Why the Celtics Lost to The Blazers 12/30
Starters played 18 minutes more than normal tonight, producing
192 minutes (normal is 174),
77 points (they average 73),
27 rebounds (average 31),
13 assists (average 17),
6 steals
9 Turnovers
7 Fouls
Bench:
48 minutes
9 points on 3-11 FG's, 3-3 FT's
2 Rebounds
1 Assist
1 Steal
1 Block
4 Turnovers
13 FOULS YUK
The bench lost this game.
4 Bench Turnovers and 13 Bench Fouls in 48 minutes of time = 17 Possessions Wasted
But Powe and Davis were not the right guys for Portland,
Scalabrine would probably have fared better.
And with House and Tony Allen both off,
another scorer was needed.
Danny - You knew this last April. You should have fixed this in July.

Re: Why the Celtics Lost to The Blazers 12/30
Not to be rude, but are you going to make this after every other loss this season?
Seems more like a gamethread post then new topic.
Okay that was somewhat rude, so I'll just apologize for this post.

is it just me or did Garnett take like 2 shots in the second half?

That eddie house shot, excuse me, airball, was ridiculous, when you have ray allen on the court.

That is what happens when you play a good team on the road without a bench. We probably have the worst bench in the league right now. And we are getting exposed.

Do we really need 2 threads about the bench playing poorly? When the bench destroyed the Kings, there wasn't a single thread.

Re: Why the Celtics Lost to The Blazers 12/30
Although the bench was horrible I think the most obvious issue was the Celtics got killed on the boards, starters included. Second Rondo only played 34 minutes, if he even plays just 2 more minutes the Celtics win the game. The biggest issue with the second unit is is the offense becomes completely stagnant and unless TA is on no consistent offense is being generated. Generally they fight through it because they hold on the defensive side of the ball but lately have not. All in all though this is much like the first half of last year so I'm not really concerned. I would like to see Doc get a bit more creative at some point though and obviously Ainge needs to get a veteran big and look at Back-up point guard options. Also might make some sense to see what Giddons or Walker could add. This also makes the Marbury senario MUCH more likely given there is no risk.

I agree why would you put the ball in Eddies hand when you have Ray and Paul?
Was that the play Doc drew up and it got broken up or?

Yeah, Aldridge was pretty clutch last night. The last jumper he made was huge. Kudos goes out to the Blazers for hitting their shots and playing a tough game, despite not having their best player.

Re: Why the Celtics Lost to The Blazers 12/30
Forget the horrible House 3 at the end. Here's why we lost the game:
WEAK DEFENSIVE REBOUNDING.
The blazers had a ton of 2nd chance opportunities. Oden, LA and even Batum killed us on the boards. Big Baby was useless and tough Powe was ineffective I'm not sure why Doc only gave him 8 minutes - I'd take my chances with his defense and rebounding over Davis. Regardless, we couldn't contend with the size. It also looks to me like Perk may not be 100% ever since the 1st quarter injury vs. The Lakers - our interior toughness hasn't been the same since.

I don't know, i think doc must have said, shoot the three fast. Because eddie was contested by oden and he took it fading to the left.
as for the poster who said ray didn't make one all night. True, but eddie was ice cold too.

Re: Why the Celtics Lost to The Blazers 12/30
Doc drew up that play but he obviously didn't want Eddie to take the shot if he was contested heavily. After the play you could see Doc mouth something to the effect of "it wasn't there, don't take it [the shot] if it's not there."
I agree with whoever said the rebounding was the major problem. Oden caused a lot of problems in this game on both ends. That and the offense just completely bogged down, too many iso's. Never mind that guys weren't really looking to attack the basket beyond Pierce.
Even if the Blazers didn't have Roy they played with playoff intensity, the building was rocking and they got three Great (with a capital G) performances out of Blake, Aldridge, and Oden. The Blazers are a good team and it was a tough road trip, it would have been crazy if the Celtics had won given how well the Blazers performed, especially in clutch situations.

Couldn't help laughing at how Celtics got caught on the 6 man trick... In the final analysis it could have been the difference..

How about Powe and Davis had to go against two strong 7 footers and couldn't control them or the boards?
NFL fans are now feeling what NBA fans been living for a while...

You can put all the focus you want on your bench, but remember that the Blazers were without Brandon Roy, a player that has been carrying us many times this season. Portland without Roy is like Boston without Pierce and Allen.
You guys just had an off night.
