Calf injury benches Bears safety Brown for remainder of season
Associated Press

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears placed safety Mike Brown on injured reserve because of a calf injury on Friday, leaving the defense without one of its emotional leaders heading into a game at Houston that could decide whether they make the playoffs.

It's the fourth trip in five years to injured reserve for Brown, who left the game against Green Bay on Monday night. Losing him is a big blow to the Bears (9-6), who need to win or tie the Texans to have a shot at the NFC North title or a wild-card spot.

If they beat Houston, they would need Minnesota to lose to or tie the New York Giants to win the division, since the Vikings (9-6) hold the tiebreaker. And to get the wild card, they would need losses or ties by Dallas and Tampa Bay.

If the Bears tie Houston, they could still win the division if Minnesota loses, or capture the wild card if Dallas and Tampa Bay go down.

The oft-injured Brown started 15 games this season and had 101 tackles, two interceptions, two tackles for losses and one sack before his latest season-ending injury. He ruptured the anterior-cruciate ligament in his left knee in last year's opener, missed the final 10 games in 2006 with a foot injury and suffered a season-ending Achilles' injury early in the 2004 season. Even when he made the Pro Bowl in 2005, Brown missed the final four regular-season games with a calf injury before returning for the playoffs.

With Brown out the Bears brought back safety Cameron Worrell, who spent his first four seasons with them before signing with Miami in 2007. Worrell signed with the New York Jets before this season and was placed on injured reserve on Aug. 30 before reaching an injury settlement three days later.

Looks like it Stelz time!!! Hopefully no more embarrasing missed tackles that lead to touchdowns. Can D. Manning step in at FS??? Nice to have you back Cameron, I always liked you and Todd Johnson.

This is why i regret the Bears giving away Chris Harris. Bears cut that draft pick they received.

SERIOUSLY! This was Angelo's biggest mistake last season, and it finds its way into this season. I love Mike Brown, but it wouldn't be that big of a blow to our Secondary if Chris Harris was still a BEAR. All the pressure is now solely on the shoulders of our LBs and Defensive front four linemen to bust through and make plays this Sunday.

the RMJ is a shaky situation too, that can also go both ways as in good/bad. But i remember the day CH got traded and they did that special on Comcast with the interview. He got a lil teary eyed and then he had to leave the interview quick because his limo was there to get him to the airport.

Dude, I loved CH. He was such a hard hitter and good player. Kevin Payne and him would have been a sexy ass safety duo. But. at last, it's not happening.

The question I have is can Daniel Manning he placed back into a starting safety role or is he going to be stricly our nickel back going forward? I believe he started free safety last year but was very below average in coverage. I guess we have two options between him and Steltz now but with Lovie not naming his replacement I'm wondering what we're going to do.

xD In Madden, I usually have like you know, Ed Reed and Troy Po...whatever, as the Bears safeties but hey, I guess Kevin Payne and Chris Harris are decent.
