What will OKC do with Joe Smith?

Post#1 » by DowJones » Tue Dec 23, 2008 5:38 am

He is a player that Cleveland would love to get, but are you looking to trade him or buy him out? I think he looks like a player that could be bought out as he is a veteran that will be looking to play some important minutes for a contending team.

I really dont see why Cleveland is so high on this guy. If Cleveland would trade for him i'm sure he would be let go easily. With Kristic coming in, our front court rotation will be kinda crowded, we'd probably want a SG or PG in return. But i don't know why you guys would want to trade anyone off your team considering how well the Cavs are playing

Despite reports that the team is looking to deal/let go of him, I think that OKC should keep him around (as long as he's cool with it). He's been a good, consistent player on a team desparate for both. He also seems to be provide some steady consistent leadership in conjunction with Desmond. I really don't see any benefit to OKC by letting him go, unless, like I said, he is not happy or just wants out in general...

Man you Cleveland fans are greedy. Presti already GAVE you, West and Wally Z for practically nothing. West is a starting guard and Wally has struggled recently but has a decent role on your Cavs team.

Jesus is Presti supposed to do Ferry's job for him too? I know Ferry came from San Antonio but you might want to tell him to stop handing out stupid contracts to guys who simply aren't worth the money. Now he is relying on former co-workers to gift him players.

How about Ferry starts to scratch Presti's back instead of Presti scratching Ferry's. After all the Thunder are a league worst and could use some help. Does it look like the Thunder can afford to simply give away players?

How about you throw in a 1st round pick and the rights to Eric Snow's contract and the Thunder will give you Joe Smith and Damien Wilkins.

Because Smith was traded in this years salary cap year 1stJuly to 30thJune I believe he cant be traded to Cleveland .The only way I think they can get him is if he waived and they sign him.So Joe Smith to the Cavs looks very unlikely unless Presti wants to do Smith and the Cavs a favour which I very much doubt.Smith will be very popular coming up to the trade deadline and I believe will be traded but Presti will get something for him dont know what but it will be something. There have already been numerous trade posts involving Smith already with the likes of PORT,ORL,BOST and ATL fans offering their unwanted players and contracts for him but nothing good that improves OKC now or in the future.

Well considering the economy and their budget what Oklahoma City may want to do is something completely different.

- Expect a couple 2nds.
- Try to maximize payroll savings by trading for the bare minimum in returning contracts (75%).
- Ask for cash to be included in any deal to the tune of 2m or so.
- Possibly a project player.

That kind of deal could help the Thunder by opening up playing time as well as saving quite simply cash. 3m in cash is no joke especially lately. If you're able to do that and get a couple of picks, job well done.

I could see any of the major contenders considering such a deal. I know my Lakers would do so:

- Mbenga, Mihm, and Sun Yue(the project), two 2nd round picks, plus a couple million in cash.

I agree somethings better than nothing but I do believe Presti will shop Smith along with Wilcox,Mason,Watson and probably Collison aswell.Overall though I think OKC will be first looking for expirings and a prospect or lotto protected, late 1st/early second .A second from a contender especailly the Lakers,Clev and Boston is virtually worthless as pick will be at best 3 picks before the draft ends. But OKC have some nice bench players that could be the difference in going out in the playoffs and winning it all.

It's actually from Charlotte if I'm not mistaken and the cash probably is enough to even buy a pick.

Damon Jones' expiring for Smith is the buzz on the Bucks board. What do you guys think?

Just really don't see what's in it for the Thunder... they lose a consistent performer and solid locker-room guy for a guy that annoys me and whose best moments were years ago running around with Shaq. Potentially if there's some type of pick or cash included.... but as mentioned, I don't believe the Thunder are even able to trade him back to the Cavs.

Would you guys have any interest in a Luke Walton for Joe Smith trade?

I think Walton is a good enough player... just with all of the decent PFs we have in addition to Green and Durant at the Forward, I don't see much need to take on his long-term contract...

Walton, eh, he's not what thios team needs. Vujacic on the other hand might be useful. he has the character to actually not come to OKC and it would destroy his ego. But he's a great shooter and could be a great 6th man/temp starter or this team.

Would you guys be interested in Channing Frye/Ike Diougu and a 2nd round pick for Joe Smith and Sene?

Frye and Diogu? That's fair, I guess, but I don't see them having a role on this team. The thing about Walton is his contract, correct? There's no way we take on an unwieldy contract at this stage.

I would like to see them go after one of the guys Boston has got in the D-Leauge... you know, what's his face from Kansas St or the other guy from New Mexico. We could plug them in at shooting guard and see what happens, but I don't see how we could make the contracts work. Joe Smith would work very well in Boston's system, though, and I'd like to give either of those guys some run to see what they have.

I like that... I would even be willing to throw a 2nd round pick the other way. Sene doesn't have much to offer to me, and Smith is solid but his skills and experience are wasted on our team which is built for the future. Frye is under-utilized in Portland, and Diogu has some skills under the bucket, despite being a bust for the most part.

How about Utah? They need help in the big man department especially now

So Joe for Korver?

We would get the shooter we need
Utah would get the help they need for the time being

Return to Oklahoma City Thunder
