okc's and memphis are going to save cap space and not take scals... ainge MAY be able to move scals if he takes back someone with a year left on his deal, like tim thomas, that helps save a team money for next year...

In other words, the Celtics send Pruitt (or Giddens) and Scalabrine to the Thunder
The Thunder send Smith to Boston
Boston also sends enough cash for the Thunder to buyout Scal.
Scal waits 30 days, returns to Boston
That's how it's done folks...
This leaves two questions:
(1) How much would it cost to buy out (or waive) Scalabrine?
(2) Is it worth it to the Cs?
Celtics would send no cash. 23 year old Pruitt is the bargain for 35 year old Smith.
The savings over the next 2 years, plus Pruitt's future Restricted Free Agent Status,
outweigh any issues with Scal.

So the Thunder would take on an extra $2M just for the chance to have Gabe? I think you're severely overstating Pruitt's value if that's true.
In the least, the Cs would need to send that $2M. Considering playoff revenues, it would likely be worth it if Ainge thinks Smith's impact would be that substantial.

As I mentioned in the "No Deke, maybe Joe Smith?" thread, I suspect that in addition to waiting on OKC to buy Smith out (which would open the door for the Cavs to compete with the C's for his services) the move that Ainge is waiting on is finding a replacement for Tony on the wing (or really a replacement for Posey, with Walker/Giddens replacing Tony's role from last year) so that the C's can trade TA and Scal (plus some cash to cover the second year of his deal) for Smith.
The Thunder really need a SG, preferably one who defends a little, and can run with Westbrook and Durant. They were reportedly the C's main competition for Tony's services (before he re-signed with Boston, and they gave the offer sheet to CJ Miles) so they clearly think he can help them fill that SG void.

I thought the Hornets were the Cs main competition...
I do agree though... TA has the OSU connection and could thrive in a situation where he gets more burn. It's a difficult call for the Cs though... TA is their only lock down defender on the wing. That's tough to ignore.
Right now, the Cs are an injury away from dropping from contention - what happens if Perk is out for a prolonged time or during the playoffs? I think I echo the sentiments of a number of other posters when I would like to see the Cs bring in a serviceable big (by "big," I mean 6'-10" and up) and a bench scorer.
Forget Mutumbo... I think Ainge needs to take a shot at a big that can defend AND take some offensive pressure off the second unit.
Secretly I dream of prying Rasheed from the Pistons since he's coming here this off-season any way

Sounds like a guy the Celtics could use.
