex because if they lose him, they will be one injured pitcher away from maybe missing the postseason. And as for the Nats, theres no proof that they know how to spend money, so I think this comes down to those 2 teams with him returning to the Angels.

I'd put the ever-forgotten Lance Berkman 2nd on the list behind Pujols. You could also make cases for Kevin Youkilis and maybe Miguel Cabrera if he stays at first. Prince Fielder might be in the conversation soon since he's just entering his prime now. I do like Teix better than Morneau and Howard, especially if Howard continues his 2008 streakiness. Still, he hasn't proven definitively that he's not a .900 OPS hitter with good defense at first. Not that any of that is a bad thing, but it's not something you pay 20-25 million a year for. Not when you can sign Adam Dunn to give you most of that offense on a deal that's half as long and 5-10 million less per.

f_ck giving that man 8-10 years. For Christ's sakes we have vets that will need to move to 1st not to mention Juan Miranda & Jesus Montero in the minors who will eventually deserve time there.

Get Posada a first baseman's glove. Or Matsui.
The Yankees need outfield defense. I'd rather spend some of that $$ on Abreu and Rocco Baldelli. Why invest all that $$ on pitching when you don't have an everyday outfielder who can catch the ball or keep a runner from taking an extra base?
Mike Cameron isn't the answer. The guy strikes out 150 times a year and hits .240. Plus he's on the downside of his career. I'd rather have Melky Cabrera.
They also need a young catcher who can handle pitchers and throw runners out, to back up Molina. Posada's catching days are probably over.

Rocco Baldelli isn't the answer if you're looking for an everyday OF'er. I doubt the Yankees would want to go after a guy that can't stay healthy.
I'd rather go after Manny, he's the best hitter in free agency and would protect A-Rod. I'd like Texiera but not to 7+ years and over 150 million.

Sure, go after Manny. But he's a butcher in the outfield, so he has to DH. Matsui has to DH. Posada too. How many DH's can you have on one roster?
