Posey Questions

Post#1 » by DubaLakers » Sat Dec 27, 2008 7:16 pm

What was the reason he wasn't resigned?

Did the club ever make any sort of statement about him leaving? Like he wanted to get his ,some shi* like that?

Was he an unrestricted FA?

What kind of contract was he offered?

Hoping for a LAL/BOS NBA Finals Rematch.

THX.

It basically came down to him wanting more money and more years than we wanted to do. I think it probably came to a very close decision for Ainge and co but the kicker probably was the notion that with some real minutes open someone would step up. In retrospect I still think we made th e right decision. We don't want to have contracts we are stuck with and the last few years of his probably would have been just that.

I think that Danny and Doc believe they can replace him with someone else. Your guess is as good as mine who they think can do the job. I'd love to have a decent backup small forward that can take Scala's minutes and stop the C's from going so small at times. Hopefully this situation can be corrected before February.

It's miraculous how good the C's record is despite the lack of a backup center and small forward right now. It truly shows how good the starting five has been.

This is an easy question to answer. The Celtics beat Atlanta, Cleveland, Detroit and LA in the playoffs. Any of those teams as well as 26 others could have signed Posey to the 4 year deal New Orleans did that was essentially the mid-level exception. New Orleans rolled the dice and currently have the same 17-9 record that they had last year at this time. If this move doesn't translate into the Hornets passing the Lakers, Utah and San Antonio out West, they will be sucking wind by the 4th year of this contract.
We loved Posey and we gave him a ton of credit for his intangibles....but maybe too much credit...he averaged 7 points a game. Now if you want to criticize the Celtics for not working harder to replace Posey and depending too much on Tony Allen, I',m with you. Matt Barnes is playing for under $1 million, averaging 12 points and 6 rebounds in 29 minutes for Phoenix and is a high energy player. Not as good defensively but better offensively than Posey and BTW is shooting the 3 at 42%. His abilities at a cheap price were apparent when he played with the Warriors.
Brad Stevens on fans who want the Celtics to tank: "I don’t think they’ll like me all that much then."

If I remember correctly the C's were rumored to have offered him the MLE for 2 years, NO offered him for 4. If that is the truth, no regrets, Posey was a great guy and a solid roleplayer, but at some point within those 4 years there'll have to be some changes on this team and having a ball and chain of a contract to an aging bench player will only make it that much more difficult.

Its also worth noting that a large part of what Posey brings NO is championship experience and a vet locker-room presence. We needed that last year more than we need it now.

The problem really dates to summer 2007, when some schoolboy
working for the Celtics was stupid smart,
and instead of signing Posey to a 3 year deal with the MLE (Posey would have taken it),
and using the LLE on Eddie House,
the Celtics split the MLE between Eddie ($1.5 Million) with the rest to Posey.

This move lacked foresight when it happened,
and led to the predicament the Celtics ran into the following summer (2008).

In July, the Celtics offered Posey 2 years at the MLE, without raises,
New Orleans countered with 3 years, with 8% raises,
the Celtics offered 3 years, without raises,
New Orleans countered with 4 years, with 8% raises,
the Celtics may have then offered 8% raises for years 2 and 3,
but since New Orleans offer had a guaranteed 4th year for $7 million,
Posey went with New Orleans.

Why is it all about Posey and PJ Brown.. Where things stand today they would not have made any difference..

Teams like the Lakers and Cavs have actaually gotten better over last season.. Former due to players getting healthy and latter due to some good moved during the off season..
Lakers for one have starters like Odom, Sasha, Farmer and Ariza coming off the bench.. The only counter i see is a big time starter coming off the bench..

Marbury is one guy who can pick up the bench of all the contenders to the next level..

Everyone is going to chase the Marburry lottery once NY waives him..

Regular season record doesn't really mean anything in the context of what you're trying to say.

Fact is, by not re-signing Posey Boston doesn't matchup as well against the Lakers. As proven on Christmas. New Orleans, despite their record, matches up better against SA and the Lakers with a defender like Posey.

But hey, keep if you think penny pinching is the way to repeat then more power to ya. Going to be a rude awakening when you see a HEALTHY Lakers team in the finals and Kobe torches ya because you're forced guard him the Allen/Allen. :D

I agree that the C's need to bring in a backup small forward with height, but to say that the C's wouldn't beat the Lakers in 7 just because of one game is silly. Celtics would still own the Lakers in Boston. Just like in last years playoffs.

KobeFarmarEra and kevin_405, I think you both missed the point of the OP's thread. The topic was dealing more to the financial constraints of why the Celtics and Posey didn't come to an agreement, but your post lends nothing to the conversation at best it's baiting tactics. Bottom line is that Posey wanted to be compensated for a short times work in Boston but at 32 he was a financial risk.

Like celtsxman said, they'll be in serious handcuffs by the 4th year of that deal. We too could have signed him but 4 to 5 years was not an option. He actually wanted 5 from anybody he could get if from but in reality most teams were only offering maybe 2-3 years. New Orleans came the closes with 4.

People can criticize Ainge all they want but the bottom line is this winning teams make winning decisions too, so truth be told it was smart business period.

And to have PZ, PP, RA, KG all about the same age locks us in for too many years with a team that is over the top on late career players. Three years was reasonable, going four years with James may have turned us into the old Heat team of the past couple of years.
