John Salmons is being offered around

Post#1 » by cfan79 » Tue Dec 23, 2008 3:46 pm

John Salmons is being offered around. He rejected a deal that would have sent him to Toronto because he didn't want to move to Canada.

He's a very good player, they would want more than we can offer.

He could be a nice addition and an ideal veteran at small forward. But, Sacramento prefers to acquire an expiring contract. A reports said that they've an interest in Szczerbiak's contract. Yeah, what team doesn't...? So, unless Boston has a player or two with an expiring contract that can come close to Salmons' salary. Then I don't see a way Ainge can add Salmons.

Those that Ainge can offer carry little to no value right now.

Is Tony Allen gonna eat him for dinner?

LOL!

The thing about Salmons though is that his contract runs past 2010. I'm not sure if Ainge would be willing to screw up his cap space before then. He'd be nice to have coming off the bench. However, I do recall him griping about not starting last year when he was playing behind Artest, so I'm not too sure if he'd be comfortable in that role.

One would assume (based on nothing in particular) that Salmons might reconsider coming off the bench (and still get around 30 minutes a night) to play behind Pierce/Allen for a championship team, as opposed to coming off the bench to play behind Ron Artest in Sacramento.

I just don't know how the cap stuff would work, exactly. The trade would make Tony Allen expendable, so, I suppose you could send him out in the deal. But, you'd pretty much have to pair him with Scalabrine to make the deal work and, if you do that, you either have to subsidize his contract entirely or offer them some draft picks. Or, both. Still might not be enough.

Interesting idea, though.

Scal and Giddens (or Pruitt, O'Bryant or Big Baby for that matter) works in the trade checker. They would be paying about a mill less a year and getting out of a yr of mid-level type money when Scal's deal expires.

Salmons would be an incredible addition to the team (great all around offensive player and great defender as well), but once again we don't have the most ideal options in the world to offer.

You're probably right, but if they just want young guys with cheap contracts we've got plenty of those. I'd probably want to hold onto Powe, Bill Walker and Pruitt. They can have any of the other young bench guys though.

Walker, Giddens and TA for Salmons works on the checker. We upgrade from TA to Salmons, Walker & Giddens are expendable. That's a clear upgrade.

Still leaves Scalabrine, O'Bryant and Glen Davis to be packaged for better fits/vets.

Think they'd go for it

Baby, Tony Allen and Scala

for

Salmons

Possible Roster

Perkins/Mutumbo/O'Bryant
KG/Powe
Pierce/Salmons
R.Allen/House
Rondo/Cassell/Pruitt

D-league: Bill Walker, JR Giddens

It didn't work in the tradechecker for me. You'd have to add Scala into a deal to make up for salaries.

Ah, I'd checked that deal as part of a larger trade. It's hard to give up Scalabrine or BBD without getting back another big man somehow.

The trade I put through on the checker sent Walker, Giddens and TA to Sacto for Salmons, Scal & O'Bryant to Seattle for Swift, and BBD to Denver for Balkman.

Rondo/Cassell/Pruitt
Allen/House
Pierce/Salmons/Balkman
Garnett/Powe
Perkins/Swift

Roster spots open up for 1-2 veteran hop-ons (Marbury? Smith? P.J.?) and we re-shuffle the bench.

the guy is a ball-stopping, loser of a player - all stats, no winning bball...he dribbles the air out of the ball and dominates the shot-clock - no thanks at any price...

I was about to ask about these things, because prior to reading this I wanted to trade for him. I definitely wouldn't want him now if you're right about these things.

I've been watching other teams on my "Online TV" and the Celtics really are blessed with good character, intelligent players (excluding Tony Allen at times).

Watching the Grizzlies take forced shots all night made me realize how good Boston really is.

Salmons is having a huge fluke year for a bad team. For his career he is no better than TA. Not with his salary/contract length is he worth it

Plus his splits between coming off the bench and starting show that he has only been good when he starts. He is awful coming off the bench. He would be coming off the bench here, obviously. Hence, no interest.

I always thought this guy was awful in Philadelphia. I guess he's putting up big numbers now. But he was just average at everything, good at nothing...

B-b-but .. Why ? We're 26-2 and running, it's not a lock that Salmons would be a help.
