Is Pau Gasol trade still a steal
Considering what we lost for Pau Gasol..
1> Javaris Crichton
2> Marc Gasol
and 2 first round picks..
Javaris could have filled our Back up Point Gaurd/ Shooting gaurd role.. and a really good defender.
Marc Gasol is currently averaging 10pts/8 rebs per game..
And the 2 first round picks ... Do u guys still the deal was worth it..
If we had kept the rights of Marc or had retained Javaris we would have saves atleast 10million dollars as we could have waived Sasha or not given the large deal that Bynum was asking for..
Did we really have to give up Javaris or Marc for the deal to go through??

Now that I look back, if we gave up Yue instead of marc or jav it would have been a robbery.

Re: Is Pau Gasol trade still a steal
I think that trade was one of the greatest steals of all time
Loss of kwame was an addition by subtraction, although he did bring some inside toughness
Getting Gasol also made it clear to Kobe that the organization is very serious about winning and probably cemented his decision to be a Laker for life (I hope)
gasol is a constant thread on offense and an underrated defender.

^Great points. Although, I don't think now and I didn't think then, that the trade was as lopsided as everyone was making it out to be.
Marc Gasol has the potential to be better than Pau. IMO Javaris will be a solid player in this league, if not a star, and getting rid of Kwame wasn't a big deal b/c just about any team would've taken his expiring contract (i.e. he was actually a much bigger asset in the trade then people want to acknowledge).

How in the world is it addition by subtraction if he brought something that our current bigs haven't? He is still a better defender than any big man we have and that "toughness" is something that cost us an NBA championship.
Having said that, yes, the deal was/is still a steal.

Re: Is Pau Gasol trade still a steal
It never was a steal, in my opinion. Both teams made out really well in that trade.
Kwame's expiring was something they desperately needed and wanted at the time.
In Marc Gasol, they knew they got a character big man, a smart player to anchor the paint as they re-build. They had his brother there for years and loved him. Low risk long term investment that fits their plan perfectly.
In Crittenton, they got a way better player than their coach realizes. I would have wanted to see Yue go instead of Crittenton, but maybe then it could be argued that we robbed them. We'll see how Yue's development goes.
Two late first round picks is something they can utilize in many different ways. It gives them flexibility in the draft.
Plus, does anyone really think that Pau would have been happy to stay there for the re-build?

no question that pau was revitalized by coming to a winning situation
and maybe memphis doesn't do the deal if marc and jarv aren't both involved

those players had to be included. mitch himself said the grizzlies wanted gasol AND yue, but went with gasol when only given a choice of one. hard to believe theyd settle for neither.

Marc Gasol will never be better than Pau. He has no athletic ability.

Re: Is Pau Gasol trade still a steal
For anyone to say this trade wasn't a steal they have to take off their homer glasses. We got an all star for Kwame freaking brown, and unproven young talent and 2 picks. No one knew how Marc would pan out in the NBA, and although he is having a decent year and looks like a good player. He's no where near the type of player Pau is. At best Marc should be a good back up center. Reminds me of like a Nazr Mohammed. The beauty of this trade was that we didn't even have to give up Lamar for Pau. Pau is so valuable to our team with his high fg percentage, rebounding, and passing. If anyone is still doubting that it wasn't a steal, just look at our record wtih him vs. our record without him. Now would we be able to be doing this well with Marc Gasol, KWame and Javaris? There's no way.

I agree that we lost some inside toughness when we lost Kwame but to say we lost the championship becuase of it is a major league stretch. I really don't think we even make it to the championship without the Gasol trade.
Please watch a few Laker games from the Kwame era. I've recently seen a few. I hate to say this about any Laker player but he was just horrible as a Laker for the most part.
I still maintain that it was a huge addition by subtraction

dude...
memphis wanted Marc AND Yue, kupchak convinced them to take only Marc Gasol
concerning crittenton, memphis wanted ONE OF farmar or crittenton
and here we are complaining that we should've traded less
Marc may end up the better player (from most accounts, he has more potential than pau when he entered the NBA)
but this was a trade to WIN NOW, not win later when kobe is growing a beard the length of a basketball court...
good for both teams, at the right time, for the right players
its christmas, be grateful we got an allstar talent for relative scraps!

Re: Is Pau Gasol trade still a steal
I dont mind Marc going to Memphis.. i dont think he has the Pau Gasol soft shooting touch game.. He is more of a center than a forward but not as tough as required by the position.. He will be ur avg center at best..
But Javaris would have done well in this current team.. Mitch should have tried to send Sun instead of Javaris.. Poor guy is got lost in all the trades, Turned him into one of the lost talents .. If he had stayed a laker he would have got significant mins this year..
As far as Sun goes i am not sure this guy has a Nba level game or even understands how NBA works.. A nervous player at PG is not a good thing.. he will never be able to make passes.. Plus the triangle offense does away with the PG position all together because the ball keeps moving around..
If he was nervous in the pre season i cant see him doing well in regular games leave alone clutch games where the pressure will be really high..
If anything Mitch missed an opportunity to win by not keeping Javaris.. He would have done well defesively against Paul Pierce or Ray allen.

You're underrating Pau Gasol if you think that trade wasn't a steal. Seldom do teams get chances to go from a playoff contender to western conf. champs.

Re: Is Pau Gasol trade still a steal
Critt avg 7pts a game last yr and Gasol avg 10pts and 6rbs. These stats lead people to question whether trading for Pau was the right things to do. Sure Marc and Critt have potential but neither is an allstar and neither may fullfill their potential. Even if the Lakers did not trade Marc there is no way the Lakers would have low balled Bynum. Gasol had not played in the NBA and had one good yr in Europe. Kobe was on the verge of destroying the Lakers and getting Gasol probably changed is mind about leaving the organization. This trade also showed the rest of the NBA that Mitch can consturct trades and not be taken advantage of. This is nothing but a win and the only thing that would have made it better is if they could have pawned walton or rad off on Memphis.

Both teams won. Don't try to view it in any way other than that.

Re: Is Pau Gasol trade still a steal
Yes, it was a great trade. A steal. Maybe. I rather have him than not to have him. Some people are still mad we traded Shaq. Well Shaq is 37 and Bynum is 21. So that might have been a factor in the process also. So many ways you can look at it over the years. Even if we had not yet drafted AB.
