Mutombo Alone will not help us win a ring
Getting Mutombo will help us a little, but he won't help us get a ring. I rather get P.J. or Joe Smith. The reason is that Mutombo has no offense and our bench lacks offense.
Behinds House, our bench lacks consisant offense players. Combine that with Perkins and Rondo not being scoring treats in close games, we need an offensive big. If you look at the Lakers game,
WE ONLY SCORED 2 POINTS IN THE LAST 3:56 OF THE GAME. It was like playing 3 on 5 on offense.
Anyone who doesn't agree, try to remember the Cavs series in game 7. If P.J. Brown does make key outside shots in the 4th quarter, we most likely lose that game. Having lost Brown and Posey will hurt us offensively in playoff type, half court style play. Give me Joe Smith or P.J. Brown over Mutombo any day for the type of team that we have.

Our bank lacks a facilitator and shot-blocking. Mutombo would solve one issue. He won't play a lot during the regular seasaon but I think he would really help us against the Cavs or the Magic.

Mutombo is so much better than Glen Davis or Leon Powe,
defensively,
that you have no idea how tough the Celtics would be if
Dikembe replaced Glen Davis in the lineup.
And, all the weak finishes that Powe and Davis
will regularyly commit against the giants
of Cleveland and LA
are replaced by someone who can finish over Gasol,
Bynum, llygauskas, whovever.
If you don't see Dikembe's superiority to Davis or Powe
you may have been watching NBA games the past 20 years,
with eyes open, but you couldn't see.

This is not an either/or situation (i.e. Mutumbo or someone than can score).
We need both and then some. We could use an upgrade over anyone that is currently coming off the bench.
P.S. Second unit offense would be as much of a problem if Doc would adjust the rotation to have 2 of the Big 3 on the court at all times.

Re: Mutombo will not help us win a ring
Powe and Davis had 5 points and 7 rebounds in 23 minutes.
Deke would not do more than that, because he'll probably only
play about 15 minutes per game.
But he will have a more profound impact on the floor than Davis or Powe,
since Dikembe has 7 1/4 inches in height on Powe and 6 inches on Davis,
plus longer reach and better vertical.

Was I comparing Mutombo to Davis or Powe? Mutombo would be an upgrade over both of them, no question. But what I'm talking about is team needs. This tem lacks offense in half court style playoff games. I would take Joe Smith or P.J. Brown over Mutombo because of that reason. Read what I said. I'm comparing Smith or Brown to Mutombo offensively, not Davis or Powe to Mutombo.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to add Mutombo, but we would need another scorer off the bench.

Re: Mutombo Alone will not help us win a ring
Our bench is in big trouble the last few games because the opposition are not playing a standard rotation, and are having some of their starters run amok against our bench particularly in the first rotation.
The thing that Deke would do, is give us continuity for inside and help defense that Perk provides. This would permit Doc to maybe play KG more (does he play any now?) minutes with the bench (Powe or Davis playing some minutes with the starters at the 4 to compensate), and might let Deke play some minutes with the starters and have Perk help the bench a bit more.
Right now, KG can't play with the bench, because with Powe and Davis both being under-sized, it would push him to the 5. But if Deke is backup Center and KG is playing with him, I don't think it would take KG off his game at all.
Also, having Davis or Powe play the 5 with the starters would cause disruption, they're just not starting 5 material and we'd have a massive mis-match every possession. Help defense would be necessary every possession, leaving an opposition starter open for the shot. But put Deke in there and the remaining starters play their normal game.
Added bench scoring by bringing in a player would be great, but this other alternative I'm proposing becomes available with Deke would allow for increased use of KG and Perk with the bench. And given that Paul and Ray get some minutes with the bench as well, I think it would end up generating overall some more offense from the bench, even though Deke isn't a big offensive player by himself.

Yes, but we don't have the pieces to get him. Maybe as some teams start to look toward the lotto we will be able to pluck a vet. Right now, it's too early.

The C's don't need offense from the 5 and they cannot find offensive weapon there anyway. They need a better backup at the three. Bill Walker or JR Giddens could be the answer there, but i am not sure either has enough of jumpshot to provide the offense needed.

Re: Mutombo Alone will not help us win a ring
I'm a little confused by this thread. Are we arguing or just phrasing things different? Mutombo would be great for us because he would get rid of that 10 minutes a game where Powe and Davis are in there together and we lose ground. He will not fix all our problems but getting him is a no brainer.
