Re: Week 17 NFL Games including GB-DET
I know people are down about the way the Packers season ended, but when you reflect on it, it really is amazing how TT was 100% correct on Favre. i.e. He can't play anymore in cold weather and his play fades terribly in the second half of the season the last four years. So much so you can't rely on him as your starting QB if you want to be a factor in the playoffs. TT FTW/Favre FTL.
.......and how Favre's opinion on TT's personnel decisions were 100% correct. i.e. the guy is in love with his draft picks and refuses to use trades and free agency to help the team. Favre FTW/TT FTL.

Re: Week 17 NFL Games including GB-DET
Well, I doubt Favre could have predicted that we would have lost three defensive starters for the season, and had another one that nearly had to retire due to a spleen injury.
TT was correct on Favre and the Packers had some bad luck with injury and the Packers were not as bad as their record. Lynch was even commenting on that today, "this is not a 6-10 football team".
Packers will be in the playoffs next season.

Please.
How do you think the Browns and Jets, last year's two most active in free agency and trades, feel about their investments?

I'd say the Jets feel ok since they got to 9-7 this year and were playoff contenders up until the last Sunday.
In the case of player procurement methods, if you aren't competent (and the Browns aren't) you'll struggle with the draft, trades and FA. It isn't the vehicle being used (FA, Draft, trade) but the driver of the vehicle. Ron Wolf knows how to drive everything. Daniel Synder doesn't know how to drive.
Where would the Packers have been the last few years without TT's FA acquisitions of Woodson or Pickett?
Where would the super bowl Packers have been without Ron Wolf's FA acquisitions of White, Dotson, Sean Jones or his trades for Favre, Eugene Robinson and Keith Jackson?

Different era and different situations. As is the case with people who use the Pistons as evidence on how to build a contender in the NBA, maybe people should stop using Wolf as an example of how winners are built. That doesn't happen anymore.
As for how the Jets did, they had the easiest schedule in the NFL and lost to a collection of dogs on their way to completely blowing what looked to be a division ripe for the taking.

No, it is not. The MVP of our defense and arguably our biggest playmaker this season was acquired 2.5 years ago....VIA FREE AGENCY.
I'm not sure how you can dismiss outright a player procurement method that has brought the team it's best playmaker on defense. It would be one thing if our cap was all screwed up, but we've had $20 to $30 million of cap room the last two years that has gone by the wayside.
You can't use FA to make up for bad drafting, which some teams try to do but to dismiss the use of it as TT has done the past two years was foolish.

Re: Week 17 NFL Games including GB-DET
Which players would you have signed that we didn't, and what contracts would you have given them?
I agree 100% on the Moss trade, it should have been made without hesitation, but I don't see any good FA impact deals that we passed on that we could have made. I am only for FA when it is big time impact guys, not just for the sake of spending money.

People act like cap money not spent is essentially flushed down a toilet, when in fact it stays safely stashed away somewhere. And for a small market team like GB in these financial times that's a very good thing.

Favre over Rivers is looking even more like an epic joke.

Re: Week 17 NFL Games including GB-DET
pp, if you want to bank on another presumed washed up free agent resurrecting his career here then go ahead and keep believing that it can happen regularly. There's a reason he wasn't sought after and his contract was structured the way it was, and that was so he could be cut after year one without the Packers being responsible for a guy that we would go on to learn played his best days long ago. It didn't turn out that way and I'm glad the Packers signed one of the few big deals that didn't look like crap less than a year later.
Obviously there are free agency success stories but they're very few and far between, which is why I likened this to someone saying that the Pistons model of success is the way to build a team. Obviously you have to use free agency. Tramon Williams, Colin Cole and Atari Bigby were free agents. So were Brandon Chillar, Donald Lee and Ruvell Martin. But those are also guys you can cut at the drop of a hat and owe next to nothing. The teams that have won this decade are the ones that find guys like that on the cheap and build through the draft. What they don't do is sign free agents to big contracts. They're the ones letting those guys walk.

Man, i was so envious watching that Philly defense today
They are very talented, athletic, aggressive, and very well coached, everything the Packers aren't.

Re: Week 17 NFL Games including GB-DET
I am not 100% sure that TT is not operating under a salary cap that has been imposed upon him from the organization that is not the league's cap.......I only base this upon some comments made by Murphy awhile back on 1250AM about the fact if GB spent the $20 million they were under the cap last year they would have made no money last year......just curious is all.

Someone on WTMJ (Laeivee or MIchaels I think) also made that comment, but was more blunt. Pretty much said TT was not allowed to spend the entire cap.
